The dragonfly is often seen around water, ponds or on the edge of a river or lake. Dragonfly totem and the search for personal authenticity
The dragonfly is a fascinating animal characterized by the beauty of its colors, the lightness of its wings and its scintillating body. The meaning of this power animal is associated with the symbolism of light, but also illusion.
Those who have the dragonfly as a spirit animal may be encouraged to show their true colors more often and shine. Even if they may be more discreet than let’s say the peacock, they often exert a fascinating influence and arouse curiosity in others.
When the dragonfly shows up in your life, it’s perhaps time to look through illusion. A situation or someone’s intentions are not clear and may be deceiving.
Dragonflies and the connection with the spirits of nature
Dragonflies are powerful allies to connect with the spirit of nature. Their fairy-like quality makes them auspicious spirit animals to work with the power of light and fairy realms.
Animal of wonder, the dragonfly can bring forth the enchanting spirit of our own nature. When you see this spirit animal, allow yourself to open up to the magic of nature and the elements.
Dragonfly symbolism in the world and ancient traditions
Japan made the dragonfly its national emblem. It is a symbol of joy and rebirth. In some Native American traditions, it is also symbol of the departed souls. For the Mayan, the dragonfly is the emblematic animal of the goddess of creativity, Ix Chel. It is said that the dragonfly’s wings and magical songs revived her after she almost got killed.
Dreaming of Dragonflies
Similar to other spirit animals, the dragonfly is a symbol of transformation and change. They begin their life in the water, but soon transform into the agile flyers that we know them to be. If dragonfly appears in your dreams it may be telling you that a change is coming. If the dragonfly lands on you, it is believed to be a good change. If the dragonfly is dead, it is believed to be a bad change.
Dragonflies are fast, agile and have a short life cycle. If the dragonfly in your dream is moving fast from place to place, it may be a sign to live life fully in the present. Where have you been holding back? What are you waiting for? Do you dare to fly fast and free?

I have seen more dragon flies this year then I’ve ever seen in my life. A beautiful red one landed on my toe when I was floating on my raft in the pool, My first reaction was panic but it just relaxed and it stayed there until it was ready to fly away, the next day there was a greenish blue one and it was even more beautiful then the red one and every time I see one I am amazed. I’ve lost count how many Ive seen this year.I enjoy every time I see one.
Sitting in a canoe a dragonfly alighted on my shoulder and stayed for a long time. It then flew from my shoulder to my knees, enjoying the ride.
When we returned to the shore I stayed in the canoe until the dragonfly decided to fly on.
Ive seen a black dragon fly hover next to me for about 15

On July 28 2014 my father died after a short battle of cancer he found out last year in July 2013 that he had a rare cancer and that it was fast acting and it really was. well on August the 25th of this year there was a big rain storm that came through and after the rain our yard was covered in dragonflies. They were in nobody yard but ours. I walked out to see if they were in anyone else yard but couldn’t find any. The whole front yard was covered with them so I was wondering what the meaning to this situation was and after reading all that I have read I guess it was my dad letting us know that he was ok.
Sounds like a sign to me! The important thing here is what does *your* heart tell you? ;)
Tarita,
God Bless you and your dad. I had a similar experience, I had a life changing event too. Father of my 2 children hit me, my life was changed forever. I just wanted to reach out to you here as, obviously the spiritual world, whatever you and I make of it, is here with us. God bless, my spiritual friend.
I had a frog and a flower laugh at me and scare me in silly ways…which I knew were my loved ones that passed saying hello. We just have to look for the ways in which our loved ones are touching us. I truly believe the ones that are close to us don’t ever leave us, they are always here. We just take different forms.
wow, your Dad really loves you…Clan Dragonfly people are the best
peace out, Moose
I lost my brother on August 26, 2014. A week before he passed, I gave him a Dragonfly weathervane for his birthday, not knowing about the symbolism. The day after he passed there was a poem in our local paper titled “Dragonfly” and I felt it was an omen. A few days later, after we spread his ashes in his favorite lake where he fished I was sitting in my garden remembering my brother’s last visit. We always sat in my garden enjoying the birds. Suddenly a dragonfly flew right up to my face and hovered for several minutes, just inches from my eyes. Normally I would have been frightened but for some reason that day I just sat there, still. It was as if it was looking in my eyes. Then, a few days ago I realized that an antique book I have titled “Insects” displayed on a shelf in my living room has a picture of a beautiful dragonfly on the cover. I had never really paid much attention to it before even though I love the book. Now I know why the book means so much to me…

