Whale Spirit Animal
Whale Symbolism
The whale is commonly associated with emotion, inner truth, and creativity. Here are additional meanings for this totem:
- Wisdom holder
- Physical and emotional healing
- Keeper of history
- Importance of family and community
- Emotional rebirth
- Peaceful strength
- Communication
Among the most recognized modern tales of the whale as a teacher is that of Captain Ahab’s pursuit of the gigantic Sperm Whale, known as Moby Dick. Superstition, the sea as a transformative vessel, and an examination of the massive mammal as a creature of undefined greatness pervade the novel. The whale is symbolic of that which cannot be easily vanquished — just as a person’s inner truth, voice, and creativity cannot be easily silenced or subdued.
The Whale Spirit Animal, a Messenger of Good (and Bad) Fortune
In some cultures and traditions, healthy whales swimming free are fortuitous. To see a whale unexpectedly is a sign of good luck. On the flip side, seeing or stumbling upon a diseased or beached whale is considered a bad omen that heralds ill fortune.

The Whale Spirit Animal Requests Emotional Rebirth
If the whale is calling to you, then it might be time to take inventory of the emotional pressures you’re under. Just as the whale can dive into the depths of the sea and endure immense pressure, people holding the whale spirit animal also are able to endure both emotional and physical pressures. But not forever, just as the whale must surface to take new breath, so must you. If the whale is showing up this could be a powerful opportunity to remember, let go and forgive. Making space to give birth to your fullest expression and flowing creativity.
The Whale and Folklore
The whale is a central power animal recognized in many Native American folklore traditions that is honored and respected, especially among Native American tribes on the Pacific Coast. As a compassionate, solitary creature, the whale is closely associated with wisdom and awareness of the spiritual realm.
Whales and Dreams
The whale as a power animal blends the conscious and unconscious. When seen in a dream, the large mammal is offering guidance to help you become a mover and shaker who will take charge your life without hesitation.
Dreaming of a whale means it is time to stand up and speak up. Whales are frequently interpreted as representing awareness and intuition. It is time to turn up the volume on that inner voice of yours and listen more closely to what it has to say.
A whale’s immense size can also be symbolic of feeling overwhelmed. Maybe you have taken on too much at work, in your personal life or social obligations. It may be time to cut back some.
Whale Hunts
While many traditions look to the whale animal totem as a teacher, hunting the animal is also central to some tribes and cultures. Take, for instance, the Makah Tribe in Neah Bay, Washington.
Whales are central to nearly all aspects of Makah culture, from the tribe’s songs and designs to basket weaving. Hunting the power animal is considered a lesson that offers discipline and purpose to the Makah people. The hunt, which incorporates age-old ceremonies and rituals, also yields practical items, such as oil and sinew, which can come in handy during difficult times.

I had a dream last night about whales they were swimming and playing..
The night I did DMT, I had a powerful dream that I took my castle back. (Apparently I have a castle by the sea)…I walked down to the water after I’d reclaimed it, and an enormous whale the size of a small city rose out of the ocean and dove down in a breathtaking display. I was in awe and at peace. It was beautiful
I had a dream last night there was a beach I was playing and enjoying In with family..then a shark popped up and starred killing next was this beautiful whale as well started killing..it was after me and I just kept getting away it was surreal..oli don’t remember much but this dream caught my attention I am going through so much emotionally with my fiance I can’t help but to think what it is trying to tell me..
I also had this dream I was in a water hole with my family then this great white tried to kill everyone but it turned into an orca then I saw a white whale in the depths of the water hole the orca started chasing me and I kept getting away. Then I was in an ocean was so weird I wonder what it means.
I saw many whales playing/ jumping and lastly mating!
Last night I dreamt of a pod of beautiful white whites swimming past a dock that I was standing on then the largest on looked at me and them came out of the water and was trying to pin me against a screen door at that point I woke up is there a special meaning to this? I recently lost my son and daughter in law and we are fighting to see my grandson in a court battle at this time as well I have had a lot of business changes or opportunities should I sell or fight to take the business to a new level ????
I dreamt I saw thousands of beached whales (or about to be) and I was crying because they were crying – when I got home it was on the news that it was all across the world and they called it instant extinction!
I dreamt that i saw a mama whale and calf in a canal. People were so happy to be able to see them. I wanted to touch them and connect with them. The mama rose up for one of the people to touch her. He was so happy. I was happy for him too but sad that I couldn’t do the same. I started to tear up. Then I realized that the mama and baby were trapped in the canal by the on looking boats and I was afraid for them. Then I woke up.
In my dream I’m some sort of thrill seeker or crazy evidently (in real life not so much of either lol) I’m on this boat trying to catch up to a hurricane that’s miles away. I’m having this dream from a birds eye view, looking down on the boat. I can hear weather updates on a radio. it would appear I’m in the carribeans or somewhere tropical, crystal clear water and no sign of the hurricane weather I’m chasing. When this huge whale appears swimming along side of the boat. I’m no longer interested in the hurricane. I dive into the water(now experiencing the dream in first person) it’s as bright as day underneath the ocean. I’m amazed and in awe of the creature! I don’t feel any anxiety or fear at all. Which typically I do with water dreams. As I swim up to the whale a voice says to me it’s a Phantom Whale. I reach out and touch it as it swims by. My surrounding then get completely dark. The voice then says below where I’m at is 30 miles deep. I wake up.
I dreamt last night … I was on a floating device being towed by a hum back whale it was taken me out to sea and then I got scared I saw an abandoned wreck of a tug boat … I grabbed on and got inside but I still had an uneasy feeling of sinking and going beneath the water . Then I awoke still remembering the enormous hump on the whale in front of me pulling me out .
Last night my dream consisted of me swimming/diving in the ocean with a humpback whale, as well as encounters with an orca whale and what appeared to be an atlantic white-sided dolphin (I googled it & this was the dolphin that resembled the one I saw in my dream). I was mainly swimming with a humpback whale, but I spotted an orca trying to feed. It’s prey got loose & I managed to catch it & offered it to the orca. The orca ate my offer & allowed me to touch it before it swam away.
I then swam with the humpback whale, & witnessed it feeding. I was in the middle of the school of its prey & the whale kindly avoiding me as it engulfed them. While I was treading water, I then encountered the dolphin. It was very friendly, coming to socialize with me for little bit & then it said bye by swimming backwards.
I had to go back home, as it was getting late & I said good-bye to the humpback whale. My dream kind of skipped & I was arriving at the beach. I was running towards the water in my excitement to join my humpback whale friend who was waiting further out in the water. Aaanndd then I woke up. I kind of wished I could go back to my dream. I felt so tranquil and peaceful when I was diving/swimming with this whale.
I am going through a lot these days both emotionaly and physicaly. A whale came to me for the time of my life while in meditation. After reading its meaning I understand why it came to me. Thank you. Namaste
Last night I dreamt that I went to visit my cousins in the hills, while I was there I saw a beached whale he appeared to have been dead. I went closer to the the edge to see better because he was beautiful then I fell over right on top of it. I didn’t turn around to look at it I just screamed out to my cousin for help he assisted me by letting down a rope. Its just weird a whale was nowhere on my mind before I went to bed. What could it mean.
