Owl spirit animals as messengers of change

Owl spirit animals are symbolic of death in many traditions. In most cases however, it should not be taken literally: If the owl is associated with death, it can be viewed a symbolic death, meaning a transition in life, important changes that are taking place or about to happen.

When the owl shows up in your life, pay attention to the winds of change. Perhaps you are about to leave some old habits, a situation that no longer serve you or bring something new in your life.

The owl could also be a animal spirit guide offering you insight about a moment of transition. Since this totem animal is often associated with death, when an owl shows up in a dream, it could mean that you are receiving guidance regarding personal transformation, change.

In many dream interpretations, the owl can represent a deceased friend or family member who comes back in the dream in the shape of a spirit animal.

Birds, especially birds of the night, are often associated with departed souls. The owl is no exception. The night owl was the animal associated with the Lord of Death in the Aztec tradition. There’s a similar meaning for the Celts who associated the owl’s spirit with an animal announcing death, especially if it flies into someone’s window while a sick person is inside the house. It was viewed as the spirit animal that would carry the souls of the departed to the underworld.

About a month ago while out watering my gardens when right at dusk to dark at night I started getting visited by an owl. A few days later there were 3 owls that came and watched me water my gardens. Here it is about 3 weeks later and last night I had the most amazing unreal situation happen. I started watering the gardens and seen my owl friends come to watch, there was one on my shed, 2 on a fence to the right of me, 2 sitting ontop the trampoline net, 2 on top of my screen porch, 1 on the fence right in front of me, 1 on the power box on the side of the house, 2 on the fence to the left of me and 2 in a tree in the yard. I was totally in awwwww at how many owls were sitting around watching me water my gardens. Last night there were 2 different breeds of owls around me, this was new because before they all almost looked identical. I was in total amazement. I slowly approached the one owl on the fence in front of me to see how close it would let me get to it, I just had to know. The weirdest event happened when i reached my arm out to take a picture of it once I was about 5 feet away, the owl took flight right at me and landed on my shoulder before I could put my arm down. I almost freaked out because it caught me by total surprise but then thought real quick to myself and realized how fricken awesome this was. so I just stood there and turned my head towards the owl and it just looked right at me. It sat there for about a minute and than flew back to the fence. It was a smaller owl that couldn’t have stood taller than my head. Now another strange thing about the owls is they will sit there and watch me but as soon as my daughter or my wife or anyone else comes out to see them the owls fly away. They dont like visitors, lol.
Now there are some huge changes I am venturing on in my life right now to start up something new. I see it clear as day and it definitely puts an old life to rest for me. Others remark that they think my idea is amazing but none of them truly see it how I do or grasp it the way I am. I dont know if the owls are a sign that things are about to change and the vision I see is going to become a things of reality real soon, I could only pray this to be true.

Any interpretation of having an audience grow to more than 8 owls and more then one type of breed being intrigued with me?

Totally awesome…they are “hitting you over the head” with a message. Embrace who you are and don’t be afraid of your own path. Maybe a message to develop and/or to listen to your intuition, develop your spiritual side in a real and meaningful way. Don’t be afraid of who you are and showing “yourself” to the world. Meditate and ask for “owl guidance,” esp. after seeing them. Sit in the garden for a few moment in silence after their visit and listen….

Lucien that story is very, very cool! I love your interpretation of it all so stick to your own story, it’s your intuition speaking!

Glad to be able to add owl to my spirit guides/totem. I am a Leo and a Chinese Fire Horse, and those fiery energetic traits were strong when I was younger for sure (up to about 30, I am 47 now). But about 15 years ago I really began accelerated spiritual growth and needing much more time alone to ponder and delve even deeper and my life slowed down.
Kinda like wisdom comes with age I guess. So while I can still get fiery energetic on occasion, owls presence has more prominence in my life. My middle name is Lynn and that is associated with pool/pond/gentle water, etc. Gentle is associated with deer spirit and that fits me, and water is feminine and intuitive, so maybe there’s the numerological/nomenological (name) link with owl. I have always been a nite owl since I was a young kid. Carrie is my first name and represented by color red and energy so thats in line with my Leo creativity and Horse passion energies, which really, really do accelerate at nite. sometimes to the point where I am finally going to sleep when others are getting up for the day…lol. I really do find that most of the ‘divinitory’ arts line up and make sense/connect. Its is interesting and enlightening I think to learn or reveal such ancient wisdom. Some might be interested to check out their own numerology by birthdate and by name, as well as their astrology or Chinese astrology or indian astrology. Fascinating the connections you can see! Peace, light, Love and Namaste.

