The spider as a spirit animal offers many interpretations. Its symbolism has both a dark and a light side, reflecting its connection with life’s many facets.
Spider spirit animal: Symbol of creativity
In many cultures, the spider is given credit for its ability to weave intricate webs that are a miracle of organic engineering. If you have the spider as an animal spirit guide, you may have an affinity with acts of creation and the ability to create delicate, intricate things or ideas that are also strong.
As the weaver of the web, the spider symbolizes the spirit of creation. In several traditions, she’s the totemic symbol of the Mother, strong feminine energy. In Ancient Egypt, the spider was used as a symbol to represent the goddess of the Divine Mother, Neith. In some American Indian tribes, it is considered as the symbol for the creator of the world and by extension is associated with the female creative energy.

Patience: The wisdom of the spider totem
Like the spider waiting her prey patiently, the presence of this spirit animal in your life could point to the need to show patience regarding a project or some ideas that you are trying to realize. Giving some time while paying attention to how events are unfolding and acting when the opportunity truly arise might be a lesson of wisdom from the spider spirit animal.
Symbolism of the spider: Life spirit and weaver of destiny
Just like the spider weaves her beautifully engineered web, this spirit animal fosters the integration of all parts and aspects of your life into a whole. When the spider shows up in your life, this spirit animal could guide you to integrate some piece of your personal “puzzle” and gain a more coherent perspective on your life.
The spider is a spirit animal whose purpose is to inspire you to gain perspective on an issue or project you contemplate taking on. Feel free to explore the many facets of the problem you are facing in order to find the appropriate solution. The power of this animal encourages you to count on your ability to view things from multiple angles and weave mental and intuitive flexibility into your daily thinking.
Spider spirit animals and your shadow self
If the spider shows up in your life, this spirit animal may remind you of negative aspects of your personality or your life that need to come to the light more fully. For many, spiders inspire fear or at least some form of aversion. As such, they tend to be associated with what psychologists would call “the shadow self”. In brief, your “shadow” or “shadow self” are aspects of your personality or your life that you or other people deem unworthy or not likable and are therefore rejected or repressed.
The spider as a spirit animal does not typically take on these negative attributes. Nevertheless, its presence in your life might bring up negative feelings or unease. Whenever you feel your relationship with your power animal is characterized by tension, discomfort or fear, you can ask yourself where these feelings also appear in your life. Look for any association with your personal feelings, even if it indirectly leads you to other areas of your life, such as work, family, or a relationship for instance.
Here’s another question to ask to interpret the meaning of the spider spirit animal and the guidance it offers: What kind of relationship or connection did you or did you want to establish with this animal? Was the spider threatening or harmful? Did you kill or harm it? The answer will indicate the kind of dynamic that is shaping up between you and what the spider represents.
Dreams: How to interpret spiders and spider spirit guides in dreams
The symbolism of the spider in dreams is generally associated with the archetype of the feminine. If the spider appears in your dreams as a spirit animal guide or as your totem, pay attention to the messages it’s offering to you: They are likely related to an important direction you’re taking in your life.
When you dream of spiders, chances are that it refers feminine energy in your life. This dream symbol could represents a woman you know or your own connection with qualities usually considered as feminine, such as receptivity, patience, creativity.
An important element to consider when you interpret the meaning of the encounter with the spider in your dream is the reaction and feelings you experienced at that time: Were you afraid? Or rather intrigued or fascinated? Was the overall atmosphere of the dream scary and stressful or enchanting, adventurous?
If you want to kill it, you might be repressing some feelings or trying to remove tension from your life. If it looks harmful or it is threatening to you, you may feel that some aspects of your personality or your life are not aligned with your highest interest or that you or your people around you are rejecting them. The spider in a negative dream could symbolize your fears or an adverse influence in your life.

