Owl spirit animals as messengers of change
Owl spirit animals are symbolic of death in many traditions. In most cases however, it should not be taken literally: If the owl is associated with death, it can be viewed a symbolic death, meaning a transition in life, important changes that are taking place or about to happen.
When the owl shows up in your life, pay attention to the winds of change. Perhaps you are about to leave some old habits, a situation that no longer serve you or bring something new in your life.
Dream interpretation of the owl
When you dream about an owl, your spirit animal may be contacting you to warn you about a danger or threat that you need to pay attention to. It can bring a wise insight into important matters that you should not ignore.
When an owl appears in a dream, it could also mean that the intuitive part of you is calling for attention: Pay attention and listen to the subtle signs in your life, to what is important, but not necessarily obviously so.
The owl could also be an animal spirit guide offering you insight into a moment of transition. Since this totem animal is often associated with death, when an owl shows up in a dream, it could mean that you are receiving guidance regarding personal transformation and change.
In many dream interpretations, the owl can represent a deceased friend or family member who comes back in the dream in the shape of a spirit animal.

Birds, especially birds of the night, are often associated with departed souls. The owl is no exception. In some popular beliefs, they are considered a bad omen signifying the imminent death of a close relative or someone important. Romans even believed that an owl hooting from the top of a public building announces the death of an important public figure. It could also represent the spirit of a deceased family of a close friend.
The night owl was the animal associated with the Lord of Death in the Aztec tradition. There’s a similar meaning for the Celts who associated the owl’s spirit with an animal announcing death, especially if it flies into someone’s window while a sick person is inside the house. It was viewed as the spirit animal that would carry the souls of the departed to the underworld.
Other traditional meanings for the owl spirit animal
In Indian American traditions, the owl is called the Night Eagle. The owl totem has a special connection with the night and the moon, while the eagle is connected to the sun.

I just remembered a dream i had about an owl and i feel some connection towards them. I guess i am an observant person and i can see the truth even when its hidden. Although i feel like i am guarded by the light
it’s weird… first, i took the spirit animal quiz on playbuzz and the result said i’m deer-spirited – the result also brought me here… and when i tried the quiz of this version, i got owl spirit. i’m kinda confused but they both got some resemblances – and had ‘intuition’ as the biggest and most centered thing in the description. this just makes me claimed myself as a high intuitive person yess

I would love for someone to help me understand… My hubby was diagnosed with cancer in 2013. Just after a male and female were seen around our house in the area we live. They eventually had 2 babies. Then they disappeared. I have been looking for them ever since. Last night they showed up again. The weird thing is we thought the cancer was gone but it had spread elsewhere and the surgery is this morning. Does it mean anything. I do have tremendous faith in God that all will go well. Just wondering about the owls.
Thank You
Hi Lee, The owl is there to show you what you are not seeing or choosing to ignore, consciously or unconsciously. Cancer is not a cause of problems it is a symptom of a problem. Your husband is carrying beliefs that do not serve him and just like a circuit that is shorting out, his belief is creating heat in his body that is so out of control that the cancer is resulting. This is why the cancer, and the Owls, came back. You should consider these omens as the power they are. You are literally being shouted at by spirit to ‘wake up!’, before it’s too late because it is important to spirit that you do so. You need to get to a shaman, a good one, or a proper medium, trust me there is one waiting to hear from you, so you can discover the answers that are trying so hard to be heard. Phil
I have always been connected to owls for as long as I can remember. My grandpa always collected them when I was little and I remember falling in love with every one I saw. In my personal opinion owls bring happiness and opens doors to new ways of living. I am proud to say that owls will forever be a part of my life and soul, and will always be there when I need any kind of guidance throughout time. Connect with your spirit animal and things will make a bit more since.
I feel like i knew this allready i do like owls
York Dance?
I’ve always felt like I was connected to owls in some way or another I’ve always been fascinated by them but i haven’t had experienced like most I’ve read on here. I’ve actually saved two owls on two diffrent occasions, both were found about two years apart near the same location near where I grewup. They both were young still very small but I kept them at my house and tended to them until they were strong again then I was told I’d have to give them to the game warden so they could be realeased into the wild. I was young only 16 when I found the first and 18 when I found the second but I frequently dream about owls and just last night I listened to one hoot it was perched up in a tree outside my window. Iam of Cherokee decent and most people with my ancestry get really nervous when they see or hear an owl like its a bad omen, but I never have thought an owl as a bad omen I’ve always consider it a good one instead of getting scared I just laid and listened till I fell asleep was actually the best night of sleep I’ve received in along time. I enjoy hearing everyone’s stories though Thank you all for sharing.
