- Patience
- Receptivity
- Feminine energy
- Creativity
- Weaver of life’s fate
- Shadow self, dark aspects of life or personality
The spider as a spirit animal offers many interpretations. Its symbolism has both a dark and a light side, reflecting its connection with life’s many facets.
Spider spirit animal: Symbol of creativity
In many cultures, the spider is given credit for its ability to weave intricate webs that are a miracle of organic engineering. If you have the spider as an animal spirit guide, you may have an affinity with acts of creation and the ability to create delicate, intricate things or ideas that are also strong.
As the weaver of the web, the spider symbolizes the spirit of creation. In several traditions, she’s the totemic symbol of the Mother, strong feminine energy. In Ancient Egypt, the spider was used as a symbol to represent the goddess of the Divine Mother, Neith. In some American Indian tribes, it is considered as the symbol for the creator of the world and by extension is associated with the female creative energy.

Patience: The wisdom of the spider totem
Like the spider waiting her prey patiently, the presence of this spirit animal in your life could point to the need to show patience regarding a project or some ideas that you are trying to realize. Giving some time while paying attention to how events are unfolding and acting when the opportunity truly arise might be a lesson of wisdom from the spider spirit animal.
Symbolism of the spider: Life spirit and weaver of destiny
Just like the spider weaves her beautifully engineered web, this spirit animal fosters the integration of all parts and aspects of your life into a whole. When the spider shows up in your life, this spirit animal could guide you to integrate some piece of your personal “puzzle” and gain a more coherent perspective on your life.
The spider is a spirit animal whose purpose is to inspire you to gain perspective on an issue or project you contemplate taking on. Feel free to explore the many facets of the problem you are facing in order to find the appropriate solution. The power of this animal encourages you to count on your ability to view things from multiple angles and weave mental and intuitive flexibility into your daily thinking.
Spider spirit animals and your shadow self
If the spider shows up in your life, this spirit animal may remind you of negative aspects of your personality or your life that need to come to the light more fully. For many, spiders inspire fear or at least some form of aversion. As such, they tend to be associated with what psychologists would call “the shadow self”. In brief, your “shadow” or “shadow self” are aspects of your personality or your life that you or other people deem unworthy or not likable and are therefore rejected or repressed.
The spider as a spirit animal does not typically take on these negative attributes. Nevertheless, its presence in your life might bring up negative feelings or unease. Whenever you feel your relationship with your power animal is characterized by tension, discomfort or fear, you can ask yourself where these feelings also appear in your life. Look for any association with your personal feelings, even if it indirectly leads you to other areas of your life, such as work, family, or a relationship for instance.
Here’s another question to ask to interpret the meaning of the spider spirit animal and the guidance it offers: What kind of relationship or connection did you or did you want to establish with this animal? Was the spider threatening or harmful? Did you kill or harm it? The answer will indicate the kind of dynamic that is shaping up between you and what the spider represents.
Dreams: How to interpret spiders and spider spirit guides in dreams
The symbolism of the spider in dreams is generally associated with the archetype of the feminine. If the spider appears in your dreams as a spirit animal guide or as your totem, pay attention to the messages it’s offering to you: They are likely related to an important direction you’re taking in your life.
When you dream of spiders, chances are that it refers feminine energy in your life. This dream symbol could represents a woman you know or your own connection with qualities usually considered as feminine, such as receptivity, patience, creativity.
An important element to consider when you interpret the meaning of the encounter with the spider in your dream is the reaction and feelings you experienced at that time: Were you afraid? Or rather intrigued or fascinated? Was the overall atmosphere of the dream scary and stressful or enchanting, adventurous?
If you want to kill it, you might be repressing some feelings or trying to remove tension from your life. If it looks harmful or it is threatening to you, you may feel that some aspects of your personality or your life are not aligned with your highest interest or that you or your people around you are rejecting them. The spider in a negative dream could symbolize your fears or an adverse influence in your life.

I came here because I am interested in Shamanism and while trying to lay down and relax for bed … I thought I felt/saw in my mind a huge spider crawling up and near my Vagina. I jumped.
Come to find out it represents the divine feminine! YES. All is connected. Confirmation.
Also.. maybe I am scared of my true power and potential as a woman.. and also maybe I use sex in not so healthy ways… by threatening to take it away if my lover is annoying me or misbehaving. Since, I felt threatened by the vision.
Thank you.
Had a vision of a spider when I layed down to bed to fall asleep. It was a good 3 ft long and it was on its web not jumping but bouncing up and down on its web very vigorously. My feeling of it was one of curiosity and slight bewilderment.
The same thing happened to me just now. I laid down, closed my eyes and saw a small spider in a web outside a window. So weird. I never had this happen before.

Lately I have had a couple of dreams that stuck with me about spiders. In one of them I sought shelter in a small gardening store from a very intense thunderstorm. I am waiting out the storm and I see a really large spider on the floor a few feet away from me. I try to sort of shoo it away, but it doesn’t move. It isn’t scared of me, and I’m not scared of it. It’s more like it’s waiting for me to do something.
