By Elena Harris, SpiritAnimal.info Editor

Shamanism may bring to mind images of brightly painted witch doctors or dark-cloaked druids. The truth is that shamanism is a collection of ancient healing traditions that are embraced by millions around the world. For those who fully embrace the shamanistic teachings, it is a way of life. This practice is a process where mankind can connect with nature and all creation in a very personal and intimate way.

What is This Shamanism Thing Anyways?

The term shamanism is most commonly used when someone is trying to describe the ancient spiritual practices of ancient and indigenous people around the world. Over recent decades, the term “shamanism” has been popularized much farther into the western world, particularly within many of the new-age teachings. It is still practiced in its more traditional form today in the eastern countries where the majority of shamanistic teachings are believed to have originated.

The easiest way to define shamanism may be to think of this practice as the universal spiritual wisdom that is inherent to native peoples and tribes around the world and that is practiced by those who have a deep connection to nature and the planet. As all ancient spiritual practices are rooted in nature, therefore, shamanism is the method where humans can connect to nature in a deeper and more meaningful and impactful way.

Traditional Shamanism vs. Modern or New-Age Shamanic Practices

Today, it can be challenging to differentiate between traditional forms of shamanism and modernized forms of the practice that have been inspired by or that draw some points of inspiration from shamanism.

Where is Shamanism Practiced?

Evidence of shamanic practices has been discovered all around the globe. Archaeologists and philanthropists have seen signs of these practices in Scandinavia, Siberia, and other parts of Europe. It is also widely documented in regions throughout Asia including Mongolia, Korea, Japan, and China. Shamanistic roots have even been uncovered in Australian aboriginal tribes that still live there today. Inuit and First Nations tribes of North America also have practices closely related to Eastern Shamanism and it can also be seen in regions throughout South America, Mesoamerica, and even parts of Africa. In other words, it’s been found throughout most of the known world.

Today, many who identify themselves as Pagans also follow an assorted combination of practices that end up being something of a Neo-shamanism form of the ancient practice. It often involves the use of totem or relying on spirit animals, the use of focused dream journeys or the famous vision quests, it may make use of trance meditations and some even practice what is known as astral projection or travel.

It’s important to note that while these Neo-shamanism practices are similar much of this “modern Shamanism” is not the same as the shamanic practices that indigenous people around the world practice today. The reason for this is simple: true shamanism is based on centuries of culture and tradition passed down through families and tribes, something that truly only exists in the native cultures around the world. This is not to say modern Shamanism is fake or not real, it is just different and it is important to note there is a difference between the two when talking about this topic.

Key Aspects of Shamanism

For the most part, indigenous shamanistic rituals are very important to the practice. There are five key points that make up the foundation of this practice:

Connection with nature

Shamanism comes from a love and reverent focus on nature itself. Shamanic practices use the power of Mother Earth and takes that energy that nature can provide to help improve and better life for all. The teachings of ancient cultures come from basic laws and truths of nature itself.

Healing of self and community

Shamanism is used to help improve not just the health of any individual practitioner, but also the wellbeing of the community as a whole. This includes all animals, plants, people, and all of life. There is a connectedness between everyone and everything that exists on the planet.

Spiritual practice

Regular spiritual practice, meditation, and mental cleaning is an important part of the shamanistic way. This spiritual focus allows for the sustained and full growth of both the person’s mind and soul, with the goal of creating peace and harmony inside and outside.

Pilgrimage to sacred places

Learning the locations of sacred places and how to properly approach and connect with these important places is an essential aspect of shamanism. Many sacred places are natural locations such as lakes, woods, mountains, rivers, and caves where natural energy can be tapped into.

Vision and ceremony

Ceremonies are also important as they are a way for practitioners to honor the spirits of nature and of their ancestors. These ceremonies are held in order to help promote harmony and balance. A true shaman’s journey never ends as it is a lifelong path that must be walked.

How do You Become a Shaman?

Anyone with the right heart and mind can follow the shamanistic rituals and practices, but not everyone can be a shaman as that is a title of great honor and respect and it a title that is hard to come by. Shamans are local leaders who are blessed by nature to see how life and everything in and around it are interconnected. Around the world, shamans can be called by many names, such as sorcerer, healer, medicine man/woman, a priest, dream walker, traveler of worlds, transformer, a witch doctor, a seer, and the list goes on and on.

Every culture has its own special name for these special individuals. Shamans may inherit the role as it can be passed down through family lines, they may be deemed touched by the gods because they survive an accident or major disease, some individuals can display special talents when they are still a child, or someone may simply get training themselves to see if they are worthy of the title.

Men are the predominant gender for shamans though the role can also be taken on by women who either have never been able to have children or who have already raised children of their own. Generally, it is a long process to become a shaman and can take years if not a decade or more of hard training, trials, tests, and struggles. Not everyone who seeks the training succeeds and ends up earning the title of shaman. In fact, the majority of people will die in the process of trying to reach this enlightened state of being.

Reflections on Shamanism’s Role in Modern Life

Shamans are generally seen as very important and high functioning people within their community. They are highly respected and ae regarded as being- mentors and consultants, dedicated to healing, and tending to the physical and spiritual needs of their community. They are also known for their skills at tapping into the natural forces and power of the planet, which gives them powers of manipulating reality, prophesying, divining, forecasting, and connecting to spirits. They can enter deep trances, speak in tongues, access the spiritual world, and project their consciousness to other times and places.

Shamans know how, where, and when to access power and information from nature and can communicate with all living things and all things connected to the earth. They are excellent problem solvers, doctors, counselors, psychologists, storytellers, healers, teachers, communicators, and hypnotists. They are highly respected and revered as leaders and teachers, which is why the practice of shamanism is growing and still thriving today.
