Cat Spirit Animal
Cat Symbolism
The cat carries many meanings revolving around the balance between seemingly opposites, such as inner and outer, action and rest, light and dark. It’s strongly symbolic of the connection with what usually hides in darkness or the unknown. The cat generally represents:
- Patience, waiting for the right moment to act
- Independence, yet enjoying social connections
- Spirit of adventure, courage
- Deep, relaxed connection with self
- Healing from the inside out
- Curiosity, exploration of the unknown or the unconscious
Let’s remember that the cat as we know it today mostly as a domestic animal was not a common animal for the American Indians. It was introduced by the European settlers and therefore is not part of the original totemic traditions. Nevertheless, cat symbolism has pervaded many ancient and modern cultures around the world. One of the most well-known is the worship of the cat in ancient Egypt. Nowadays, the cat is often part of our ordinary life and an inspiring animal totem for many of us.
“Cats, as you know, are quite impervious to threats.”

Cats and exploration of the unknown
Cats tend to be active at night and are able to see in the dark thanks to their highly adaptable eyes. Because they can be seen roaming around at night, they are associated in several cultures with the realm of the darkness. By extension, the cat has been considered as a symbol or representative of witchcraft and dark magic arts, especially if its color is black!
Another way to see the meaning of the cat as a spirit animal or totem is to pay attention to its ability to see in the dark and be at ease when most other animals and humans are not. If the cat shows up in your life as a spirit guide or you have this animal as totem, you may be inclined to start exploring areas in your life or aspects or yourself that you do not know well yet.

Cat totem wisdom: Acting when the time is right
The cat spirit animal is a good helper for those who need to find the courage to tackle lingering problems or concerns. The cat is known for being a great hunter using not just force, but a refined sense of timing in the moment of the attack. It seems to follow its prey and be able to patiently wait and position itself until it catches it.
By affinity with this feline, those who have the cat as a spirit animal may be able to tackle issues with patience, confidence, and a good sense of timing in their actions. The wisdom of the cat totem lies in the ability to remain quiet, observe, and then act when the time is right, so you’re better positioned to reach your goal and preserve your energy even in moments of tension and action.
Attributes of the cat spirit animal: Agility and flexibility
When we observe cats, we see that they are characterized by the flexibility and agility. No matter the circumstances, it will always manage to fall back on its feet. By affinity with the cat totem, you may be encouraged to develop your flexibility at many different levels, whether it is in your physical body, mind, emotions, or spirit.
The cat totem is a source of inspiration to renew your perspective and have the courage to act or integrate it into your life. If the cat spirit animal shows up in your life, it may be time to explore new ways to look at things.
The cat totem: A call for independence
The cat is emblematic of a lifestyle that combines times of fierce independence and moments that are more social and cuddly. Being inspired by the cat’s spirit, you may foster the balance between your personal need for freedom and time alone with the company of others and social activities.
You may be called to bring more balance between your social life, whether it’s in your family, work or school, and time alone. The cat spirit animal could also encourage you to find a way of exploring your inner truths, as well as mystical truths, without sacrificing the connections you have with the rest of your environment.
Dreaming About Cats
Dreams are our subconscious minds communicating to us using the language of symbols. While some traditions think that a dream of a cat is a bad omen, this meaning is loosing favor in our more modern times. Dreams of cats have more often come to symbolize your feminine essence and sensuality. Dreams about cats may also be a message to tap into your inner mischievous and mysterious nature. A black cat in your dreams may be telling you to pay attention to your intuition. As far back as the ancient Egyptians and possibly farther, cats have been believed to be able to travel between dimensions. Is there a message from another dimension here for you?

I see a white cat out of the corner of my eye a lot, No one else sees it and they think im crazy!
Those are called floaters that happen in the eyes. I see black spots all the time, and some white spots in the corner of my vision. They’re called floaters, and that’s what you have. No cat in sight, obviously.
I think the cat is my spirit animal because one night I was in my garage and I looked out the window and I saw a cat a black tall skinny cat with orange or green eyes he looked at me and disappears into the bushes. I ran outside to check the bushes but when I looked the cat seemed like he disappeared. And I never saw that cat again.
Seriously? I have cats do this all the time, and it’s quite annoying hearing a cat go through your garbage in the middle of the night. The reason why it disappeared is because it’s obviously a stray, and you spooked it. No higher power working here. Let’s not forget that outside cats only live a few years, so chances are that cat’s dead and you obviously won’t be seeing it again.
HEY I AM TEN WHY WOULD YOU BE INSULTING ME LIKE THAT
Annoyed lacks the common courtesy humans SHOULD posses for each other. They also lack the use of restraint on their thoughts vs. what others believe. You must excuse such people and let karma come as it may, you only give them power when you react to such foolishness. Hold your connections to animals close to you, they don’t lie, insult or even hate.
I believe that the cat is my spirit animal because whenever I’m walking around my neighborhood, or riding in a vehicle around town, I see a cat staring at me. It would just sit there, and stare at me as I passed. It’s always a different cat, but it’s always a cat.
That awkward moment when I don’t believe in any of this, and cats in my neighborhood do the exact same thing. Don’t think you’re special because cats stare at you. Cats tend to do that on an everyday basis.
Annoyed,
You are clearly a bully and have low self esteem. Stay off this site if you do not believe in spirit animals.
Ha, take her advice Annoyed. Your quite, forgive the bad pun, annoying.

