Cat Spirit Animal
Cat Symbolism
The cat carries many meanings revolving around the balance between seemingly opposites, such as inner and outer, action and rest, light and dark. It’s strongly symbolic of the connection with what usually hides in darkness or the unknown. The cat generally represents:
- Patience, waiting for the right moment to act
- Independence, yet enjoying social connections
- Spirit of adventure, courage
- Deep, relaxed connection with self
- Healing from the inside out
- Curiosity, exploration of the unknown or the unconscious
Let’s remember that the cat as we know it today mostly as a domestic animal was not a common animal for the American Indians. It was introduced by the European settlers and therefore is not part of the original totemic traditions. Nevertheless, cat symbolism has pervaded many ancient and modern cultures around the world. One of the most well-known is the worship of the cat in ancient Egypt. Nowadays, the cat is often part of our ordinary life and an inspiring animal totem for many of us.
“Cats, as you know, are quite impervious to threats.”

Cats and exploration of the unknown
Cats tend to be active at night and are able to see in the dark thanks to their highly adaptable eyes. Because they can be seen roaming around at night, they are associated in several cultures with the realm of the darkness. By extension, the cat has been considered as a symbol or representative of witchcraft and dark magic arts, especially if its color is black!
Another way to see the meaning of the cat as a spirit animal or totem is to pay attention to its ability to see in the dark and be at ease when most other animals and humans are not. If the cat shows up in your life as a spirit guide or you have this animal as totem, you may be inclined to start exploring areas in your life or aspects or yourself that you do not know well yet.

Cat totem wisdom: Acting when the time is right
The cat spirit animal is a good helper for those who need to find the courage to tackle lingering problems or concerns. The cat is known for being a great hunter using not just force, but a refined sense of timing in the moment of the attack. It seems to follow its prey and be able to patiently wait and position itself until it catches it.
By affinity with this feline, those who have the cat as a spirit animal may be able to tackle issues with patience, confidence, and a good sense of timing in their actions. The wisdom of the cat totem lies in the ability to remain quiet, observe, and then act when the time is right, so you’re better positioned to reach your goal and preserve your energy even in moments of tension and action.
Attributes of the cat spirit animal: Agility and flexibility
When we observe cats, we see that they are characterized by the flexibility and agility. No matter the circumstances, it will always manage to fall back on its feet. By affinity with the cat totem, you may be encouraged to develop your flexibility at many different levels, whether it is in your physical body, mind, emotions, or spirit.
The cat totem is a source of inspiration to renew your perspective and have the courage to act or integrate it into your life. If the cat spirit animal shows up in your life, it may be time to explore new ways to look at things.
The cat totem: A call for independence
The cat is emblematic of a lifestyle that combines times of fierce independence and moments that are more social and cuddly. Being inspired by the cat’s spirit, you may foster the balance between your personal need for freedom and time alone with the company of others and social activities.
You may be called to bring more balance between your social life, whether it’s in your family, work or school, and time alone. The cat spirit animal could also encourage you to find a way of exploring your inner truths, as well as mystical truths, without sacrificing the connections you have with the rest of your environment.
Dreaming About Cats
Dreams are our subconscious minds communicating to us using the language of symbols. While some traditions think that a dream of a cat is a bad omen, this meaning is loosing favor in our more modern times. Dreams of cats have more often come to symbolize your feminine essence and sensuality. Dreams about cats may also be a message to tap into your inner mischievous and mysterious nature. A black cat in your dreams may be telling you to pay attention to your intuition. As far back as the ancient Egyptians and possibly farther, cats have been believed to be able to travel between dimensions. Is there a message from another dimension here for you?

For as long as I can remember, I have had the ability of seeing spirits. When I was young, I used to tell my mother that the zombies were back. I have had first hand experiences with shadow spirits, as well as animal spirits. I have never in all my life, ever found a cat who didn’t like me. Even the ones whom at peoples houses would ordinarily hide from newcomers, would and will come to me with ease.
