The Dolphin Spirit Animal

Dophin Spirit Animal

By Elena Harris, Editor

The dolphin spirit animal represents harmony and balance. Dolphins are both highly intelligent and closely in tune with their instincts, striking a balance between the two states. Dolphins are also a symbol of protection and of resurrection. Their playful nature is a reminder that everyone needs to approach life with humor and joy. People who identify with the dolphin totem are usually peaceful and gentle, but with a deep inner strength.

Dolphin Symbolism

The dolphin is a complex animal and has had many different meanings attached to it throughout history, including:

  • Peace and harmony
  • Protection
  • Playfulness and joy
  • Resurrection
  • Inner Strength
  • Cooperation

Dolphins as Representatives of Peace and Harmony

Dolphins balance their animal nature with a higher intelligence. They trust their instincts and intuition rather than overthinking things. They live peacefully with other species, including humans. It isn’t uncommon for dolphins to swim and play around swimmers and boats. Their gentle natures remind us to look for the good in everyone and strive to bring peace to our lives and those around us.

Dolphins as a Symbols of Protection

Sailors have long believed that dolphins are a good omen. Dolphins have been known to assist drowning people and to chase sharks away from people in the water. In one notable case, a pod of whales was beached in New Zealand. People were fighting to keep them alive but the whales were disoriented. A nearby pod of dolphins came over and herded the whales back to sea, saving their lives. Due to this tendency, dolphins have a well-earned reputation as protectors. They teach us to not only save ourselves, but to protect others in need.

Dolphin Spirit Animal

The Playful Spirit of the Dolphin

People are often attracted to the dolphin power animal because of their playfulness. They are a reminder to keep a sense of humor about our lives. The dolphin spirit animal shows that everyone needs to play sometimes for the sheer joy of it. They remind us to take some time out of our busy lives to experience life like a child does.

Dolphins as a Symbol of Resurrection

Dolphins have long been linked to resurrection. The ancient Greeks believed that they carried the souls of the dead to the afterlife. In Christian artwork, the dolphin is often portrayed as carrying souls to Christ so they can be born anew. People who are attracted to the dolphin spirit animal may find themselves on the cusp of a spiritual and personal rebirth, or may have undergone one recently.

Dolphins, a Power Animal Symbolic of Inner Strength

Dolphins in the wild are strong and fearless. When sharks or orcas threaten them, they don’t hesitate to fight instead of trying to flee. They represent strong moral convictions and self-confidence, reminding us to speak our minds and stand our ground rather than hide our true selves.

Dolphins as a Symbol of Cooperation

Dolphins live in large cooperative social groups. Healthy adults work to protect and feed injured ones, and the whole pod rallies around mothers and their calves to protect them from predators. They demonstrate a level of selflessness and cooperation that most people struggle to achieve. The dolphin totem shows that coming from a place of love makes it easy to work with others without sacrificing our own needs.

Dreaming About Dolphins

Dolphins are extremely intelligent and symbolize multidimensional wisdom and intelligence. In addition dolphins can be rather playful, so a dream with a dolphin may symbolize a connection with your joyous and playful side.

Social animals, dolphins are also symbols of connection. So if a dolphin shows up in your dreams, it may be a symbol that you are relating well with others or that you will soon be in a social situation. Associated with connection it could also be a symbol of deepening a connection with a loved one or significant other.

Another aspect of a dolphin dream is the quality of the water the dolphin is in. Is the water clean and clear? This may indicate great relationships and socializing. Is the water dark and murky? This could be a sign of some difficult relations with friends or coworkers.

When I was drinking ayahuasca in Peru we had a ceremony with intentions involving spirit animals. The thought of dolphins popped into my mind though I generally accept my totem as crows.

I thought well fair enough the shaman is Peruvian and can only sing what they know and the amazon has dolphins and it makes sense, I love the ocean.

It brought to mind this memory,

Once I was going through a hard time and walked along a beach near my home town. at 7am as I was near the end of the pier an entire herd of dolphins appeared. This was not a place where dolphins where known to be spotted. I excitedly called out to a man who was walking his dog. He looked at me like I was bonkers but it was one of the most beautiful things I have seen*.

