Dragonfly totem and the search for personal authenticity
The dragonfly is a fascinating animal characterized by the beauty of its colors, the lightness of its wings and its scintillating body. The meaning of this power animal is associated with the symbolism of light, but also illusion.
Those who have the dragonfly as a spirit animal may be encouraged to show their true colors more often and shine. Even if they may be more discreet than let’s say the peacock, they often exert a fascinating influence and arouse curiosity in others.
When the dragonfly shows up in your life, it’s perhaps time to look through illusion. A situation or someone’s intentions are not clear and may be deceiving.
Dragonflies and the connection with the spirits of nature
Dragonflies are powerful allies to connect with the spirit of nature. Their fairy-like quality makes them auspicious spirit animals to work with the power of light and fairy realms.

Dragonfly symbolism in the world and ancient traditions
Japan made the dragonfly its national emblem. It is a symbol of joy and rebirth. In some Native American traditions, it is also symbol of the departed souls. For the Mayan, the dragonfly is the emblematic animal of the goddess of creativity, Ix Chel. It is said that the dragonfly’s wings and magical songs revived her after she almost got killed.
Dreaming of Dragonflies
Similar to other spirit animals, the dragonfly is a symbol of transformation and change. They begin their life in the water, but soon transform into the agile flyers that we know them to be. If dragonfly appears in your dreams it may be telling you that a change is coming. If the dragonfly lands on you, it is believed to be a good change. If the dragonfly is dead, it is believed to be a bad change.
Dragonflies are fast, agile and have a short life cycle. If the dragonfly in your dream is moving fast from place to place, it may be a sign to live life fully in the present. Where have you been holding back? What are you waiting for? Do you dare to fly fast and free?

A dragonfly was outside my window for 2 hours today. It was huge and I had to go online to see what it was! After reading about the symbolism, I must say it would be a great gift for your dad. Good luck!
I wanted to ask the forum about a gift for my father. He’ll be 80 in June and he also suffered Lymes disease. He love dragonflies and has one on his altar. Is a drangonflie pendant a nice gift?
I think a dragonfly pendant sounds like a wonderful gift Amy! I’m sure he’d really appreciate it :) That, and maybe a dragonfly necktie clip if they make those.
I have had dragonflied around me my whole life as well, we always seemed drawn to eachother by some unseen, and comforting force.. they will still find me in the most random places, away from water most of the time. One timd I was walking down a crowded city sidewalk in downtown boston during the business lunch hour, and one fell in front of me. Literally, he couldnt fly, and he just fell, in front of me.. it was the biggest, and brownest dragonfly i had ever seen, i think he was real old and on his way to pass on to thr next life, as o believe dragonflies, no, know them to be highly spiritual.i took him to a beautiful flowerpot and placed him safely inside so he could pass in peace <3 they still land on me amongst other not so lucky people, and when i am alone they tend to dance delicate, and intricate aerials above my head. I <3 dragonflies and forever think they are my spirit animal.
beautiful and precious
Good way of explaining, and nice article to take data regarding my presentation focus,
which i am going to convey in university.
Yesterday was the 2nd time a dragonfly has landed on me within the last 4months.Had to of been on my shoulder for at least a few minutes looking at me as I talked to it. It was the same grayish color as the 1st one. I wish I knew why this keeps happening to me. It’s really incredible to be so intouch with nature! Wish I could share the picture I took of it on my shoulder.
I had a dream, thousands of dragon fly surrounded me.I closed My eyes as they were approaching me, and when I opened my eyes, they surrounded me in the air, I wasn’t scared. Big later they flew away one after the other… then I woke up.
I have been going through a very difficult time in all aspects of my life. One particular stressful item in my life is a really big litigation case against my former employer. I have had to find a new attorney, stand up in court on my own, got emotional in front of the judge, really suffered, had many financial struggles and dark moments since loosing my job. BOTH times I was really stressed about facing a crucial time or court date with my case I would see a dragon fly right there in front of me. BOTH times! The first time I was heading to court ON MY OWN with no Attorney scared as heck and right there on my hood right above my seat there was a dragon fly looking right at me. The second time I was at work on the phone stressing about my case starting to go south and right there again a beautiful dragon fly on the bush right in front of me. Only those two days so I took it as a sign that everything was going to work out and that things are going to change for me and they did <3
Thanks Veronica for sharing that story. A huge green dragonfly was outside my window today and I hope it is a sign of encouragement and good things to come!
While driving today I have two mating dragonflies fly into my car. I came to see what dragonflies represent. Love the message and all of your stories.
I have had dragonflies around me since I was 7, I am now 37 and have 2 tattoos of them. They still are around me all the time even though I’m not near water. They will be in the yard or even just fly near my car as I drive. I have been told that I have very strong spiritual energy and that I am able to use that energy for good but I just dont know how. I know I have a connection to these beautiful dragonflies I just cant figure out how.
Disregard previous message.
The dragon totem is indeed powerful, but I question it’s usage. It seems to take me to very dark places, as if it gives the person experiencing the usage the illusion or state of being the extreme opposite of what’s desired, then it subliminally whips back. Such has indeed made me contemplate relocation (though I don’t the resources for such), social aid, and even death.
My friend’s husband was a police officer killed in the line of duty. He was 26 y/o. He left behind a little girl 4,and a little boy 3. On the first Father’s Day after his death, the kids and his wife spent the day at the pool with us. A HUGE yellow and neon green dragonfly sat right on the patio table directly in front of his wife. It sat there long enough for ALL 10 of us to wonder WT?
All of the sudden I had an overwhelming feeling that Brad was there, and he wanted to be sure that they knew it.I told Cindy that he was that dragonfly.. Not ONE person at that table disagreed. It was an amazing moment of peace for a family that paid the ultimate sacrifice.