More recently, I have been seeing a group of cats (three) in different areas, and one time at my ex-unbeliever ex boyfriend’s house, I had seen one and called the feline over to me. My ex was staring at me like I had lost my mind, being that it was an animal spirit, he was unable to see it.
And, most people the world over are unable to accept the things for which they are unable to see tangibly. Sure thing they believe in air and in God etc, but a spirit? that’s ridiculous… lol.
The cat spirit came to me, and hopped up on the table. I began petting it and giving it admiration, while my ex stared at me as if he thought I may have been high.
And being the big child that he was, he swatted his hand at the to him, “invisible cat”, and he laughed… mocking me. Not more than a second after he had swatted at the air, a loud and clearly audible feline hiss was heard by us both.
My ex’s eyes went big and he appeared to be terrified. He then looked over to see me smiling and once again petting the air, as I said to him…
“Just because there is something that you are unable to see or understand, does not make it non-existent”…
After that, he never questioned my abilities again.
Life is all about balance. And therefore… it is not important whether someone is a non-believer, or if they believe in full. Life simply “is”. So… believe me or don’t, as it is not my duty or my purpose to convince anyone of anything. I may not be able to change a flat tire, or frame a building yet… I am just a person who is able to connect frequently with my spirit guides, my third eye is wide open, and I have been blessed with special gifts, and that within itself is a beautiful thing.
I had the same experience! Except for I had a wolf. People ask why I growl a lot… but you have a cat! You must have lots of courage! What you said to you ex was absolutely true. I read all this and I really liked your experience it’s amazing!
This past week I have been seeing what I assume is a cat out of the corner of my eye. It is always in my house and the other day I even felt it bump against my leg (didn’t see it that time)
I guess it is guiding me through this strange part of my life and showing me how to land on my feet.
Thank you for the info!
So I was just looking up the spirit animals recently. They’re quite interesting if I say so myself. And as an author (albeit a novice yet), I find them quite helpful while creating a character of my own. The comments here are intriguing to say at least and some ideas (your experiences as you’ve said) are quite crazy, but still not crazy enough to be real.
Not to say I’m a non-believer or anything -I do enjoy reading about it and it’d be really awesome to have spirits watching over you and all- but just cause you believe doesn’t mean its actually real. I mean you don’t even know if cats are your real spirit animal yet. First get the facts right then state something as truth. Find out what actually is your spirit animal.
Not to be offending or anything but somethings that one if the previous comment said -Annoyed- were actually true. Mostly anyway. I’m not siding with anyone just so you know. And they were pretty rude too, there are other ways of disagreeing with anything.
Firstly, the fact that someone believes that cats are their spirit animal just cause they stare at them? I beg to differ. They do that quite often actually, that’s nothing out of ordinary. If one observes a cat they’d find that along with being curious cats like to observe too. Its something normal in their daily routine.
I too had a cat mind you. I had her since she was little kitten. She was a cute little thing. I loved to cuddle her specially. Sadly, I had a fight with her and she left the house. It was mostly my fault though but I was really frustrated that day -cause of actually everyone around me especially my mom who scolded me every minute of the day as she didn’t like pets of any kind. After that I’d always see her watching me on my way back from school. She’d follow me outside my house but never came near it agai. A couple years back I saw her again near my house with her own kittens! I couldn’t help but feel like an emotional parent that time. If anything I would’ve liked to apolozise to her. But I’m going off the track now. I had a habit of observing around me so I know what I’m talking about. And probably its not only you they stare at.
Other thing is stray cats do have a tendency to break into people’s house. Happens to me all the time. Literally. And its quite obvious they’d run away if spotted. That is not some sort of rocket science that its not understandable.
Some cases really did sound very much like that of schizophrenia!
