Coyote Spirit Animal
Coyote Symbolism
The coyote often symbolizes the trickster or joker. However, its symbolism is associated with a deep magic of life and creation. It can be considered as having the following meanings:
- Jokester
- Adaptability
- Reveal the truth behind illusion and chaos
- Playfulness
- Paradoxical nature, personality difficult to categorize
- Beware of the dark side of things and play on your resources
The wisdom delivered by the coyote spirit animal is rarely direct. The way of the coyote is to teach through ways that do not appear straightforward. It may also use subterfuge or trickery to reach its goal or deliver its message.
Don’t be fooled by the coyote’s way: In any circumstances you encounter, no matter how pleasant or clear they appear to be, there’s a hidden wisdom for you to reap. Be aware of the round about ways of the coyote totem and its teachings.

Coyote spirit and not taking things seriously
If the coyote spirit animal crosses your way, you may be encouraged to not take things too seriously. Perhaps you need to lighten up or change your perspective about an issue or matter that has been on your mind for a while.
Call on the spirit of the coyote to support you in refreshing your perspective and lighten the weight of circumstances. Even if the coyote is often presented in many stories as a trickster and a spirit animal bringing complication to whoever crosses his path, it is a good reminder to keep things simple and open up to possibilities.
Coyote totem and teachings with a sense of humor
It’s sometimes hard to grasp the wisdom of the coyote without experiencing some unsettling or disruptive feelings. Here, serious pieces of wisdom and playfulness often go hand in hand and appearances may be deceiving. The wisdom of the coyote may appear through a joke or what shows as trickery.
There’s often wisdom in making fun of serious matters and letting go of certainties. Call on the coyote to reinvigorate an appreciation of life’s wisdom through diversity and richness. This animal totem provides his teaching with a good sense of humor.
The Coyote, the magic in life, and the unexpected
The coyote totem is symbolic of the magic in life and creation. In some traditional stories, it is associated with the dark side of witchcraft and is considered as a bad omen. The flipside of these negative associations is the spirit of resourcefulness and ability to survive.
When the coyote spirit animal shows up in your life, it might lead you to experience the unexpected more fully. Surprises await you. Pay attention, you may also find piece of wisdom in the most unexpected places. By affinity with the power of adaptability of the coyote, you may be called to be flexible and adjust to a situation that you did not anticipate.
Dreaming About Coyotes
Dreams are our subconscious minds communicating to us using the language of symbols. In Native American tales the coyote is a creator, teacher, and a keeper of magic. The coyote often represents a magical power or trickster god. Coyote can appear when you are being initiated into your next level of spiritual growth. The coyote is also sometimes considered a symbol of weakness, deception, hypocrisy. Coyote can also be a reminder not to be too serious and to keep your sense of humor.

