The spider as a spirit animal offers many interpretations. Its symbolism has both a dark and a light side, reflecting its connection with life’s many facets.
Spider spirit animal: Symbol of creativity
In many cultures, the spider is given credit for its ability to weave intricate webs that are a miracle of organic engineering. If you have the spider as an animal spirit guide, you may have an affinity with acts of creation and the ability to create delicate, intricate things or ideas that are also strong.
As the weaver of the web, the spider symbolizes the spirit of creation. In several traditions, she’s the totemic symbol of the Mother, strong feminine energy. In Ancient Egypt, the spider was used as a symbol to represent the goddess of the Divine Mother, Neith. In some American Indian tribes, it is considered as the symbol for the creator of the world and by extension is associated with the female creative energy.

Patience: The wisdom of the spider totem
Like the spider waiting her prey patiently, the presence of this spirit animal in your life could point to the need to show patience regarding a project or some ideas that you are trying to realize. Giving some time while paying attention to how events are unfolding and acting when the opportunity truly arise might be a lesson of wisdom from the spider spirit animal.
Symbolism of the spider: Life spirit and weaver of destiny
Just like the spider weaves her beautifully engineered web, this spirit animal fosters the integration of all parts and aspects of your life into a whole. When the spider shows up in your life, this spirit animal could guide you to integrate some piece of your personal “puzzle” and gain a more coherent perspective on your life.
The spider is a spirit animal whose purpose is to inspire you to gain perspective on an issue or project you contemplate taking on. Feel free to explore the many facets of the problem you are facing in order to find the appropriate solution. The power of this animal encourages you to count on your ability to view things from multiple angles and weave mental and intuitive flexibility into your daily thinking.
Spider spirit animals and your shadow self
If the spider shows up in your life, this spirit animal may remind you of negative aspects of your personality or your life that need to come to the light more fully. For many, spiders inspire fear or at least some form of aversion. As such, they tend to be associated with what psychologists would call “the shadow self”. In brief, your “shadow” or “shadow self” are aspects of your personality or your life that you or other people deem unworthy or not likable and are therefore rejected or repressed.
The spider as a spirit animal does not typically take on these negative attributes. Nevertheless, its presence in your life might bring up negative feelings or unease. Whenever you feel your relationship with your power animal is characterized by tension, discomfort or fear, you can ask yourself where these feelings also appear in your life. Look for any association with your personal feelings, even if it indirectly leads you to other areas of your life, such as work, family, or a relationship for instance.
Here’s another question to ask to interpret the meaning of the spider spirit animal and the guidance it offers: What kind of relationship or connection did you or did you want to establish with this animal? Was the spider threatening or harmful? Did you kill or harm it? The answer will indicate the kind of dynamic that is shaping up between you and what the spider represents.
Dreams: How to interpret spiders and spider spirit guides in dreams
The symbolism of the spider in dreams is generally associated with the archetype of the feminine. If the spider appears in your dreams as a spirit animal guide or as your totem, pay attention to the messages it’s offering to you: They are likely related to an important direction you’re taking in your life.
When you dream of spiders, chances are that it refers feminine energy in your life. This dream symbol could represents a woman you know or your own connection with qualities usually considered as feminine, such as receptivity, patience, creativity.
An important element to consider when you interpret the meaning of the encounter with the spider in your dream is the reaction and feelings you experienced at that time: Were you afraid? Or rather intrigued or fascinated? Was the overall atmosphere of the dream scary and stressful or enchanting, adventurous?
If you want to kill it, you might be repressing some feelings or trying to remove tension from your life. If it looks harmful or it is threatening to you, you may feel that some aspects of your personality or your life are not aligned with your highest interest or that you or your people around you are rejecting them. The spider in a negative dream could symbolize your fears or an adverse influence in your life.

I went to bed and I had just read about how to see my spirit animal in my dream. I wauted horse.. but it was spider that came to my dream. It was kept in terrarium in the very hot greenhouse. I was furious how it was placed in so hot place on the top of the shelf. I wanted to take her away. In the end of my dream I was driving away and realised I forgot that spider into that greenhouse. Then I woke up!
So.. I think that means that I have forgot my feminin side and have locked it away.
