Hawk symbolism in ancient traditions
In numerous traditions, the hawk has a strong relationship with the world of the gods. Some of this symbolism has persisted in modern mythology and beliefs. In Ancient Egypt, the belief was that a hawk-headed spirit called “ba” would fly off a mummy to come back among the living as a hawk or swallow. The hawk symbolized a part of the soul that would be freed up after death and come back to the world of the living in the shape of a bird. It was also the animal of choice for the god Horus, god of the sky, who was represented with a hieroglyph depicting a falcon or hawk.
The popular belief in more modern times that birds like hawks or owls are announcer of death may be rooted in this myth. For the Greeks, the hawk and the eagle were associated with the god Jupiter, king of the gods. The bird is strongly connected with the realm of the gods.

As the hawk glides through the air high in the sky, it reminds you to see things from a higher perspective. Can you connect to the magic of life? Are you accessing your intuition?
The hawk is also a symbol of leadership. It was believed that if you followed the hawk, you would be traveling on the right path.

I was the writer of the previous posting. My name is Ron…
A few years ago I had a wonderful experience with a hawk. Upon leaving my kayak and putting it on my roof rack I saw a hawk perched on my roof rack. It did not move from that perch even when I put my kayak on the roof rack. Even as I began to put straps on my boat it still remained there. AS I drove away the hawk remained on my cars roof. I went to get gas for my car some 8 miles away. I looked on my car’s roof and the hawk was now inside my kayak peering out at me. I then traveled some 15 miles home and the hawk was still in my boat and upon arriving at my residence the hawk emerged from my kayak’s interior seat it came out and once again hopped onto the kayak’s exterior. I took several photos. The hawk remained at this position for many hours. Upon coming out around midnight the hawk was still perched. During the night The hawk had taken off. Truly an amazing experience!
Last week, my mother and I went walking at Euclid Creek. We saw a hawk perched on a branch. It told me a message about focusing on my Algebra test.
@ Nicole,
I read your post with great interest as I have been struggling with the exact things you mentioned: loss of a childhood friend, my second grandfather recently passed, ptsd and anxiety due to getting out of a bad relationship–all of them. And my encounters with red tailed hawks are also very similar to what you described, uncannily so. (I also posted as Anonymous July 23 a little down the page here).
When I wrote that these hawks are noble and that their screeching cry is the sound of freedom and the will to live, I meant specifically that it is the exact sound of being fiercely stubborn in the face of great suffering and deep loss; a shriek of despair and hurt fused with a scream of hope and joy and determination to live on despite the hardships. It’s the sound of defiance and power during or after a difficult time in a challenging world.
Or, for lack of originality, their call is the sound of “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”.
Thanks, everyone, for sharing.
I just walk outside and was speaking with my mother in law who is very sick. Four red tail were flying around. I have seen one, but never four together. Wow! They were so majestic! I hope it means good news and not bad news, I believe it does! God Bless
I HAVE MOVED INTO MY NEW PLACE IN NKC WITH MY FAMILY ABOUT 6 MONTHS NOW. I KEEP SEEING THIS BIG BEAUTIFUL BROWN AND WHITE HAWK THAT I’VE NEVER SEEN IN MY LIFE TIL I MOVED MY FAMILY IN THIS NICE AREA UP NORTH. I’VE SEEN IT NOT JUST ONCE, BUT SEEN IT MULTIPLE TIMES PROBABLY LIKE 8 TIMES SINCE WE MOVED IN THE NORTHLAND. SEEN IT LIKE 7 TIMES OFF THE HIGHWAY WHILE IM OUT RUNNING ERRANDS ON MY DAY OFF OR ON MY WAY TO WORK AND IM THE ONLY ONE THAT EVER SEES THIS BIRD EXCEPT ONE DAY AT WORK (ABOUT 5 MILES DOWN THE HWY FROM MY PLACE) SURE AS HECK LOOKED LIKE THE SAME BIRD I KEEP SEEING DIDNT MENTION IT TO ANY OF MY CO-WORKERS CUZ I DIDNT WANT NOBODY THINKING IM CRAZY OR MAKING UP STORIES BUT I WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT NOTICED IT TIL I SAID IT OUT LOUD LIKE HEY “LOOK AT THAT BIG BIRD HANGING ON OUR PARKING LOT LIGHT” I DIDNT EVEN KNOW IT WAS A HAWK TIL I TOLD THE CUSTOMERS/CO-WORKERS WHO WERE THERE. I WONDER IF IT IS GOD COMMUNICATING WITH ME LIKE THESE STORIES I KEEP READING ABOUT PEOPLE SEEING THESE HAWKS? BECAUSE I HAVE LIVED A REALLY ROUGH LIFE. IM GETTING A GOOD VIBE OFF THIS BIRD WHICH IS A GOOD THING. I BET ITS GOD REMINDING ME THAT HE’S THE REASON IM STILL HERE AFTER BEING SHOT MORE THEN 10XS AT ONCE AND BEING BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE I HAVE TURNED MY LIFE AROUND AND DOING RIGHT BY MY FAMILY AND LIVING STRAIGHT NOW ITS BEEN 3 YRS SINCE I BEEN OUT THE HOSPITAL AND TRYING TO STAY AWAY FROM THE NEGATIVE THINGS IN LIFE. I BELIEVE IT IS GOD TRYING TO COMMUNICATE WITH ME AND TELLING ME HE’S WATCHING BECAUSE I AM GOING FROM NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE!!!!! FEEL FREE TO REPLY PEOPLE WHO CAN RELATE OR WHOEVER WOULD LIKE TO SHARE!!!!