Hey… My names maddie, nice to meet you!!
If you feel like the coyote is your guide, he may in fact be. I will give you a heads up, he looks totally looks like what your not expecting. Its hilarious. He likes to rip you apart comically in dreams too, so if you have had dreams of embarrassing events from the past lately, heads up yall. Do you have a rough time laughing at yourself, but still make jokes? If so you need to laugh at yourself. In order to know true humor you must laugh at yourself. Have you been laughed at and teased in your past? That sucks… But you need to let go. I have been made fun of too because i am a weirdo. High five! Life sucks! Oh! And one more very important question…
Do you have a big stomach? I do… It’s really funny.
Thank you and yes to basically everything you said.(Including large stomach question)
So… I had a weird dream that i talked to some ravens in a river, and they grabbed me and brought me to the bottom part of the river. I thought they were going to kill me, so i screamed “Coyote! Help!” And coyote caught them with a net and killed them. Then, coyote gave me a necklace that looks like a fishnet. It had a weird looking brown stone on it. And it didint fit cause im kinda tubby … Lol. I was on a wooden fishing boat and coyote sang randomly about how he has been with me since i was little.
I dont get it at all, i know im supposed to not get it, but i feel this is my only hope to understanding what the heck this means.
Later in the dream i was in a city with buidings and i saw crazy lightning in the sky. I thought it was awesome. I think the lightning means something important. I just dont know what it means. Please help me understand.
Maddie
I believe the coyote came to save you and to tell you to not take yourself to seriously and increase your sense of humor. The crows were jealous of your wisdom and wanted to take you away because of you. Some people in your life envy your wisdom. The lightening is showing you about the beauty all around you. I think this dream was telling you to don’t take yourself to seriously, your are wise and have nothing to prove, and to appreciate the beauty all around you.
I deeply appreciate the advise you have given me.
But the lightning dreams have been occurring frequently ever since this dream. Coyote has been visiting me too. Last night I had a dream I was struck by the lightning. It was like I was awake in the dream. I was in the same room I was sleeping in. I was not expecting the lightning but I was scared as it hit me. I could feel my veins popping out. It sounded weird. I prayed to spirit as I was touched by the lightning. When I woke up i saw numbers on the wall and a weird black hole surrounded by red. It was like a giant red eye. Before this dream happened, I would have dreams with weird things in it, and they would actually happen when I woke up. It still have these dreams. One time I saw a jewelry box with a mans face on the box, he said to take a ring and keep it. He was very nice. I went to a garage sale the next day and the same man was there and he gave me a ring just like the dream. I think this is pretty coolieo that this is happening, but I would like to know why. I am wondering if I can start receiving better visions so I could possibly help others. But sadly, the visions are extremely random.
If you could possibly help me, that would be nice.
Maddie
To be honest, the description of your dreams are quite traumatizing for me, mainly because I have had my nightmares come true before. Some of my dreams are a bit strange. When I was dreaming about it, it all made perfect sense, but when I reconcile in the morning, it seems so incoherent. I had this dream that a wolf was fighting against a coyote in a clearing in a snowy forest – that’s all I can remember. It seemed to make sense at first, but when I thought about it – what’s a coyote doing in the snow? My dreams seem to be random and mismatched events glued together into a story that only makes sense if you don’t consciously think about it. I’m the type of person who refuses to believe in claims with no proof or solid evidence, but I just have this impulse to think that dreams actually mean something, even though nobody knows for sure. I have read in a psychology book that dreams consist of miscellaneous events that have taken place in your life. But what about visions that foretell the future? Dreams are beyond my comprehension. If you were to read the comments on the other animals, most of them have something to do with dreams about that animal, or an unforgettable encounter with that animal. If anyone’s a psychologist here and has done a bit of research on dreams, or someone who has a vague idea on how dreams work, would you mind telling me, whether it’s proven or just a hypothesis? Thanks.
Wolfie
Dreams are what you make them. Dreams are what you perceive. I myself refuse to believe in narrow mindedness. I myself refuse to stop thinking of possibilities. In the “past” we found the “future”. That was once the present, and this is the present now. If that is the present, then what makes this not the present aswell? I believe in the repetition of events. That event which happened in my dream was hauntingly erie. But it was a beautiful kind of erie. *cough*. Why not believe in visions?
Omgollyranchers I am alot like a cyote , and other animals.
What does a dream of a cyote mean
It mean cyote.
2:00am in the morning me and my fiancé are strolling down a path running along side the park near our apartments and we both get a feeling that something is walking behind us. We both turn around and see a large size coyote moving as if it were silent steps. It was eerie because he circled us as if he were with a pack, but he was alone. He stood and stared at us as we slowly went through the gate of apartment complex, and we slowly moved while watching him or her watch us. I had never seen a coyote before and this coyote moved so silently like a fox. Me and my fiancé hurried in towards our home and still this coyote walks through my mind every day which is what led me to search for the definition of why a coyote would enter into my life. Why? What does this mean? Was this coyote a spirit? Wow
Look behind you.
This group of commenters needs to work on grammar and spelling.

You can have many spirit animals throughout your entire life. The best thing to do is not even question if things like that are possible. Even if you already have a totem spirit if you feel something else calling to you you should just go with it
hmm well i am wolf and connected to owl a bit, but when im with my friends i am deffenetly connected to the coyote! happy funny trickster! silly and just plain dopey! but i also know coyotes are smart
About a year or so ago, I was heading to school and as I headed out the door, I saw a coyote looking at me(originally I thought it was a wolf but later found out it was a coyote) and then I blacked out and fell to the ground. My mother found me and took me to the hospital and they took my blood pressure, blood sugar level and other blood tests to see if anything was wrong, there wasn’t, I still have 0 clues as to why this happened to me. Coyotes usually never come around our house, and suddenly, I see this one look at me and I black out? I’m clueless, anyone have any insight as to why this happened to me?
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unc unc unc
In my present and past home I have had coyotes come into my yard in broad daylight. Non-aggressively. I have no small animals. This morning it was a very young pup who was very timid and gentle. I live in city limits and it was trapped on the inside of my chain link. I still have no idea how it got there. Animal control assured me that they would take it unharmed to a out of city limit area. I feel some sort of connection with this animal, which is why I searched the meaning online. Any comments or ideas as to why the coyote literally lands in my lap frequently??
I keep seeing coyotes either in the middle eb of the road staring at me or running across the road orout infields playing I am just wonderingif that has any meaning and I livein the city so its not like its common and I do not believe in coincedants
This’ll probably sound a little dumb ,but i see a lot of dead coyotes (side of the road, snares, ect.) but when i see them i feel a small sense of hurt/longing as if a small bit of sadness creeping up my spine ,and i will involuntarily stop and stare at it until it passes (im usually in the car). Its hard to explain…
so it feels as if your own kind (human) has died and left out to rot? i feel like that when i hear of coyote and wolf cruelty.. i have 3 totems orignal is wolf thought but coyote and wolf are the closest and i feel a strong pang of sadness when i hear of deaths or see images of there deaths
