Cat Spirit Animal
Cat Symbolism
The cat carries many meanings revolving around the balance between seemingly opposites, such as inner and outer, action and rest, light and dark. It’s strongly symbolic of the connection with what usually hides in darkness or the unknown. The cat generally represents:
- Patience, waiting for the right moment to act
- Independence, yet enjoying social connections
- Spirit of adventure, courage
- Deep, relaxed connection with self
- Healing from the inside out
- Curiosity, exploration of the unknown or the unconscious
Let’s remember that the cat as we know it today mostly as a domestic animal was not a common animal for the American Indians. It was introduced by the European settlers and therefore is not part of the original totemic traditions. Nevertheless, cat symbolism has pervaded many ancient and modern cultures around the world. One of the most well-known is the worship of the cat in ancient Egypt. Nowadays, the cat is often part of our ordinary life and an inspiring animal totem for many of us.
“Cats, as you know, are quite impervious to threats.”

Cats and exploration of the unknown
Cats tend to be active at night and are able to see in the dark thanks to their highly adaptable eyes. Because they can be seen roaming around at night, they are associated in several cultures with the realm of the darkness. By extension, the cat has been considered as a symbol or representative of witchcraft and dark magic arts, especially if its color is black!
Another way to see the meaning of the cat as a spirit animal or totem is to pay attention to its ability to see in the dark and be at ease when most other animals and humans are not. If the cat shows up in your life as a spirit guide or you have this animal as totem, you may be inclined to start exploring areas in your life or aspects or yourself that you do not know well yet.

Cat totem wisdom: Acting when the time is right
The cat spirit animal is a good helper for those who need to find the courage to tackle lingering problems or concerns. The cat is known for being a great hunter using not just force, but a refined sense of timing in the moment of the attack. It seems to follow its prey and be able to patiently wait and position itself until it catches it.
By affinity with this feline, those who have the cat as a spirit animal may be able to tackle issues with patience, confidence, and a good sense of timing in their actions. The wisdom of the cat totem lies in the ability to remain quiet, observe, and then act when the time is right, so you’re better positioned to reach your goal and preserve your energy even in moments of tension and action.
Attributes of the cat spirit animal: Agility and flexibility

The cat totem: A call for independence
The cat is emblematic of a lifestyle that combines times of fierce independence and moments that are more social and cuddly. Being inspired by the cat’s spirit, you may foster the balance between your personal need for freedom and time alone with the company of others and social activities.
You may be called to bring more balance between your social life, whether it’s in your family, work or school, and time alone. The cat spirit animal could also encourage you to find a way of exploring your inner truths, as well as mystical truths, without sacrificing the connections you have with the rest of your environment.
Dreaming About Cats
Dreams are our subconscious minds communicating to us using the language of symbols. While some traditions think that a dream of a cat is a bad omen, this meaning is loosing favor in our more modern times. Dreams of cats have more often come to symbolize your feminine essence and sensuality. Dreams about cats may also be a message to tap into your inner mischievous and mysterious nature. A black cat in your dreams may be telling you to pay attention to your intuition. As far back as the ancient Egyptians and possibly farther, cats have been believed to be able to travel between dimensions. Is there a message from another dimension here for you?