I had an unusual experience last night in that while sleeping I felt the bed move like when my cat use to jump up on the bed. I then felt him walk the length of my body up toward my head and could even hear a slight purr. Peanut was an indoor/outdoor cat and we haven’t seen him in almost a year, so I am figuring he died. At first I thought it was just my imagination having awoken from sleep or maybe a cat had gotten into the house so I sat up and checked the bed and nothing there. I then lay there and felt the bed move and same thing. This happened a total of 3 times. At first I felt a bit anxious, but then a sort of comfort settled over me and I went back to sleep. Curious if anyone else has had this happen to them; also curious to see if it happens again tonight. Perhaps it is a sign and the cat is my totem spirit now.
Yes, I just commented my weird experience. Take a look! Haha I have no idea what the heck is going on with me.I’m not scared though at least.

A cat that I took care of for the winter died after I set it back loose in the summer, I feel so bad for that I told myself that for the winter because it was so cold, and then release it when the weather turned acceptable….. this was a stray cat, well I released it back and it was ran over :'( and now there’s another cat at my door who ALMOST got ran over by a car and it’s freezing outside …my heart is mush but I fear if I care for it, then it too will pass on and I can’t deal with that, I adopt cats and most stray cats don’t want to be inside, but the four I adopted are all happy as larks, why do these little stray cats come to me…. I can’t deny it I want to go and pick up some warm housing for them etc, but what if I get attached??? It just climbed up the stairs never been here before, walked right up to me and hopped up in my arms purred and licked me…… I’m so mush it ain’t fair :(
Isn’t it better that they know real love and kindness, even if their life is short; or lost, alone, scared, and hungry for many years. Yes, I know how bad it hurts and have told myself I’d never go through that again. They come to us for reasons, even if we don’t understand. I use to rescue and re-home dogs. I couldn’t afford to do it anymore. I still have one of them though, my husband wanted to get her and we’d find her a home… almost 15 years later, it’s time to let her go. Almost half of my life; she’s been there through most of the worst times of my life. She would’ve died 15 years ago if we hadn’t taken her.
Sky, I only had for 9 months before she passed, they never figured out what was wrong. She had another seizure and woke up one last time, long enough to stumble over and lay her head on my lap. In such a short time, she was the one who made the biggest impact on my heart. I’ve only felt love like that for one other, my daughter. In just a short time she altered my entire life.
I know by now you already have the kitty and you couldn’t resist, and you shouldn’t. Even though it’s so painful to lose them, all the love and memories are worth every tear.
Lots of love
Cats have always been attracted to me. Sick cats, stray cats, needy cats. I see one wandering around & they come to me.
I have always had some sort of bond with certain animals, cats being one of them. I just recently got a cat named Ivy from my friend and strangely enough, Ivy didn’t even so much as scratch me when my friend gave her to me and I took her home, all she did was sit in my lap and purr. Considering the fact that Ivy seemed to dislike humans when my friend had her, and when I got her she wouldn’t even hiss at me, she would just sit on my lap all the time and purr. Then my friend recently found two kittens outside her house that weren’t even a month old yet outside her house that her Pit Bull had carried into the yard unharmed, a vanilla one and a full black one, presumably from the same litter. The vanilla one absolutely hated everyone but when I would pick her up she wouldn’t hiss or scratch or bite, even though she is too young to purr, she made noises indicating that she was attempting to purr. The black one did the same but she was more affectionate. There are a lot of full grown cats in my neighborhood as well, and once I was out lying in the grass in the field in front of my house where a house used to be and the two violent cats from up the road came up to me and sat on my stomach while I was petting them. I don’t actually know if the cat is my spirit animal, but I think I might have a strong bonds with cats in particular. I have bonds with other domestic animals as well but none like the cat.
Earlier this year I saw a stray cat and went to touch it but it looked at me and gave a soft “meow” as if to say don’t. It kept its eye on me and passed me and then meowed again before disappearing behind a fence.
Last night I had a dream where I was trying to help a lost dog who ran away down a path opposite the one where I saw his master. From that very same path came a cat. She told me to not touch her initially, but she let me see her collar. It said she belonged to Cho.
She told me her name was Henrietta. She said I was allowed to pick her up and take her home with me. So I did. Nobody else in the dream heard her but me. They laughed because I was talking to a cat. I am sure this is my animal guide.
Dear sir, (or ma’am)
You have had a remarkable encounter with my kind. You see, us cats only choose to be heard, touched, or seen only when they want to. Treat my brethren well, and we shall repay you handsomely. Should you do the opposite….
I’ve actually seen my totem before. Mine is a black cat with yellow eyes. I caught it in a photo.
how?
Funny, I have ALWAYS loved cats and NEVER had any experiences like that. I do sometimes feel like something is watching me, though. I do sometimes hear purring at night, but I always disregard it, since I think that it is my own cat, Spottedleaf. I read Warriors, but nothing else. Nothing happens often, just the fact that I love cats. I think that I am similar too the crow/raven, but I don’t know.
I’ve had cats all my life, since the age of 10. For sure I’m the cat lady on the block..I’ve had at least 40 in my life time. Animals belong outside yes even cats.