My totem is a dolphin, not a surprise because I am a cancer. My first time living on my own, I had a job at sea world, my bus would drop me off early and I had about an hour to kill before work and the park opened for the day. At first I would walk around the park watching the animals. As I approached the dolphin enclosure, they started jumping and standing out of the water and calling to get my attention, they did, I went as close as I could to the pool both swam away and came back with a ball and tossed it to me. I went and picked it up and tossed it back, they swam, got it and tossed it to me again. I was playing catch with the dolphins. Every morning, I got off the bus ran to the dolphin enclosure, they were waiting for me, when they saw me they swam, got the ball and the game of catch went on till I had to leave for work. This was a happy but lonely time in my life, how appropriate dolphins would beckon me to come play.

I was told the turtle was my animal totem, however I’ve had quite a few dreams with a dolphin appearing to reassure me about things. The dolphin description really resonates with me so I’m thinking I’m probably one!

Can we find our animal spirit by our birth date?

    • sam i am blue eggs and spam September 8, 2014 at 12:12 am - Reply

The shortest answer: no. slightly longer answer: there are No Limits, and yet much better ways. alright here it goes: astrology offers many gifts– it is a snapshot of the cosmos that we carry with us like fingerprints. and in this sort of code, we can find hints as to the individual’s destiny, their challenges, etc. which of course will also be related to what sort of spirit guides or powerful beings this individual attracts in this lifetime. anything in a person’s life can tell them– “thats the one”. the more open someone is, the easier the process goes of opening up a relationship between a person and any helper spirits/animals. if you want to search for an animal spirit that is there by your side, there are many ways. you can ask a tree what it’s got to say. journey work. just plain watching for signs. but i wouldn’t directly call upon my birth date for such insights. best wishes xo

It’s beautiful! I especially love the detail of how the mobile pocket buttons to the handles. :)And an update on how the Twins tote is doing on this side of the Atlantic: it had a nasty run-in with a brand-new green Zara cardigan last week, as the cardigan decided to run on its first wearing and leave green all over my top and the tote, ugh! Luckily I managed to save the bag, only a tiny bit of green remains on the handle, so faint as to be uncltineaboe unless one knew to look for it. And of course it badly needed a bath anyway, I just kept putting it off out of laziness. 🙂

no. i found my spirit animal because I was told. its more about personality and the animal that represents your soul the best. there are online quizzes, but those are crap and dont work as well.

A totem/spirit animal may come to you through meditation. You might try a guided one (either live or pre-recorded), but if you’re new to this sort of thing, seek a mentor or shaman. If your dreams seem to reveal relevant things to you, your intuition may help you find your spirit animal–though you may have more than one, either at the same time or through the course of your life–but remember that your dreams may simply be a relaxed mind’s miscellaneous doodles. While elements of your traditional Roman zodiac might resonate with you for some reason, I wouldn’t put much faith into any alleged totem-animal calculations, especially if you’re new to this sort of spiritual guidance! I haven’t tried any quizzes, but like Sam I Am, I personally doubt they’re of much help–the ones I’ve glimpsed simply tally up your conscious preferences–not examining your deeper self–and don’t account for the complexity of life and individuals, but put things into an either/or choice and very simplistic framework.

Correction: “Anonymous” was the poster who specifically said that online quizzes are crap, though I still agree with both him/her and Sam I am. Sorry for the incorrect “citation.”

Good wishes to you on your journey.

      Hello sibling!
It is s nice to find another who will live their life by the code of the dolphin.
To be a true dolphinite, you must abide by the following code of conduct:
Perhaps one of the most vital parts of the code, speaking dolphanese will enable you to communicate with not only fellow dolphin pods, but also your inner dolphin self.
If you are not peaceful with your dolphin brethren, they will sense inner strife, and will exclude you from their pod of harmony
Any other color offends and wards off your newly found dolphin brethren. Especially red and/or mauve(the color of our mortal enemies the alpacas). It reminds them of the long forgotten Death War of the Spirits.
You have been called to this destiny. It is a great, highly-sought-after honor. Be proud of your dolphin heritage. It is a true blessing.

That’s about it! If you have any questions just reply to this comment:)
      Welcome to the family <3

Wow! Though even though my spirit animal is a tiger, dolphins are my favorite animal, my favorite color is ocean blue, AND I’m also a bit playful as well! Can I actually bond with dolphins well, even if my spiritual animal is a tiger? Oh my goodness, I’m so amazed and inspired now that I’ve your comment here now! ✧0✧
