Cat Spirit Animal
Cat Symbolism
The cat carries many meanings revolving around the balance between seemingly opposites, such as inner and outer, action and rest, light and dark. It’s strongly symbolic of the connection with what usually hides in darkness or the unknown. The cat generally represents:
- Patience, waiting for the right moment to act
- Independence, yet enjoying social connections
- Spirit of adventure, courage
- Deep, relaxed connection with self
- Healing from the inside out
- Curiosity, exploration of the unknown or the unconscious
Let’s remember that the cat as we know it today mostly as a domestic animal was not a common animal for the American Indians. It was introduced by the European settlers and therefore is not part of the original totemic traditions. Nevertheless, cat symbolism has pervaded many ancient and modern cultures around the world. One of the most well-known is the worship of the cat in ancient Egypt. Nowadays, the cat is often part of our ordinary life and an inspiring animal totem for many of us.
“Cats, as you know, are quite impervious to threats.”

Cats and exploration of the unknown
Cats tend to be active at night and are able to see in the dark thanks to their highly adaptable eyes. Because they can be seen roaming around at night, they are associated in several cultures with the realm of the darkness. By extension, the cat has been considered as a symbol or representative of witchcraft and dark magic arts, especially if its color is black!
Another way to see the meaning of the cat as a spirit animal or totem is to pay attention to its ability to see in the dark and be at ease when most other animals and humans are not. If the cat shows up in your life as a spirit guide or you have this animal as totem, you may be inclined to start exploring areas in your life or aspects or yourself that you do not know well yet.

You may be called to bring more balance between your social life, whether it’s in your family, work or school, and time alone. The cat spirit animal could also encourage you to find a way of exploring your inner truths, as well as mystical truths, without sacrificing the connections you have with the rest of your environment.
Dreaming About Cats
Dreams are our subconscious minds communicating to us using the language of symbols. While some traditions think that a dream of a cat is a bad omen, this meaning is loosing favor in our more modern times. Dreams of cats have more often come to symbolize your feminine essence and sensuality. Dreams about cats may also be a message to tap into your inner mischievous and mysterious nature. A black cat in your dreams may be telling you to pay attention to your intuition. As far back as the ancient Egyptians and possibly farther, cats have been believed to be able to travel between dimensions. Is there a message from another dimension here for you?

I personally am a very spiritual person and have many encounters with spirits, and other beings not from this dimension or world.Every time I have encountered a black cat it has been validation for a feeling I was experiencing or a strange happening. For instance, my friends and I walked around a cemetery one night just out of boredom and curiosity, and on our walk back to my car, two black cats followed us the entire way. They were friendly and let us pet them. I have not seen the cats since and just recently revisited the same cemetery. I have many times have strange encounters like this one. I hope this helps some of you weary or wandering if what you feel is valid. It is. Trust your intuition. Luck, light, love..xoxo
A black kitten has arrived out of nowhere at my doorstep and I couldn’t turn it away. Am looking for a home but the way it came and listens when I talk have very mixed feeling! Feel its a message
The kitty found you for a reason, I think you should keep her if you can because she will bring you great joy and tons of laughter and smiles.
Hi, so I am new to this whole thing of spirit animals. I was googling a concern I have and came across this forum in regards to what I am experiencing. Okay, within the last 4 months I have been experiencing what is cat eyes every time I close my eyes in darkness. There are times I just blink and I usually jump because it does starled me I see them like I am one with cat. What can this be?
I have had the same experience and that’s how I landed in this page- from Google search regarding the cat eyes. I sometimes open my eyes in the dark (from waking or blinking) and clearly see cat eyes…after a few times I started to think that maybe it’s a message from (?)…It made me a little nervous when it first happened. Only happens in the dark- pitch black…I see the eyes a green color…through my own eyes- almost like they are my own, but I’m looking directly into them.
I was just cleaning up in my bedroom and all of a sudden I heard a very distinct friendly cat meow. I do not own any cats but My father did when I was an infant. I’ve always loved cats, and they often followed me home and would not leave until I took them back to their owner. When I first heard the noise I was startled but then I became at ease when I realized it could be my spirit animal. Has anybody else experienced hearing their spirit animal?
One night, right after my parents arrived at home, I was alone in the living room playing with my phone when suddenly a black cat appeared out of nowhere.. I freaked out and I think the cat sensed it so she ran away through the main door.. Crazy, tho it wasn’t my first odd encounter with the feline. Then I decided to adopt a cat and I’ve been doing well in life
A couple months ago, I was sitting outside, and I felt the weird urge to close my eyes for a couple minutes. I opened my eyes after five minutes to see a black cat about five feet away from me, just staring at me. We just stared for a good fifteen minutes, and then it ran away soundlessly. I never saw that cat again. Does anybody know what this means?
I wish I knew what it meant. The same thing happened to me kinda. I just arrived to my apt. and I decided to go through the backdoor. I was already almost at the door when I noticed a grey and white cat Just sitting on it’s bum ever so daintily. I was startled because it was in the dark, I stoped dead in my tracks and found it strange that the thing wouldn’t move! It stayed perfectly still and stared me directly in the eyes and kept meowing every 5 seconds. I wasn’t scared, but I was weary. So after A few mins i turned around and went in the front door instead. I went upstairs and as soon as i did I dropped my bags and had the urge to go bk downstairs, which I did… But the Cat was gone! What do I make of this help!
I sometimes feel this, as well. Perhaps they are our spirit animals?
I for one am going to try asking next time it occurs. Could prove interesting, and potentially informing. Maybe you all should try and ask, as well? :3
I sometimes ask for cats to appear an since they’re always around somewhere I can find one every time if I set the intention.
I just got off work and I am sitting outside alone and smoking a much needed cigarette and a small black cat peeked around the corner at me and since I work in a kitchen, I wanted to give it some hamburger meat I was taking home, well I tried to follow the cat and it seemed feral and not accustomed to people, it ran close to the highway and a large doe freaked it out and it ran the doe continued to stand there and stare at e
Hi,I do not own a cat but one appeared in my tv room and went into the dining room and I could not find this cat anywhere in my home. There are nights that I feel a small animal walking around my legs on top of my blanket but I can’t see anything. Why did I see this cat ? It was black and grey striped. Sincerely, Donna
I too have felt a spirit animal on my bed at night, I feel like it was a cat, and I felt like it was protecting me, from what, I have no idea
I’ve also felt this. Sometimes I will see cats out of the corner of my eye then I’ll realize there’s nothing there and I’ll often feel a cat curling up to me at night.
I have too seen a cat a ginger one since I was little, if it’s just your spirit animal, then it’s doing its job and protecting you. Don’t be afraid of it just feel at ease when you can feel it around, if you want I would look into more spiritual meanings and really understand why and how.
I keep having dreams about being lost in the forest but then a little munchkin cat and a bobcat led me home well I came into an encounter with a bobcat one almost attacked my dog and another one was in our backyard and I was wondering if my spirit animal is a cat does that count wild cats to like Bobcats any answers would be apprecited