I, too, am a Carrie Lynn, and an Owl spirit, though I am a Cancer and a Chinese Earth Snake. Don’t find too many people who have both my first and middle name, and I find it interesting that we have the same spirit animal. 🙂 Very cool.

I always liked owls and associated with them but one day I just started hearing owls at night. This happens a few times a weeks. During the same time I had decided to get a savage owl tatto. Ever since I’ve seen it as my spirit animal. I had never though actually taken a test until today. Confirming by this source that it is my spirit animal. I do agree though that we can have different spirit animals throughout your life.

Agree too Axel, as you can tell by my post…lol

Sorry if this is a bit long but I need to explain first.

I took the quiz about 10 minutes ago and got the deer. I read its page and found alot of similarities between me and the deer (I don’t remember having any dreams about them or haven’t seen them in person).

But I just took the quiz again (only changed 3 answers) and got the owl.

Recently I have been thinking what my spirit animal would be and for some reason I was thinking it would be an owl or tiger (I haven’t had any dreams about tigers). But I think I may have had a couple of dreams with owls in them when I was (alot) younger.

I guess I was hoping to get advice/help with this. I’m just confused right now.

Hi, I have been studying Shamanism over the last 18 months or so but have been I guess what most would consider Pagen all of my life (be it only 35 years lol). What I have learned is that we can have more than one Spirit Animal (Guide) and that they can change as our lives change. So it could be possible for both Deer and Owl to be your Guides at this time in your life.

I hope that you find this helpful…Love an Light to you during your journey.

Need some input. A girlfriend has had a dream for 2 nites with 8 owls in it. Also at the end of the dream is a person holding a pure white chicken, with beautiful red comb. The owls are 2 sets of three and one set of 2 at different levels in a tree. Any meaning to this dream? She is going to let me know if she has the same dream tonite again.

        • Arial Hakon June 17, 2014 at 5:54 pm - Reply

Meaning of the dream pretty much depends on what those things may be associated with and mean to your girlfriend – for instance, to most people dreaming of wading into water means to enter the unknown, while for me it means entering danger to save a life (I nearly drowned as a child). Dream interpretation would also require some familiarity with what is going on in her life at the moment. Clearly since the dream happened more than one night, her subconscious is trying to get a message across to her conscious mind, or is trying to work out a problem that she has been concerned with for at least two days. Perhaps the question you should ask her is what do these things mean to her and what feelings does she have thinking about them.

    • Ann June 10, 2014 at 3:40 pm - Reply

I agree with Kharmacat; you can have more than one. You may need the advice of one or another at different stages of your life. The owl is strongly present in mine now, but the lion, bear, and especially the crow are also guides. The animal spirit that presents depends on what guidance you need at the moment, what life changes are happening, etc. Look for their subtle message throughout your day and in your dreams.

So this is kind of sad… I started noticing owls appear right before I got pregnant a few months ago. Unfortunately, I miscarried at around 10 1/2 weeks. The doctor said the baby stopped growing at 7 1/2 weeks. I was in the woods during that week and heard an owl very clearly, which is pretty unsual considering I haven’t heard one in years. I was comforted to read the paragraphs about owls being the carrier of souls after death, but taken aback at the same time. Just a reminder of how mysterious and close the spirit world is.

This makes a lot of sense for me, but it’s kind of creepy how accurate this is. I love owls because they’ve always been beautiful and mysterious to me, but I’m not a fan of witchcraft…

I took the test two times, seeing as I am a bit of a two personality kinda girl. First round I got the butterfly, and the second I got the Owl. I can’t figure out echo one would be my spirit guide. It’s odd, really. I believe I’m now going to look even closer in my life to see which one it’ll be, for I show signs of both of the creatures.