Owls have been in my dreams all my life
One used to perch on my green swing as a child when I used to suffer fromm incredibly frightening nightmares ,,the owl was there always as if to protect me
Yesterday when my beautiful cat passed away I dream of. an owl and woke up to hooting , I truly believe owls are protecting creatures
Thank you

I am taking an art class and we create art based on a theme in our lives. For some reason, I was inspired to use white sand dough to make an owl holding onto an anchor in the ocean or sea near a cliff. I have never made owls into art before, nor anchors. An aboriginal woman in my class told me that there is a native story about the Owl and the Anchor, but I cannot seem to find it anywhere. Does anyone know this story and can tell me it
I’ll share my jourey with you, but it is my story and one, in whole or part, that can’t be included in any publication or in any other way of distribution. That means that it’s now in copyright. I hope you will respect that and will wait for my book (everyone writes a book!!) I’ve been told to write a book on my whole experience, which I’ve started. A White Owl saved my life. Those of us who have the white owl as a totem (which, at the time I saw it, I didn’t know it was going to be or already was mine) are supposed to be more intuitive. I am about other people, but as far as me, what was happening was way ‘below my radar’. I was having internal physical problems, so the doctors piece-mealed out my treatment–stomach problems? Take this. Breathing problems? Do this, etc. I was feeling drained of energy and just not feeling right, but couldn’t identify what it might be. One night, a white owl came to me in a very vivid dream. There were people I didn’t know in our driveway by the RV and I was on the sidewalk. I looked up into the beautiful, clear blue sky and a white owl was circling. It saw me and flew down at me. Even thought the other people couldn’t see it because of where they were standing, we all ducked and it flew over my head. It flew back up into the sky, circled around again, became a little larger and flew back down at me. Again, we ducked. Each time it flew up, it became larger and when it came down, it’s brilliant blue eyes stared into mine as it flew over. The last time, I knew that it didn’t mean any harm to me so I didn’t duck, but the intensity with which it looked into my eyes, I realized that it was trying to give me a message. But, what was it? I knew nothing of white owl dreams and had never even seen one. I didn’t forget the dream, but it nagged me, so I looked it up on the net. What I read, I didn’t like: death–or death of a way, a change. Wow! How true that ended up being. Several weeks later, I went to the Midwest for a visit and on my way back, I found myself sitting alone in an empty waiting room way out in the boondocks of the airport terminal. In walked a young man and I had to remind myself to not judge a book by it’s cover; but please, the room is empty, don’t sit by me. I felt uneasy. As it was, he sat three seats from me. I don’t know what made me start to talk to him, but there was a strong need to do that. I found an incredibly interesting person who became a teacher to me in the time we were waiting for the airplane. He confirmed what I had read and by the things I had told him, he said that it didn’t necessary mean death, but a change in my life because of the terrible situation that had happened with our house. My health declined to where I was choking often, passing out and sleeping almost around the clock. I finally managed to get the doctors to take me seriously. They found something totally unexpected–a very rare cancer of the sternum that was killing me. It took another two months before I could finally have the surgery to remove it ALL–a 5.5 LB tumor that had invaded my sternum, parts of ribs and parts of my collar bones. A type of acrylic sternum was built in sections in my chest. I was in ICU for two weeks, another two weeks at the hospital trying to relearn to swallow, etc. Then, I was a month in physical rehab. A year later, when I was back in the hospital for a much smaller problem, I told my story to my respiratory therapist, who was 1/8th Cherokee. She told me that it was rare that a white owl visited anyone, but when it did, it was carrying a message. Three years later, I’m still grateful that the white owl decided to visit me and that the young man sat as close to me as he did. Was he sent there at that time to give me the information he shared with me? It feels that way. The white owl is definitely my totem and I found a wonderful carved bone that some of you may have seen. The white owl has its wings wrapped around the woman as if in protecting her. The owl warned me; my personal faith and prayers of many got me through the surgery and into healing, which three years later is still happening. At times, I do feel like the Bionic Woman and still want to get a shirt with those words on it. In the hospital–I think I felt more like The Borg. Thanks to my white owl, all is good.
Thank you so much for sharing that! Let us know when your book is avaiable. I would love to read it.