Hi – wondering if anyone can help with this spider symbolism. I work as a healer and often get images in my mind when working with people. Today whilst working I had a strong spiritual vision of a very large spider up in the corner of my room. Never had this vision before. I’m not scared of spiders and have no personal negative feelings towards them however I felt straight away that this spider vision meant harm. My patient then proceeded to tell me that a friend had tried muscling in on a new relationship that she was just starting with a man she had recently started to get closer to. Perhaps this “friend” is the spider, waiting to pounce and take the happiness from this new relationship. I’m now cleansing my room and myself and sending this vision away. I don’t usually pick up visions of animals – in fact this is the first time, it’s usually objects or people. Anyone else get visions like this? L&L X
Ok, I have a question and I don’t know where else to turn. Maybe someone here can help me. I was sleeping on the sofa one night. I woke up, wide awake, and opened my eyes. When I looked at my fireplace, there was a spider shadow about 7 inches tall walking across the mantel. It stopped, then after a moment it faded away slowly. I wasn’t afraid. And yes, I was wide awake because I didn’t go back to sleep afterwards. I laid there thinking about it and what it could mean. Can someone please explain that to me? It was fascinating and has me thinking and wondering what it meant or was. I’m not afraid of spiders even though I don’t want them crawling on me. As far as I could tell, it looked like a Daddy longlegs. It was mostly legs with a very small body.
Funny you talk about that and few days ago I was woken up, I looked around the closed my eyes to go back to sleep, you know how sometimes when you close your eyes you get a kind of strobing light, well I do anyway sometimes but instead of lights it was webs then I could see spiders on the web. When I opened my eye I saw a shadow of and big spider on my wall and it was moving it took up the whole wall I was a little scared but wondering and interested more then anything else, I turned my light on and it was gone. Its just random that today I was wanting to look for answers and can across you comment and not only that but I have been Astro flying for the past week as well. Mine was a Red back but when you mention Daddy long legs I feel it was more that then Red Back I only thought Red Back because I’ve just moved to Australia.
Okay, I had a similar experience only a few nights ago, and I came across this page because I’ve also been having dreams of spiders, which I usually don’t. Strangely, I had a spider dream and woke up with bug bites on my side. The next night, I woke up and was convinced I saw a very large spider crawling up over the side of my bed, right towards my face. I wasn’t asleep when I saw it, as I had woken up very suddenly, and even though it was not real and disappeared after only a few moments, I was convinced it was there and too shaken to go back to sleep. I was so terrified I slept on the couch. Does anyone have any ideas what these experiences/dreams mean, in particular this strange spider vision? Strange that other people have had it, and in such close succession. :)
I forgot to mention that the spider was our son in my dream!
In my dream my husband and I were sitting under a tree and there was a spider that we were really focused on- then it started running away and we tried to find it and bring it back but it was so small we lost it in all the leaves of the woods!
Any interpretations?
I have a spider outside my window right in front of the window making a web for the past 4 days what does this mean its small and brown
I am beside myself. I have always had spiders around. They seem to hang out in my bathroom – watch me shower….sit beside me in the bathtub. Seem upset if I take a bath at an odd time of day etc. One was getting a little nervy and today I MURDERED HIM. I feel horrible about it now. One of my friends says THEY BITE and are poisenous but in all my years of having spiders about one has never come close to biting me. Rest in peace little fella – I will miss you next time I take a bath!
I’m so afraid of spiders but more and more often I find them crawling on me(I do apologies I can’t see what I’m writing there is a black band across the box) anyways I’d really like to know why it doesn’t seen to matter where I am in my house these little spiders will find me and crawl on me!!
Spiders are very special to me.
I have never been afraid of them. They show up often.
Many years ago I was bitten on my tongue by a spider that was in a glass of water that I took a drink from in the middle of the night.
Another time, a small spider hopped up on to my computer and jumped around a bit and seemed to try to stare me down.
Do you have any thing you would like to add to my interactions with this little creatures?
Thank you
I have dreamed of a huge and unusual spider with designs on it. I wasn’t afraid but instead I was so very curious and fascinated and while i was looking in to it it suddenly changed into some kind of a beautiful artwork. It touched me and I was surprised. What does it mean?
I had a dream of having multiple spiders on my right forearm. they didn’t seem to be biting me but staining my skin with different colors like green and purple. The surroundings where like I was in an enchanted forest. I have a high fear of spiders but I was more fascinated with what they were trying to do in this dream

I was bitten by a spider, we believe, on my third eye. I’m looking for references to being bitten in this location? I am working on many community projects and moving into the Seminary. This is important for me to understand although I know the answers will show up when it’s time.
Perhaps it’s trying to open up your higher consciousness, third eye, for you to gain creative abilities not from yourself, but the cosmos?
Spiders are Athena’s symbolic animal. They represent the wisdom in life choices and taking careful steps in each decision made. Killing a spider and even worst, a pregnant spider, will bring misfortune and that is a certain thing..Spiders weave their webs to trap and wait patiently and so a web indicates the personal power to conquer ambitions or win over other people’s motives against you or towards you-negative or positive. Dreaming of a spider having caught you or someone else (or something else) in its web means you need to fight to free yourself from whatever is hoding you captive. Spiders also mean creativity and luck-so killing one in real life is like killing your luck..