In 2012 my sweet dad passed away with cancer. My mum has been living with my family ever since his death and was diagnosed with terminal cancer before Christmas 2013. Yesterday was my 50 birthday, my husband stayed home from work to spend the day with me and we planned on taking a short day trip to the coast. When my two sons found out, they wanted to go as well. While we were waiting for them, we decided to run a few errands. As I left the house something flew at my arm, but I was walking quickly and it brushed by my arm. When we came back I was in the exact same spot, a beautiful dragonfly landed on my arm. As I walked up to the house, it stayed there. My husband got the camera and took three pictures. I tried to get it to move and it just climbed on my finger!! It wasn’t until I thought, “OMG, this is Daddy!” and started to cry that it flew away, but it landed close by! The cool thing I noticed as I held it, it turned its head to the side and looked directly at me! My heart is full…I received the best gifts of all being completely surrounded by my family!!
When my brother passed in 2007 from cancer I suddenly was inundated with dragonflys-saw them everywhere-as with you, they landed on me and didn’t fly away-also my sister-in-law took me to town in Arkansas while I was there for his services and there was a store named dragonfly! since then I moved to a farm and there are a zillion dragonflys on my property!!! they fly right into my sunporch-the bad thing is sometimes they don’t fly out and I have to get my son to catch them and free them <3
IN April this year, during my mother’s wake in my mom’s living room where she requested to have her wake, there was this dragonfly that would fly over and around my mom’s wake every day and night. Everybody that was there would notice this particular green dragonfly for three days and nights. And everyone would say” the dragonfly is here again. This incident gave us comfort. This memory gives me comfort up to these days.
sharing this response as my true to life experience hoping to comfort those with similar situations
2 years ago on July 27th 2012, I found out my dad had stage 4 cancer, I sat in his back yard crying & when I looked up there was 100’s of dragon flys flying around me & the backyard. They werent in our neighbors yards just ours. Last year & this year I have been surrounded by 100’s of dragon flys again, I now live at my dads house & this year they have been here everyday all summer. My dad is still with us, although in another state & we dont know how long he has left. Also I have been surrounded by hummingbirds for the last 2 years, they fly right up to my face & stay for a moment for me to notice them. I have even been hit in the head by 2 hummingbirds over the last year. I am very close with my dad & it has taken a huge toll on me with watching him be so sick & I havent been as strong for my 2 daughters who are 5 & 2.5. Shortly after I found out about my dad, my 2.5 year old who was only 12 months at the time passed out & had a seizure & ended up being epileptic & a few months later we were in a bad fall & I was injured badly as I protected my baby but, the fall triggered new worsening symtoms & we found out she had a rare brain & spinal disorder called Chiari Malformation & syringomylia & needed emergency brain surgery at just 17 months old. I have been struggling with what im suppose to do & who I am since all of this has happened yet, when im swormed by the dragon flys & hummingbirds I feel at peace for those moments & just want to get up and spread my arms & twirl & dance like my daughters as they fly around me & for those moments I forget everything bad & just smile, laugh & cry. Its like they let me just let it all go & take the weight of my shoulders to give me strength for the next week & when ever I feel hopeless I step outside & twirl with them again. Ive always been curious what all the humingbirds, there are about 7-10 of them & the 100’s of dragonflys mean or represent.
I am touched by your beautiful understanding of a difficult situation. I wish you love and light and many Angelic blessings, you are surrounded by this delicate energy of dragon fly and hummingbird. Hummingbird is one of my animal totems, Hummingbird conjures love as no other medicine does. Hummingbird feathers open the heart xxx
My son passed away 7/17/12 and I was in my back yard crying and wanting to die..then I seen a dragonfly fly over me its as if it was trying to stop me from thinking bad.then I felt my son was there with me…I miss him so much every time I feel sad the dragonfly comes to me…I love you son and miss you so bad….love mommy.

I lost my dear Papa 5 summers ago. Last summer, I felt the most care-free, and tranquil I had in many years. During this poignant summer Dragonflies landed on me, or near me almost daily! So much so, that my family and friends noticed too! I felt such happiness and peace each time I got to visit one or observe them. I’m not at all surprised that was also the summer that my whole thought process was clarified and I walked more confidently everywhere I went! I felt like my Papa was near me in those times too :) could it be a sign? I certainly believe it was!
Beautiful!!
