In Ancient Egypt, the belief was that a hawk-headed spirit called “ba” would fly off a mummy to come back among the living as a hawk or swallow. The hawk symbolized a part of the soul that would be freed up after death and come back to the world of the living in the shape of a bird. It was also the animal of choice for the god Horus, god of the sky, who was represented with a hieroglyph depicting a falcon or hawk.
The popular belief in more modern times that birds like hawks or owls are announcer of death may be rooted in this myth. For the Greeks, the hawk and the eagle were associated with the god Jupiter, king of the gods. The bird is strongly connected with the realm of the gods.

I have been having absolutely insane experiences with red-tailed hawks since the start of July. At first I thought I was just acknowledging things I hadn’t before, until it started getting personal. There was a hawk that would perch on a scaffold outside my office window since I started my job. Every day he would sit there, simply majestic. I enjoyed just watching him relax and having a bit of a distraction. Anyways, one morning I got to work exceptionally early. I went to the same spot I do every day to smoke my cigarette and read my book before work. As I was reading, I heard a very strange cawing. I didn’t think much of it, until I picked my head up from the pages. A red tail hawk was sitting directly in front of me looking straight into my eyes. I was shocked. He was magnificent, but I was struck with complete fear. I tried to back away slowly, but we never left eyes. As I started to try and walk away, he swooped down, grabbed a small bird, and then flew straight over head so I could see his entire underbelly and the full span of his wings. I was in complete awe. I proceeded to go teach my class that day simply mesmerized. I had to go pick up copies for my students during class, so I took a walk back to my office across the plaza. I was fully engulfed with what had happened to me earlier that morning. As I was walking back to class, I picked me eyes up, and sure enough he was sitting in a tree directly in front of me. We locked eyes once more but this time I was completely frozen. He swooped down right in front of me and once more grabbed a small bird. However, this time, instead of swooping back up, he flew low to the ground so I could see his top half. His wings were so close to me, the gust of wind he produced made my sweater start to flow. There was a small old man in front of me panicking and asking me if I was okay. I couldn’t speak. I went back to class at a loss for words. After this happened, I became very interested in the meaning of hawks and what they represent. I came to find that in Celtic Astrology, the hawk is my spirit animal this year. SO, as if things couldn’t get any weirder from that day, IT DID.
The next week, I was sitting in my office at work, and sure enough I looked out the window and a red-tailed hawk was flying right past my window so I could see his underbelly, then returned again the same way so I could see his top. This continued for the next few days, and he started nesting right next to where my window is. Anyways, since then I have tried to become more aware of what is going on. Out of all the events that I have underwent with this hawk, today was the strangest by far. I moved to a new spot in the morning just because I like a change of scenery. I was on the phone with my cousin who is leaving the country tomorrow, and sure enough there are two red-tailed hawks sitting on a lamp pole about 100 feet in front of me. I didn’t mind them, and watched as they sat together on the small space. Anyways, all of a sudden they both swooped down, and circled back up right towards me. They flew so close to me again that I could feel the wind from their wings. I was so shocked, I began to cry. They circled me so many times, that I felt a bit threatened and decided to move. That did not help my cause at all. As I moved, they moved with me and followed me, continuously flying in circles are the general area I was in, and always making eye contact. As I was just about to go inside, a third one joined them. I watched two of them lock talons while the third continued to circle me. I cried more, and then ran into work and here I am sitting now pondering all these strange events. I am sorry for this long post but I am really trying to figure out the significance of these sightings, and why they continue to approach me in such a way where I feel like they are looking straight into my soul.
Wow. Just WOW. That is simply amazing. Hawk has been my spirit guide since I can remember, always there for me. And so it seems for you, too. Such beautiful powerful creatures. I find their presence totally comforting. Try not to be alarmed by them, but the next time they appear, take a breath, and even if it’s just with your inner voice, ask them what they are trying to tell you. They will send you more messages. But let them know you feel them, and would like to learn more from them. We are very lucky indeed. Enjoy your new guides and listen well.
Such an interesting experience! I would love to know what has since happened? Were you able to get any clarity?
Almost everyday, while driving to work, a hawk would fly along and land on a pole and watch my car go by. I tell my daughter it was my “buddy”. It somehow cheers me up and makes me feel things are going to be well for me that day. One day I saw a pair and I told my daughter my buddy has a girlfriend. They still chased after my car. It was a weird feeling thinking I must be special to these birds but why should I be? One day I saw a hawk flying alongside my car with a small snake in it’s talons. I felt so powerful. Another time, when my daughter was playing a tennis match, two ring-tailed hawks came and landed on top of the wall by me and just stayed there. It was the most awesome thing. My daughter told her friends that hawks “stalk” her mother. The last sighting is disturbing. I was driving and there’s a hawk in the middle of the road. It was screeching, almost as if crying in distress. I thought it must not be able to fly. I turned the car around so I can rescue it, and it was gone. Disappeared. I don’t know what that meant…Sorry, this is long.
Hi Mary Ellen,
I can tell you from experience that whatever you see the hawk doing is what is reflected in your life. You have to think back to the day that you saw the hawk with a mate, did someone join you -maybe a friend or lover? On the day of the tennis match, did your daughter win, just like the hawk won the prize of snake for food, this may have been foretelling you that you/your daughter would be the victor. When it was crying in distress did something bad happen to you or someone around you? The hawk is attempting to give you messages. Unfortunately, they can only give you signals that you need to decipher. You’re lucky though, because this also means you are getting more into your intuition.
I was vacuuming my swimming pool yesterday afternoon and all of a sudden birds in trees were going nuts making a lot of noise. I looked up to see why when something hit me in the back of the head and knocked my sunglasses off my head. I looked around to see what hit me when I saw a red tail feathered hawk had just landed on the roof of my house and stared at me for about a min. I was mesmerized by its stare and did not move. It then flew off into the trees and soared from one tree to another across my yard two times then took off to the south and didn’t see again. This was an incredible experience for me. I had no wounds from the hawk on my head. My hair was ruffled a bit but no injuries which astonishes me because the talons on those hawks are sharp and can cause great injury. Why did this happen to me? I still can’t believe it happened and am very curious as to why it did happen.
I had a similar experience this morning while biking with Poppy, my rescue Tibetan terrier. A harrier hawk swooped over me so close I could feel the air pushed by it’s feathers, then it turned and headed towards me again. Needless to say, I encouraged Poppy to “get along little doggie” and we moved away from its area. This made me think it was a sign and after reading about hawk as spirit animal, I believe it was a sign to step up to a higher plane of consciousness (hawks look from the heights). I feel I am ready to be of service from a higher plane and this was a good sign. Maybe your experience was a sign of this movement also.
Regards,
Shakti
On July 1 I came out my front door & spied a large feather on other side of driveway in front & slightly left of me; as I walked down driveway & turned there a duplicate feather by my car driver door. July 5 I had been outside watering fern & suddenly & fluttering still was a feather in driveway – as I approached & looked up, there was my benefactor who then did a circle in Briggs backyard then soared off to the south over meadow.
Here is my hawk story. My dad was killed in a motorcycle accident 13 years ago. He loved Red tail Hawks and after he died I began to notice them more in my life. My mom passed away a couple of weeks ago and in the days before she died I had some pretty intense Hawk experiences. 4 days before she passed, I was at my moms and came out of her house to find a red tail hawk on my van sitting looking at me. He let me get about 15 feet before he flew away. Two days before she passed, my brother and I were at my moms house and he went out to the garage to find the Hawk sitting on his car looking at him. I left later in the day and the Hawk was again 10 feet from my car. My mom dies early Thursday morning and my moms neighbor finds a red tail hawk dead in my moms yard under her flag that says Enjoy Life….
Well I’ve never seen a red tail hawk, only black.. When they appear normally it’s someone close to me is about to die.. Two weeks before my mom passed, I started seeing black hawks.. It troubled me and things started happening.. Like a bad heartbreaking feeling can over me telling me I need to tell my mom I LOVE HER.. I’m not an affectionate person but as days went by.. The black hawk was back.. My mom died 8/24/14 a week before her 69th bday.. I’ve seen them since then.. But a few days ago I had new blinds put in my living room.. And that’s the only place I would see the black hawks.. Well on yesterday I walk in my bedroom and just the top part of my window you can see out of.. Well there was that black hawk AGAIN.. I prayed and prayed it went away.. I didn’t sleep well last night.. And usually when that happens it’s something strange is about to happen.. Well this morning the black hawks is back.. Just chirping away.. I’ve did some research and just about everything I’ve read on black hawks is DEATH.. Since I was a child I’ve always dreamed about dead people, and seen things before it happens.. I had to share my story cause sometimes I’m scared and why do I have this trait..Its a beautiful story you wrote about your mom.. Thanks for sharing it with the world.. Please keep me in prayer