And that is true. I am 41years and woman. I’ve been living just for my kids and havent made effort for being feminy anymore. I just live like an empty shell. I dont make up or wear like woman.
That dream woke me up and really made me realise this thing. Now I live on my own. My kids are gromn up and its my time to bloom!
Hello Neko! I can truly relate! I am 43yo and I have (and continue to) live my life for my children. Almost daily I give a count down of when all four of them will be adults (i’m two for two right now). The first thing I thought of after my Reiki session and master-teacher told me that the spider is my spirit animal, I knew it was because I have lost my femininity. I am used to be so happy being girly and feminine, now I just care to be comfortable and low maintenance. I have to find a compromise quickly. I’m so happy for you. I am happy that you realized that you need to focus on yourself right now. I wish you the best in your journey of rediscovery.
In waking life, I relocate spiders and, when possible, do not allow them to be killed. I’m that person everyone calls to get rid of the spider in their presence.
In dreams, my spiders are usually abnormally large and have no webs. When I see webs, the spider goes unseen. When I see spiders, there is no web.
It’s kind of strange. I suppose I see the spider as a predator, but we have a mutual respect for each other, and I don’t get bit. But the web, is an entirely different feeling. The web is curiosity and a sort of fear of the unknown. The trap that could hold me if I was unaware. Even the most dangerous spiders in my dreams I only sought to get away from. I don’t remember ever trying to kill them. Just getting myself or others a safe distance from them.
In one dream I had the spiders were growing rapidly and got bigger than houses. I took children out of the house and got in a van. As I was driving out of town to save the children there was a red stoplight at the edge of town. I stopped. I could see the spiders taking over the whole town behind me. Then I was aware of how silly the rule/law was at that moment and wondered why I actually stopped.. I then floored it and left a town full of giant spiders behind me in the distance.
Sometimes it’s important to break the rules of society in order to preserve life or the quality of that life.
This past Sunday, I attended my second Ayahuascha Ceremony. It was deep in the Mexican jungle. Prior to the Ceremony, I spent days mentally preparing, releasing fear and solidifying my intentions. I say this to say, my first ceremony was pure hell. The Ayahuascha medicine meets you were you’re at and shows you the raw truth. Mine was very dark and that experience shaped the last few years of my life. I’ve lived disempowered, dark and low, like my vision showed me during my first ceremony. With that context, I hope you can understand how fearful I was to attend another ceremony. I knew I had to, the medicine kept calling me. ”There’s more work to be done.” So asbi was saying, this second ceremony was deep in the Mexican jungle. That alone should have repelled me, however I am committed to my expansion. After miles of traveling down an unpaved dirt roads, full of pot holes, we arrived to the place of ceremony. It was a covered space with a cement ground. There were hammocks everywhere. I began to get my things and take a closer look and accept that the middle of the jungle, on a cement ground is where id spend my night tripping into higher dimension of consciousness and before I could reach the place, a wild black tarantula appears in front of me. It was far enough away not to completely startle me, yet close enough to completely paralyze me to the reality that, I wasn’t just visiting…it was an all night thing! Either way, in that moment I had to choose fear or flow. I choose to flow and this marked the beginning of a beautiful journey during the ceremony. I had a completely different experience from my first ceremony. It was pure magic because I choose to flow and it opened me to the rest of the medicine Mother Nature had to offer me. Overall, my experience deep in the Mexican jungle taught me so much and reignited exactly the medicine the tarantila came to teach: patience, creativity and feminine energy. I am choosing to see life from different perspectives. There is always another way to show up in life. Trust and love of the process is the recipe.
Thank you for this post. Yesterday I had a very emotional day. I had came to a realization that I had a fear of intimacy due to my troubling first year and a half in my relationship. I had trust issues and although I love my fiance very much, I had been so afraid to allow myself to open up my heart again and receive and give affection and love the way I used to in the beginning.
Afraid I would only get hurt again but I realized that things are different now and I have seen monumental changes and I cant allow the past and past mistakes to dictate future events.
So after an hour of crying and letting go of all of those fears and feelings I pushed deep inside of me, I felt lighter and more free. I felt like I was ready to allow myself to be open and vulnerable again and accept and give affection and love the way I have been craving.