That’s all I have to say. The information on the website was quite useful too. :)
Well I have something that will freak you nonbelievers in Animal spirits… I have this black cat that I see all the time. It follows me everywhere. And it’s not alive. It’s a sprit, it vanishes into walls and into mid air while I’m looking at it sometimes. I don’t just see it outside. It will be in my house with me, at school with me, and when i go on walks. It’s just an all black cat. Black nose, black whiskers, and dark eyes. Can’t really determine the color because when I see it, it only appears for a spit second or two. But yea… Have fun trying to make up some excuse for that
I was actually at a friends house and he said something was tugging at his pant legs when he would walk around and it freaked him out a bit, so I went to investigate and there she was, a fluffy black tipped brown coated kitten. He didn’t want her around and I figured how many times could one be able to adopt a ghost cat so I invited her to stay with my family as long as she was good and now she plays with my two living cats and checks out new people that come into my life and if she deems them an untrustworthy sort something will fall near them or they will say something to the effect of me being “weird” and just leave, saves me the time of rooting people out, not that I can’t.
I’ve named her spooky because of her ways of communicating who is “good” or “bad”, the black tipped brown coat she has also aids the name and she has green eyes. My family and anyone whom enters my home also sees her but usually more so as a “blur of dark fluff.” as my husband puts it.
Unfortunately, that’s called Schizophrenia ! If the hallucinations and delusions do not bother you or send you specific messages, then it doesn’t have to be treated, otherwise consider seeing your doctor.
Im currently suffering from kinda severe adult chicken pox blisters rashes and headaches..
Just last night around 3am a white cat entered my room, i was fully awake. I let my door open eaearlier so to let in fresh air.
It came in like it was looking for something under my bed… i gave it a snack of an unfinished fried chicken. Let him scratch the rubber flooring. It meowed to me and.i meowed back. Now i usually leave my door open a bit everynight so let in fresh air. But this is the first time i saw this all white cat and most stray cats in my place always head for the apartment building’s trash bins.
Ever since i was young i always had a bond with cats and everywhere i go cats always seem to find me and come to and jump on my lap and sometimes when i sit outside in my baccyard a large amount of cats would join me i like the vibe cats give i feel safe and secure when there around so deeply inside my heart i feel that the cat is my spirit animal and its crazy because my zodiac sign is a also leo which is a lion and domestic cat thanx
I have both Cat(What kind remands to be seen maybe it a fertal cat I don’t know)& Wolf(Gray Wolf)and Little Owl(Crowned Owl as there called) the Cat and dog are waring with each other I need help!!!
I know my animal spirits but I don’t know myself maybe I need to chooseWho I want to be…
It’s common to have many ( I try to limit my interactions to three at a time) spirit animals. Mine include the wolf, cat, dolphin, owl and a few others. I see them as guides, if one doesn’t like the other, there must be a reason and for that I chose to separate my wolf and dolphin, The dolphin sees that the wolf doesn’t have enough fun and pities the wolf, which angers the wolf immensely.Though with the dog and cat, could it be that the loyalty of the dog is irritating the cat’s need of Independence and personal space? Perhaps they are telling you that you need to find the balance between. I hope this has helped and feel free to talk to me further if you wish. Blessed be.
you can only have one spirit animal mine is a dog
This happened a very long time ago, when I was 5 or 6. My family and I went out to buy a pet. When we went into the cat room, I noticed this plump, buff (or very pale orange) tabby with misty hazel eyes. She literally walked up to me and started purring, unlike the other six-month-old kittens struggling into the box for the cat I chose. I chose this kind cat, who seemed to love me more than I loved her. As soon as I took her home, she wouldn’t stop following me.
I had a black hamster at the time, and I put her in her ball to let her roam the house. Eventually, I found the ball open and the hamster gone, and I started freaking out. I was looking for him everywhere, and, being a little kid, I started to cry. The cat soon found the hamster on the steps. I was so relieved.
When the hamster died, I was really upset, and to cheer me up my mom took me to the library. That worked a little bit, but it was really the cat who cheered me up when she relentlessly cuddled with me. I got over the hamster’s death over a couple of days.
And so it always went. My cat became very fat (I swear, it wasn’t me!) and whenever I tossed and turned at night, I would wake up finding her under my head, not disturbed at all. She was so funny, especially the way she drank, dipping her paw in the water, licking it, doing that a few times before finally drinking like a normal cat.