Your story is inspiring. I’m glad that you are doing better in your life! I saw a hawk today like three times ( I think the same one) while I was riding in a car with a friend. I am also in a place of experience a lot of changes in my life. I know the hawk is appearing in my life to let me know to stay focus on my goals and to not make hasty decisions. I’ve also been having a lot of dreams that have very clear messages in them for me to act on. I am seeking more freedom and trying to take more risks (good ones) in my life. I hope all things work out for you.
@Nichole-you are not alone in feeling this way. My children and I have always been connected to nature in some way wet live in a city where strange animals and strays always seem to come to our yard. So of course we either watch them or rescue them. We love taking road trips and I’m usually the only one who notices the hawks perched on the trees or wires on the sides of the roads. A year ago I started having seizures and our world got turned upside down. I had to close my home daycare business of 7 years this past Feb. Now I have no way of supporting my 4 girls. It’s been a tough year. My girls have been arguing allot lately, I’ve realized I probably was depressed about everything that happened so I started seeing a therapist. I had always been very independent. Actually before my seizures, so it’s tough for me to rely on everyone else even though I know that is what is expected of me. I was out doing homeless ministry. And now thankfully we have a program that’s keeps us off of the street called section 8, but I hope to be back out doing that ministry again taking to people finding out why they are on the streets, helping them get off. I’ve also been dating a great man that is helpful with my girls but it’s in the air force, he got orders to leave for Korea in Sept. for a year and then stationed in Germany after. Well, last night at our family bed time prayers, I asked that everything just to be made more clear. I don’t understand why I have to be so sick, there is no-one to help take care of my girls when I’m on my medications, there is no income, but I know there is a purpose, there is a testimony out of this. I believe everything happens for a reason. My child hood best friend just told me she found out she has a tumor on her kidney and the only ovary she has left, I was praying for her to get answers and see clearly what it is the purpose for her illness. I woke up early this morning to let my dogs outside, one snuck out of the gate to my front yard I went to open the front door and sitting by my tree was a Hawk. One might not think that to be strange. But, I live in a pretty big city, it’s not normal, I made sure to get my oldest daughter out of bed to see it to make sure I wasn’t seeing things, then I reminded her of what my prayers were last night that things that would be happening wouldn’t be of this world! That only God, the Great Spirit can do and show us.it stayed long enough for us both to see it, it turned around, looked in her bedroom window and then flew off. Thank you for sharing your story. It touched me. I appreciated hearing it. You’re so right. We are not alone in the darkness we surround ourselves with. Keep walking in the light.