I had another dream where I walked into a spiderweb accidentally, and the spider is again very large and near its web. I’m not scared of it, again, and it is observing me.
I have been encountering spiders all the time. They seem to follow me. especially huntsman spiders. I moved rooms and they still followed me. I now am very afraid of spiders as I am always encountering them.
I had a dream the other night and it was quite negative and scary I was trapped and I couldn’t move in any direction cause they were spider webs with spiders in them in every direction I turned it was horrifying. Is there any meaning behind being followed by spiders, im really curious as to what makes them attracted to me!
Since I have a similar situation – not being afraid of spiders in my life, but fearing them I my dreams – I was looking for an answer, too.
I was told that the spiders in my dreams represent my creativity that I either forcefully shut off or that I see very negative. Since I would not accept it as part of my personality – hence my life – and therefore don’t live this part of mine it creates “negative obstructions” in my soul. My creativity wants to be used, but I fear using it.
There are a lot of reason why one could fear the own “artist within”. Some gave it up because they wanted to settle on a “save job” / “Save business”. Some gave it up because out of frustration. Some had to give it up because e.g. they were good painters or musicians and after an incident (sickness, accident) they had to stop because they could not use their hands like they were used to anymore. Thus what they once could do easily turned out as “not as good as before” anymore – that can create frustration, even sadness. Or maybe your hands/fingers just hurt too much after a small session…
I don’t know whether that’s remotely helpful or not.
But I noticed that my spider-dreams faded from “very often” to “quite rarely” after I started to “inspire” young artists. I was very protective of my own ideas when I still was able to make them come true, but now I share them more freely, and it makes me happy to see that I can help young artists/crafters when they e.g. had an artist-block or don’t know which project to start next.
I found a black widow just now. in my bathroom, blacklight next to it.
I’ve been encountering spiders a lot lately. Recently I was walking to class, and I passed under a tree. I ended up with a huge yellow spider dangling from a line on my glasses; I ended up freaking out, of course, and killed it. I’ve also had dreams of spiders raining from the ceiling of an abandoned warehouse. The place was coated in huge, hairy spiders and I was scared to death. There were people melting into the floors too, like ice onto a table. And arms reaching out from the walls… Running out of that place was a pain, haha.
Last night I had a dream about having a big black taranchula as a pet. In the dream I cared for him, named him Sydney, stroked him, held him and let him roam freely through the house. I knew that he could be a danger to my little girl while she was sleeping so I was considering getting him a tank. In my dream my husband found another spider that wasn’t a taranchula but still it was a big spider, I didn’t like this other spider and I knew if the two met they would fight some how I helped Sydney attack and eat the other spider !!! When I woke up I had this feeling that I would possibly consider getting a pet spider and when I googled taranchula my stomach turned and I was reminded of how absolutely terrified of them I am !!!! This dream is really bothering me as I really am so scared of them and have a real phobia but yet in my dream I was playing with this spider for ages! Any advise would be most apprisiated.
Many thanks
In reality I am not afraid of spiders. I live in a country where there are no “dangerous” spiders anyway, and in fact I enjoy having a spider in my room especially during summer because it keeps the mosquitos away from me. I like seeing the wasp spiders coming out in late summer, sometimes I even touch them, and I use to call them “auntie” or “Granny”. When I have to catch a spider to take it out or to rescue it from drowing I catch them with my bare hands and put them on a safe spot.
So it’s very strange that whenever I dream of spiders I feel disgusted and afraid of them. I usually lay on my back, and it’s like in the “Lullaby”-video (from the band “The cure”); a spider is weaving me in or I watch a spider weaving, and I want to run away and can’t. All my feelings towards this spider(s) are negative – disgust, fear, hate… and when I wake up I still feel a “knot” in my chest that is there for hours.
Since I like spiders – I am very confused about those dreams. What could they mean?
I am not dreaming spiders but see them everywhere and today I had one appear on my right hand whilst I was driving. A little fluorescent green one. Very cute. This green spider appeared to me about 2 years ago in my car whilst waiting at a train stop. It was on the dashboard then dropped a line and landed onto the bottom of the dashboard. It just sat looking at me and I at it for some time, while a freight train passed. I took a photo and eventually it moved on. I felt intrigued and delighted to see it. Today, I was driving down a quiet street thinking about the New Year and whether it would be a good one and fell into some negative thinking. I thought to myself no, be positive it’ll be great. The I felt a tickle on my right hand and there was the same green spider but smaller. I pulled over and sat by the side of the road just letting the spider crawl over my hand and gently moved it over to my left hand. All the time watching and enjoying the play from my little visitor. I was even able to take a photo with my phone whilst it still crawled on my hand. I eventually rested my hand down to let it go if it wanted. it stayed for a moment and then disappeared. Funny because last week I thought to myself I hadn’t had a “spider visit” in some time and here it was! Plus for the last week I’ve seen so many spiders big and small in my house and in the garden and didn’t think too much about it. My 4yr old daughter loves spiders and too sees the everywhere and she even pointed them out to me to take a photo on Christmas day at my sister’s house. Again, I didn’t read much into it. I’m a very artistic and creative woman and have been working hard to get a fashion business off the ground with my sister. All is going well but slow due to lack of funds. So we keep moving little steps at a time. All today I kept asking what is it that the universe is saying to me? Be more creative with my hands? Be confident I can create a new reality for the year? I’ve tried to find out what this may mean but can only find references to dreams not reality. Would love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks,
Rosemary
Hi, I had a really bad dream of spiders. In real life I do fear them too.