I love your story. Please let us know about your book. I too did see a white owl with “blue eyes” in a dream, and today I learned that the owl it’s also my totem.
I am an owl with an unknown purpose
Me too.
Your purpose is not unknown to you, you are simply having to experience it as ‘unknown’ as part of your ‘knowing’. There is nothing that is not for purpose, especially ‘being blind’, literally or metaphorically. You are developing other gifts of understanding and acceptance because it is your rejection that is the veil shielding your sight. You have issues with trust, of others and yourself, because you are not seeing the need for everything but you are in every moment building up the strength to let go of all that has served you by holding you back. When you recognize regret for what it truly is you will see the power of your thought as the destructive force it can be and start to use it as the creative force it has always been.
I was just watching my 1st lunar eclipse from my 2nd floor apartment balcony and I saw a huge white owl fly right by me. I live in Arizona. The only other time I ever saw a white owl was in 2006 when I lived in Kansas where I was going to college. I remember that was the year my grandma, the closest person to me in my life, had been in the hospital and getting better. She was a diabetic going through dialysis. That day in 2006 I was leaving a friends home who lived in the countryside and the road to get back to my dorm was long and dark. No traffic lights there. JUst a long road and lots of bushes and trees on either side of the road. As I was driving slowly this huge white owl with an enormous wing span flew in front of my car and landed on the middle of the road and just peacefully looked at me for what seemed like an eternity. I obviously had to stop my car to not hit it. AT this point I had no idea there was such a thing as white owls. I was a city girl born and raised in Chicago her whole life and this beautiful white owl was almost angelic like. I don’t know why but immediately after it took off into flight with its big gorgeous white wings I saw an image of my grandma and thought inside that she was going to pass soon. I almost felt like that was what the owl came to let me know and to be at peace. SO I prepared my inner self for it and sure enough in a matter of weeks I got the phone call from my mom that something happened with my grandma falling off of the hospital bed and I would have to go there soon. September of 2006 I said goodbye to her as she passed. SHe was a part of me. SO today when I saw this white owl during the lunar eclipse I am wondering what it means. What’s strange is that I live in Arizona and when I searched the interferon white owls back in 2006 after seeing that one I learned they usually live in snowy regions or up north in Canada but not in Kansas or Arizona. SO something is happening. Any thoughts?
Thank you for sharing. Beautiful story.
Yes, thank you for sharing that. It is a wonderful story. My thought is your Grandma came to tell you that she is well and/or she came to tell you to expect change. But I absolutely believe there was a message from her both times.
My first experience with an owl was a little bit odd. Seeing as I live in a heavily suburban area, the only owl-like creature I usually come across are tawny frog-mouths, which aren’t really owls anyway. However, the first time I saw a proper owl was short-lived but one I can still remember vividly.
It was when I was around 12, and my family had recently moved to a new house. Said house had been raised up about five metres in order to make a new floor beneath it, and we had to live with my grandmother about a month prior to us actually being able to live in it.
What’s funny about this was that my favourite movie at the time was Animal Logic’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. I know it was probably a bad movie in retrospective, but I was a kid, and I liked birds, so it was a done deal for me.
Anyway, I remember I was sitting in my kitchen, lost in a daydream as I was usually prone to do, when I heard the most unruly racket coming from outside. I was in the top floor of the house, so any noise that I can hear up there is alarming in it’s own right. The racket itself was an innumerable amount of birds – not just one kind of bird, but all kinds of birds that could be found. I know I said before that I live in a suburban area, but it’s still in Australia, so there are a heck of a lot of birds around where I live. They were going mental, which usually happens when there’s a snake nearby, but they were all flying through the air where no snake could be. I stood up and looked out the nearest window, and literally as I did so a barn owl crashed into the window. It didn’t fall, in fact it flew away immediately, but the poor thing was being swarmed by all the other birds. It kept on flying off trying to escape the swarm, but I couldn’t see it and it was quickly out of ear shot. I have heard that other birds swarm owls if they come out during the day because they’re predators and may steal their chicks/eggs. Since then I have not seen an owl in my area at all, and I wish I could see one again. I remember feeling extremely alarmed and concerned for it, and incredibly emotional afterwards.
My dream was that I was driving in a dark road n I seen a owl in the middle of the road so I pull my window down to scream out the way so it didn’t move so I had to go around it the owl n next thing u know he was in my window staring at me so I freak out n woke up from my sleep
I dream a brown injured owl flying towards my window, but changed direction towards its right and nvr enter my house, whats the meaning of this?