I have a wildlife preserve two blocks from my house which has a few miles of trails I’ve been walking daily for past several months. With most places like that there’s many hares, jack rabbits, lizards, a few snakes and various birds. A few weeks ago I saw for the first time ever there a red tailed hawk perched on a post with its newly caught meal. Another person was taking photos and it flew away after maybe 60seconds. Then the other morning I was there for my walk and a huge red tailed hawk landed on a dead tree near me. I just stopped and stared. It looked at me and tilted its head to the side, reminiscent of a friend who’s listening to you talk about a personal struggle. I slowly made my way to it hoping to get a few pictures and it just sat there, looking at me. It let me get within 5 ft of it. It made eye contact with me and I felt something I’ve never felt and can’t even put into words justly enough. I’ve been struggling with ptsd and anxiety, the loss of a childhood friend and both grandparents I was very close to. My mind has been stuck in a dark place and its been so hard to get out of it. Sounds crazy, but I swear this hawk knew I’m hurting. I could feel it and see it in his eyes. I’ve always had strange encounters with my life, everything from foxes and their babies letting me pet and feed them, to other wild birds (like the mourning dove, also ironic) land on my porch table inches from me, to even an accidental with a moose who could have easily trampled me but just stood right next to me, so close I could touch him. But this hawk, something was different. Then today I saw another type of hawk (not sure exactly what kind it is yet) but entire time I walked (about an hour) this one flew above me. When I sat down it’d land on a tree too and we just looked at each other. It followed me even after I left the preserve until I got back to my street. I don’t know what the meaning is, if these experiences have anything to do my past loved ones, the dark place I’m fighting to get out of, or just a bizarre coincidence. But I feel something powerful when I’m in the presence of these hawks. I’ve taken photos (or tried to) of them, and in many I’ve ended up catching up something else in the photos, these weird little ball of lights, its center is solid in its light then around it is a more transparent type thing around it. Whatever it is, the light and the hawks, its like a light in the darkness for me. Its made me believe I’m not as alone as I think I am, that there’s a way out of the darkness. I feel this also rings true for anyone else going through a hard time, no matter what it may be, you’re alone either. And you can and will get through whatever darkness you’re going through. I think there’s a purpose to why we’re all having these beautiful encounters, in a way, we’re all connected by them. Even more reason to believe we’re not alone. To anyone who may read this, I’m sorry this is long and I rambled, but thank you for reading. Everything happens for a reason. Xoxo
I just woke up from a very powerful dream. I had a dream I was at my old job and the building was being demolished and them big beefy guy and his young son where there and the guy pulled out this huge hunting rifle and there where a bunch of hawks gathered pecking at the grass. The man started to shoot at them hitting two or there. He then gave his gun to his young son and the son was starting to shoot at the ones trying to fly away. I saw a few hawks who didnt fly away they started to huddle together and I had started to try to leaded them into the construction area. I thought the guy couldnt possibly try shooting at them in there and as soon as I got into the area the guy followed me. He had his gun in hand and this small woman wearing a regular construction gear came up to him weeping sand said “you have kill brother hawk” we must offer his spirit up.” so she got this incense burner out and started to speak my native tongue as she wept praying mother earth will except brother hawks bones and that the meat fill that man up. She made the man stand there and pray for his bounty as he plucked it. I woke up crying.
When my husband and I separated a year ago, I had experiences with butterflies. As I started to research and open my mind and spirit to this new spiritual world, I began to find peace and quiet my mind. Last week, I was in my lawyer’s office at a crossroads on how to finalize my divorce after 21 years of marriage. I began to stare out the window thinking, and a huge beautiful red bellied hawk came and perched on a branch in front of the window I was looking out. It was like he was staring right at me and his presence was amazing. The lawyer said he had never seen the hawk in that tree before. After my discussion with the lawyer, I had a tremendous sense of peace come over me, and my path became crystal clear. This last year has been an incredible spiritual journey for me. Interesting in a years time, the butterfly led me to the hawk. Thank you all for sharing your stories. It is a tremendous help :)
@Rae-I am going through something very similar. I too found the butterfly in my life about a year ago. I was going through a separation, though her was still in the house until February. After 18 years of marriage and 24 years together. Took this test a year ago and my spirit animal was a butterfly. Now I am approaching the divorce being finalized, may be a few months, but took the test again to find out the hawk is now my spirit animal. There are hawks that fly around my neighborhood and I have a nature park right behind my house. As I found out last night that the hawk was my spirit animal, I heard a hawk’s call as my children slept next to me. Good thing I didn’t get that butterfly tattoo before my 50th in November. :-)
I just had a very spiritual moment. I was sitting on my couch reading when all of a sudden a Hawk flew into my carport and landed on the roof of my car. He proceeded to stay there and watch me through my open window while I spoke to him. Afterwards I decided to share my experience with family and friends on Facebook….. only to discover that my 19 year old cousin lost her battle with cancer this morning. I know that this was a message from the Heavens to let me know that she was safe and Flying free. I decided the look for the meaning behind seeing a hawk, and found this. This was truly a messenger of God and a messenger of Death.
A hawk was sittin a low branch and flew off as u slowly went by. It felt like a gift