I host a god named Bastet and she is a cat goddess but ordinary a tiger it’s weird she speaks when I am at need but also when I am dreaming I see a black cat she says it is a sign but never tells me
Am so glad am not the only one with cat visitations. I lost a cat a long time ago but have another and also care for some strays, I adore them. Over the years I have been lying in bed and suddenly felt a cat nuzzling into my neck and purring. My cat sleeps downstairs so I knew it wasn’t her. Being sceptical I assumed I must have dreamt it. However on my birthday or other special occasions I always pray to deceased relatives to send me a sign, this time I know for sure I was 100% not imagining it, the cat climbed from the bottom of the bed, up my legs and again nestled into my neck and head purring loudly. It then walked back down them again. It was so vivid and clearly a spirit cat that for the first time I felt a bit spooked. The fact it happened after me asking for a sign makes me completely convinced about this. I was 100% awake and knew instinctively it was a visitation. I feel foolish telling anyone I know so am glad I found this forum.
VERY COOL!!! I have experienced cat spirits also, mostly the spirits of my own cats after they have passed. Be proud not shamed for having this amazing gift of sensing your spirit animal totems!!! Love, Light & (((HUGS)) to you!!
Very good blog, thank so much for your time in writing the posts.
I ran over a cat and killed it
Maybe it’s the spirit of the cat you are supposed to have contacting you. Trying to get your attention.
i adopted a kitten from a pet shop. He was about 3 months old. For weeks I saw him again & again in that cage. I’m a cat lover & Finally I couldn’t stand it anymore & I paid the $100 to take him home.
He was an odd little guy. Always sweet, scared at 1st, but quickly became my friend. He would look into my eyes as if trying to discover how I thought. Extremely intelligent. Very gentle. Never used his claws to jump into my lap. I live in the country & have several cats who go in & out as they please. But I always keep them in at night especially when they are young.
But On one particular night
I had friends over helping to rearrange my house & my new little $100 cat
( pickles) went outside. I called him but he didn’t want to come in So I thought a little longer would be ok. But I was wrong. Pickles never made it back. I saw one lone coyote the next day & I knew pickles went too far outside the protection of my dogs.
The guilt I felt was heavy. I couldn’t shake it. Then one night as I lay down. I felt the particular silky feel of his long fur against my back & suddenly I was on the ground just as a cat would be hunting & searching. There were no words. The experience was pure emotion& excitement & joy of being alive. The spiritual experience is almost lost when attempting to explain it with words. It was an extremely different emotional base & thought process. But it was powerful. Very powerful. I could see underneath the grass & watched mice scurrying by & grasshoppers jumping for their lives & the emotion I felt was pure joy ! Not human joy. Human joy has words to describe it. This was pure emotion at its most intense. This was for a split second what it felt like to be a free feline. An experience I’ll never forget.
After a moment. The pure emotion (that cats obviously live
inside ) subsided & with one more feeling of silky fur on my back . Pickles was gone.
I knew that little Pickles had come back to save me from my guilt. Save me From feeling I had let him down. Pickles had come back to Thank Me For setting him free. Even if it was only for a short time.
What a wonderful gift he gave me & he was only here a few weeks.
So when someone says animals don’t have emotions. I can tell them for sure . That they are pure emotion. Humans are the ones who have lost that emotional base.
I had almost the same experience. It was with a cat named Elfie, he was a stray that was found at a crack house. From the moment my sister showed me his picture there was an instant connection. I really was not looking for another cat. I already had 4. From the moment he came home I felt unconditional love from him. But I had an underlying fear of him getting hit by a car. Never had this with any other cats. I live in a very quiet neighborhood. He never seemed to be able to see very good. I have a cat door and my cats go in and out all the time. My other cats range from the age of 13 years to 6years. On Elfie’s 1st birthday I was in the kitchen feeding the dogs and I got a sudden feeling of panic. I went out and looked all over for him. The next day when I came home, my sister had found him on the side of the road, he had been hit by a car. I could not stop crying. Two weeks later I had a dream where Elfie appeared with my horse, I had as a little girl and he looked into my eyes and I felt the love, he was ok and happy. He thanked me for loving him.
Oh my God, that was so beautiful it made me tear up!! Thank you for your beautiful story. Love from Ireland xx
Wow – what a powerful retelling – beautiful. I can’t imagibe experiencing something so profound. Have you had other spiritual experiences like this?

Long story short I have several black cats s sleep with me at night I can feel them walking can see bed move hear them purr and feel the vibration from them purring, for years now I also have many pics of them they are usually sitting around my shoulder area or my back,..I can also take pics of spirits can also feel them touching me and sometimes they are in my bed to.., at times I touch things o to people and my hands get very wavy feelings…??I feel blessed but at same time I ask my self why what am I supposed to be doing if any thing…. Does any one know what’s going on here?? They are harmless spirits but there are literally millions around me all the time…plz help
This sounds like you are a highly sensitive person by what you described I recommend doing research or seeing a medium
I feel cats walking on my bed at night. It warms me as I had and lost many cats over the years. My sister and certain friends feel them too.
Ask the spirit cat what it wants.
I am experiencing a cat walking on the end of the bed almost every night for the past 3 weeks. The spirit is getting bolder this morning. It walked next to my leg at dawn. My dog woke me up and after he left, I felt the the spirit cat walk against my leg. I haven’t experienced anything bad but it is creepy. Our house was built in 1986. There have been 2 previous owners and a few renters before us. Does anyone have any suggestions. I would love to hear other people’s experiences.