I saw the owl flying through the air. followed him through the pupil of an eye. he landed on a man with a concave face and then showed he was a hawk/falcon like being. he screeched and the man with a concave face looked my way (he had an empty chasm in his head, it looked like his face was ripped off) the hawk took off and flew a great distance (and I mean a great distance. at this point my body went numb), only to be thrown into a box and sealed up by a man (or two) who only had eyes (I have a bad feeling looking at the eyes)
I was getting a big urge to become a super hero the other day. I was considering several names and night hawk came to mind. After that i saw a hawk in a tree at my work. What does this mean
Time for you to work a practice of seeing and acknowledging your God given gifts

Maybe you need to reconsider your decision.
My 17 yr old son just died, and I was walking along a wooded trail in pouring rain. I asked if my son was ok where he was. Right then and there a red-tailed hawk flew out from the trees right in front of me and flew up into the sky.
This happened to me after my dad passed. I was going to his grave site for the first time, and was a complete disaster. I was crying and praying, I looked to my left and seen a huge hawk sitting on a wood post. It flew off the post, and flew along side my car. I knew it was my dad telling me he was ok. I’ve been seeing them ever since.
Me too as well it is hard to believe sometimes when it happens!
The late afternoon before my father passed away, I saw 2 red tail hawks flying outside of his hospital room. The next day, when he did passed, I was sitting in his front living room looking out the window and a Hawk was sitting on the railing outside. Then the day of his funeral, I saw a hawk sitting in a tree, in his back yard. I haven’t seen it since, but I do believe that was him telling me everything is ok.
My family and I have been dealing with just one bad thing after another. It all started thanksgiving day. All down hill from there. I’ve been at my breaking point. Today, I was in my room, something just told me to go to the front yard. There was a hawk feather center yard. Beautiful. So I picked it up. Got online and found this page. I am grateful for such a wonderful sign
Hang in there Luna… I have been there it will get better. Stick to positive thinking, and be determined to move forward even if its a small step each time. Good for you for looking for help online. You may also wish to speak to a counsellor. Sometimes having someone just ‘listen’ and provide support may make a big difference. Good luck and god bless :D
I’m hawk! I’m so ready to soar. YESSSS!
