Coyote Spirit Animal
Coyote Symbolism
The coyote often symbolizes the trickster or joker. However, its symbolism is associated with a deep magic of life and creation. It can be considered as having the following meanings:
- Jokester
- Adaptability
- Reveal the truth behind illusion and chaos
- Playfulness
- Paradoxical nature, personality difficult to categorize
- Beware of the dark side of things and play on your resources
The wisdom delivered by the coyote spirit animal is rarely direct. The way of the coyote is to teach through ways that do not appear straightforward. It may also use subterfuge or trickery to reach its goal or deliver its message.
Don’t be fooled by the coyote’s way: In any circumstances you encounter, no matter how pleasant or clear they appear to be, there’s a hidden wisdom for you to reap. Be aware of the round about ways of the coyote totem and its teachings.

Coyote spirit and not taking things seriously
If the coyote spirit animal crosses your way, you may be encouraged to not take things too seriously. Perhaps you need to lighten up or change your perspective about an issue or matter that has been on your mind for a while.
Call on the spirit of the coyote to support you in refreshing your perspective and lighten the weight of circumstances. Even if the coyote is often presented in many stories as a trickster and a spirit animal bringing complication to whoever crosses his path, it is a good reminder to keep things simple and open up to possibilities.
Coyote totem and teachings with a sense of humor
It’s sometimes hard to grasp the wisdom of the coyote without experiencing some unsettling or disruptive feelings. Here, serious pieces of wisdom and playfulness often go hand in hand and appearances may be deceiving. The wisdom of the coyote may appear through a joke or what shows as trickery.
There’s often wisdom in making fun of serious matters and letting go of certainties. Call on the coyote to reinvigorate an appreciation of life’s wisdom through diversity and richness. This animal totem provides his teaching with a good sense of humor.
The Coyote, the magic in life, and the unexpected
The coyote totem is symbolic of the magic in life and creation. In some traditional stories, it is associated with the dark side of witchcraft and is considered as a bad omen. The flipside of these negative associations is the spirit of resourcefulness and ability to survive.
When the coyote spirit animal shows up in your life, it might lead you to experience the unexpected more fully. Surprises await you. Pay attention, you may also find piece of wisdom in the most unexpected places. By affinity with the power of adaptability of the coyote, you may be called to be flexible and adjust to a situation that you did not anticipate.
Dreaming About Coyotes
Dreams are our subconscious minds communicating to us using the language of symbols. In Native American tales the coyote is a creator, teacher, and a keeper of magic. The coyote often represents a magical power or trickster god. Coyote can appear when you are being initiated into your next level of spiritual growth. The coyote is also sometimes considered a symbol of weakness, deception, hypocrisy. Coyote can also be a reminder not to be too serious and to keep your sense of humor.

I’m still trying to find the answer of three times in my life (two camping) and one laying in bed of truck watching meteor shower, where a pack circled me or us and sat down with tongues out panting and one or two whimpering. Never did they get aggressive just sat watched for a few minutes and then they went on. Very strange still perplexes me today. now i bought a farm and a pack hangs or rotates around my land, and late at night playing in the far back fields
I’m playing in a feild i play in a lot late night to early morning sometimes never seen coyotes there before but i no there are but 2 appears at The same time but I’m not sure if they were really real cause when i felt scared they vanished into the dark all i could think was to leave they stated at me like they was telling me to leave. Cause they didn’t show no teeth they gave me the stare like I’m not going tell you again .but why 2
Coyotes often hunt in pairs, they are rarely solitary. They also are shy and will not confront humans so they’ll most likely run at the sight of one.
They aren’t shy in my neighborhood. They sometimes trot down the street at night (a pack of anywhere between 2 and 4) and usually aren’t spooked by me, unless one of them is a coyote that I haven’t seen before. They like to roll around in my neighbor’s fake lawn while they hunt for wildlife, stray cats, and the occasional roadkill (an easy meal, but I’d think it’d be pretty difficult to eat a squirrel roll-up). Sometimes they’ll walk down the sidewalk in front of my house, right in front of me.
I have even seen one wait to cross a major road (late at night, of course) until the crosswalk signal said that it was OK to cross, even though there was no other traffic at all besides myself. They are very intelligent and clever dogs.Well, most of them. I’ve seen a couple dumb ones before. But, we can’t all be winners, now can we? ;0]
A coyote appeared yesterday and yipped and howled for a good ten minutes. Broad daylight. Visible. Unflappable. Just sat there as if it were speaking directly to me. I know there are coyotes on my farm. I hear them often but to see them never happens. I answered the howl and moved my position. My Shepherd also barked and raised his hackles then settled. It was as if she were trying to tell me something. I believe my farm is a spiritual sanctuary especially where we had our encounter at the base of my ridge line that is the image of a pregnant Indian.
I know a man whom believes that his spirit animal is the coyote…yet he stalks the coyote,he traps the coyote…he then murders the coyote while it already has suffered in the trap he set and baited himself…all to kill it with a BB gun so he can take the pelt….is he insane? Perhaps narcissistic…help me understand
yes. he sounds like a madman…and not the good kind.
I Still Been Waiting For One To Come To Me I Wish There Was One At My House I Wanted A Coyote But I Had A Dream Of One So I Guess It Is My Spirit Animal.
Stop waiting and be ! Every moment is beautiful if we are here and thankful. Have faith what you need will come
I’ve been seeing the same coyote cross my path for the last 3 days in a row and every time I see him…. he stops and looks at me as I drive by… I feel like it’s trying to tell me something…strange but yet…comforting ❤️
lmao
Hello, thanks for writing this post!
I’m growing in my spirituality and have been going out and opening up to nature. Trying to learn animal communication too.
After my hike today (mini hike) I drove past this “park” that I’ve always wanted to check out but I always got a feeling to not go there. I checked it out, and it was nice. I saw this gray coyote fox like a wolf get up and slowly walk through the leaves, I saw it for brief moment then I freaked out and ran towards this abandoned blue house. I had no idea where I was going, but luckily there was a way out. I had to walk all the way around main street to get back to my car lol.A part of me wishes at that moment I wasn’t so nervous, but you can never trust a wild animal right?
I got coyote for the quiz but I think i have much more spirit animals inside me and i looked at all of them and i have like 80% inside me
my nickname is coyote plus they will not hurt me or any one that is family or friends
I took two pictures today of the wilderness. Both from different spots (Chumash territory- Ascending Coyote). My shadow is in the middle of the pictures, to my right is the shadow of a coyote who is facing me. There was nothing behind or beside me when I took the pictures and didn’t notice the shadows until I sent the pictures to my daughter. Magic?
My father has been on hospice for three months at home. This past Sunday my daughter called me to come outside with her at my father’s home. We went outside and there were 2 beautiful coyotes in the road, we looked at them and they stood and looked at us and then they walked away. I told my daughter that was a sign. 4 hours later my father passed.
Beautiful sigm from our dear coyote friends…. I love them so…..blessings to your dad…