And then, one awful night, my cat got liver cancer and had to be put down. She was 7 years old, which was young. I wouldn’t stop crying for months and months. In fact, really, it happened a couple of years ago, and I got over it just recently! We buried her in the yard and had a funeral for her. Soon after, we moved far away. It actually kinda fits, because including my cat, I had 3 pets, and the place we moved to only allowed 2.
After her death, I’ve had many dreams about her. One night, only weeks after my cat died, I heard strange meows that my other cat didn’t make. It seriously sounded like my old cat’s meow. It was a yowl of defiance, and it freaked me out. Then, I saw a white shape resembling a cat jumping into my bed. I turned away, frightened, but was comforted by the feel of a cat kneading on your back. I swear it wasn’t a dream, and I remember it clearly to this day.
Once I considered the events of her life, I began to have the feeling that my cat was my spirit animal. What do you guys think? Please reply!
About the whole cat thing, I just found out that she probably is my spirit animal! I meditated for a few minutes, and felt her fur between my fingers, she rubbed against my back and a saw her pale fur.
Oh, and she has a white diamond on her chest. I don’t know if it symbolizes anything or not. Probably not, but I’m curious.
Yup. She’s your spirit animal! If she’s with you she protects you! Your cat sound so adorable!
ya if u dont believe in spirit animals get off this sit u have no bussiness being here jerk
I’m neither here nor there when it comes to believing in this stuff. I’m a nanny of a 3 month old baby boy. His moms a twin & I’ve worked for her twin sister for 5 years. I’ve had this silly feeling for a couple months that I see a cat out of my peripheral vision. I don’t know how I know it’s a cat, I didn’t question it. I have only seen it walk past the babies bedroom door. That’s not that weird.
A couple weeks ago my roommates cat jumped onto my bed as I was falling asleep, walked across my pillow & off the other side. As I laid there I realized that my door was shut & the cat was in my friend s room.i verified in the morning that the real cat wasn’t in the room. It didn’t feel like the pressure of the cat was on my pillow, I felt the weight in a different way. And I saw it but not with my sight. Still wasn’t that freaked out. I could have been dreaming.
I was at the other house Saturday. Moms twin has twin 6 year old girls. I saw the cat walk past their room. Not really with my eyes, like a 6th sense I guess. I know that sounds like utter bologna. There’s no dead cat that I was close with & I’ve heard that ghosts haunt places, while demons follow you around, like the movies. So I told the moms. Babies mom laughs but girls mom believes in this stuff & came over her sisters house today. I hadn’t seen anything all week, today’s Wednesday. Last night she says the playroom clock flew off the wall & forward a few feet. Before she left 2 strange (real) cats were outside the front door staring at us til she drove away, not normal. What’s going on??
I think the cat is my spirit animal because when I accidently slapped my cat, I heard what it was saying in its head: OW! Why’d you do that, and often all of my cats will cuddle with me, and I’m in love with the Warrior cat series, I always have a soft part for cats, even if they claw my eyes out. My cat, Cinder meows at my door till I let him in,when I close my eyes, I see a cats eye which is blue,I image in my mind a cat with blue eyes, white and light blue like the sky.
First of all, you must be pretty bored, Annoyed, to be commenting on things you clearly don’t understand, so kindly, put your head in a blender and hit frappé.
I believe the cat is my spirit guide for many reasons. It seems that cats have a strange attraction to me and will often approach me, even notoriously timid ones. They will often stare into my eyes giving me a sense that they are ‘reading’ me and will often act more like a dog with me, coming when called, meowing constantly as if trying to communicate something and I have noticed that by mimicking the same meow made, the cat will often react as if it understood whatever it was I just said.
Back to Annoyed, clearly you ha e a long way to go to achieve inner peace and balance (or your aim was to be a pathetic troll), either way, I sincerly hope you find your center and realise that nothing is at it seems and you are a valid and unique individual, not socially special in any way, just relevant as you have your own purpose and lessons to learn in life. May you find peace
same here the cat seems to call to me in every way shape and form. everyone says cats are useless and i always get offended.