I dreamt that I was somewhat lying down somewhere. Not in a very comfortable position I think. My right shoulder caught some of the spider “strings” it’s not a Web. It’s more like they were moving from a place on my right, to an open window out on my left. One by one crawling out. They looked weird. Really long skinny legged and had really small n multiple bumps on their backs. Colourful ones. But with those legs. It expands out really huge. I was so afraid they would crawl on me.
After which I was at another scene. Now on the bed. Seems like on a holiday with my relatives. I see my uncle resting too. And I was warning him abt a white & tint of red spider. Long skinny legged too, on his back crawling. But there was already another one dead on the sheets. He was sweeping it n it came towards me. But I was really trying so hard to kill it with the pillow in my hand.
After which I felt a sweet n warm sting. N found out I was bitten badly on the bottom left side of my chin. I checked at the mirror. Black, puffy bruises, that looked like really bad boils. Had flesh that opens n looks like it could fall off anytime! And I was really lost didn’t know what to do. Didn’t know what bit me but I supposed it was a spider.
All the spiders were long n skinny legged.
Please kindly help. Thank you.
In my dream I suddenly noticed – the big Tarantula i had buried away in the bottom of the flowerpot of my livingroom-tree was starting to ascend from the soil. Like it was pushed up of the soil itself.
It was big, the size of a child’s head. I knew it to be dead, remembering the immense struggle I had to get it killed some time ago.
Had I not succeeded thoroughly in killing it after all?
I was afraid to check if it had come alive again, feeling it would be immensely creepy. Like a zombie-tarantula, even more scary than a regular one.
As I looked, it was kind of slowly rising through the thick layer of soil. I could see the contours of its body – still laying still and supposedly dead under the soil, but the soil fell of the sides of it and it had hundreds of brown-orange glass eyes perfectly lined around its body.
The daylight shone through and illuminated the eyes from behind when I looked at it. The eyes seemed to stare at me when I moved, even though the tarantula were lying there perfectly still with a thick layer of gray soil still on it.
I was trying to keep calm from the ricing fear and gross inside me. I stared fascinated at it several steps away, scared to go near if it showed up to be alive after all, after all this time.
Standing there like frozen and with my eyes fixed at it, a pencil-like, glass tube was rising up through the soil from its back. And slowly, slowly seeping out snow-white, cotton-like balls in a lemon-juice-colored jelly. It went so slow I wasn’t sure they were moving at all.
But I knew what those were. Eggs. And they were big. Like a quarter of a thumb.
I now had more serious issues to deal with than to care about if the creature were alive or still dead. Could these eggs be alive if the tarantula were dead?
I thought it important to find out before they could possibly hatch and uncontrollably fill and hide in my apartment. I was now afraid the situation would unfold itself into a catastrophic, disastrous infection of my apartment.
They seeped out so slowly I didn’t know if the bead of eggs were moving at all. Hanging from the tube in dangling slime I slowly realized it is moving and coming dangerously near the floor. Layer upon layer of thoughts crashed in my mind. Transfixed by my still un-named fear it made me unable to think rationally or take any action. I just kept staring at the situation that painfully slow happened before my eyes.
I searched around inside my mind to try to get some information wether dead tarantulas can release live babies or not, I saw hundreds of huge live and dying tarantulas letting go of slimy beads of small cotton-like pearls, each little ball containing thousands of little spiders.
I was trying to process the implication of what I saw when right before my eyes a tiny, wormlike thing that actually looked like a wiggling sperm let go of one of the jelly-covered cotton-balls.
It fell slowly and curling beautifully towards the rug on the floor, floating down like in water.
It immersed through the fibers of my rug and I knew it was too late to catch it, stop it from hiding and hatching in my apartment.
I knew then that I had to address the whole beed of slimy eggs soon to be hatched.
And it was that – were the mother tarantula really alive and watching my moves?
Then I woke up annoyed and realizing that I have fear which is not dealt properly with – and is therefore to spawn – but with no clue of what the fear is about.
Anyone?
Just some thoughts popping out of the blue:
Fear of the spider represents fearing hidden aspects of life, fear of life itself.
The spider is also symbol of life-force, which is creative in itself.
So fear of spiders also represents the fear of LIVING life fully, with all your bits and pieces represented in life. Scary!
It also means fear of standing in your own sovereign solitude. All by yourself. No matter the costs. And not killing it (here: conquer the fear of it, being free in a situation) will spawn into numerous smaller fears that will grow in time if not dealt with.
So the advice here is: Relax! And keep your wits and eyes open. Be in balance. Relax and receive with trust and peace what life presents to you.