Then last night, in my dream, I had vomited and started throwing up nests of baby spiders with some of the baby spiders coming out and scattering about. It was about 5 or 6 nests in total. And I felt or remember fearing that I had more inside that needed to come out and I was trying to figure out how I could completely cleanse myself. I also felt so embarrassed at people seeing these spiders coming out of me and I was pretty grossed out too. I think I had killed 1 or 2 of them out of fear and anger that they were inside me.
I think the dream was symbolizing me purging yesterday those thoughts, fears and feelings that I did not want to have in me. I kept them in but never wanted it. If anyone has any additional or different insight, I’d love to hear about it.
I’ve just had 2 incidents with spiders. In the past 2 weeks I have woken up, gone to make my bed and found a spider under my pillow. I killed the first one without thinking because it was a venimous White Tail spider and the second one from this morning, which was huge, I caught under a glass and put out in the garden. I am needing guidance at the moments as I am contemplating a very big late life decision to move house to another region. I’m nearly 80. So the right decision is vital. I was wondering if the spiders are the messengers I need to listen to?
I have a phobia of spiders ever since i woke up to one inside of my mouth (yes im a mouth breather). I would always run and get my boyfriend to kill it whenever i see one. Now i feel bad for every time i had done it. This helped me change my perspective on them.
That would be scary waking up with a spider in your mouth! We have lots of spiders where we live in the country, but since a few weeks ago, the only ones I seem to run into anymore are wolf spiders… they are very scary looking with their three rows of eyes (8 of them)! Just today, as I was reading about spider spirit animals, I spotted one on the sleeve of my tee shirt. I managed to scoop it up into a little bowl and slap the lid on to take it outside. When I emptied it out, it jumped back into my house through the open door and I had to catch it again. Then when I stepped further outside to put it out, another wolf spider tried to walk in!
Two big brown spider look me in my face last night while i sat out on my porch…. it’s was just so weird because i been noticing things about nature that i never noticed nor did i pay it any attention. I often see Hawk flying low in my area too. I want to send a picture
I have often had spiders drop in on me. From trees as I walk in nature, walk up beside me beside me as I work at my desk or in my house. I cannot even begin to figure how many times this has happened to me. Every time it happens I never feel scared or startled, more a feeling of an old friend dropping by. I usually find a safer place to deposit them. Many times while others scream and run to find something to kill the eight legged visitor, I usually swoop in to save it and find a safe place to free them. Why do I seem to have so many visits from these creatures?
Because you are awesome.
I have never been afraid of spiders. I always said to leave them alive, as they are a natural bug defense. If a web was in my way, I would try to move it with skill to another place.
I have let spider humans into my life as well. They have been excellent protection to me. The trouble with spider people is that they can turn on you and start to spin their web of lies in a way to cocoon you up. I find they never kill, just capture and then flee.
This is similar to the amazing Spider-Man, catching crooks like flies and leaving them for the police to deliver justice.
Some gladiators use swords. Some use nets.
I use a shield now. Sometimes that shield has been spider people. And yet spider people can be vicious when they are scared.
I have spider hieroglyphs that have appeared on my wall along with others. What does this mean
I have had a yellow orb weaver spider outside my window since @4:30 am, it seemed like he was waving all his legs at me for a minute & now I think he’s sitting still waiting on a meal, he hasn’t moved too far within the last 15minutes Does anyone know what this means???????

Well the brown recluse played its challenge I my life. That story maybe another time…
Mostly i believe God finds every way possible to get us to listen and what a perfect way through the world and life around us. Last year crows: first one then one again next day; then two and three…..and days were going by!
I began to ponder and consider. Looked up meanings. And there it was not fear them but hear the warning! I was sleeping in the couch for some reason for a bit. There is a big window directly in sight as u lie on this couch. You see we had shone septic tank issues the landlord was not trending to. The septic was leaking under the house and the air conditioner handler was pulling up from under the house besides the no cellar just septic residual spring under our floors.
So here i am lying there and waking up when crows were making all sorts of screeches and suddenly diving at this window then shooting up. This happened several mornings till i listened. Call the septic companies myself pay to get it done and take it out of the rent. I did this and no more crows. Warning of death? Possible! Probable, but because it was handled, NOT! Thank you God. Thank you animals.
