Coyote Spirit Animal

Coyote Spirit Animal

By Elena Harris, Editor

The coyote totem is strikingly paradoxical and is hard to categorize. It’s a teacher of hidden wisdom with a sense of humor, so the messages of the coyote spirit animal may paradoxically appear in the form of a joke or trickery. Don’t be tricked by the foolish appearances. The spirit of the coyote may remind you to not take things too seriously and bring more balance between wisdom and playfulness.

Coyote Symbolism

The coyote often symbolizes the trickster or joker. However, its symbolism is associated with a deep magic of life and creation. It can be considered as having the following meanings:

  • Jokester
  • Adaptability
  • Reveal the truth behind illusion and chaos
  • Playfulness
  • Paradoxical nature, personality difficult to categorize
  • Beware of the dark side of things and play on your resources

The wisdom delivered by the coyote spirit animal is rarely direct. The way of the coyote is to teach through ways that do not appear straightforward. It may also use subterfuge or trickery to reach its goal or deliver its message.

Don’t be fooled by the coyote’s way: In any circumstances you encounter, no matter how pleasant or clear they appear to be, there’s a hidden wisdom for you to reap. Be aware of the round about ways of the coyote totem and its teachings.

Coyote Spirit Animal

Coyote spirit and not taking things seriously

If the coyote spirit animal crosses your way, you may be encouraged to not take things too seriously. Perhaps you need to lighten up or change your perspective about an issue or matter that has been on your mind for a while.

Call on the spirit of the coyote to support you in refreshing your perspective and lighten the weight of circumstances. Even if the coyote is often presented in many stories as a trickster and a spirit animal bringing complication to whoever crosses his path, it is a good reminder to keep things simple and open up to possibilities.

Coyote totem and teachings with a sense of humor

It’s sometimes hard to grasp the wisdom of the coyote without experiencing some unsettling or disruptive feelings. Here, serious pieces of wisdom and playfulness often go hand in hand and appearances may be deceiving. The wisdom of the coyote may appear through a joke or what shows as trickery.

There’s often wisdom in making fun of serious matters and letting go of certainties. Call on the coyote to reinvigorate an appreciation of life’s wisdom through diversity and richness. This animal totem provides his teaching with a good sense of humor.

The Coyote, the magic in life, and the unexpected

The coyote totem is symbolic of the magic in life and creation. In some traditional stories, it is associated with the dark side of witchcraft and is considered as a bad omen. The flipside of these negative associations is the spirit of resourcefulness and ability to survive.

When the coyote spirit animal shows up in your life, it might lead you to experience the unexpected more fully. Surprises await you. Pay attention, you may also find piece of wisdom in the most unexpected places. By affinity with the power of adaptability of the coyote, you may be called to be flexible and adjust to a situation that you did not anticipate.

Dreaming About Coyotes

Dreams are our subconscious minds communicating to us using the language of symbols. In Native American tales the coyote is a creator, teacher, and a keeper of magic. The coyote often represents a magical power or trickster god. Coyote can appear when you are being initiated into your next level of spiritual growth. The coyote is also sometimes considered a symbol of weakness, deception, hypocrisy. Coyote can also be a reminder not to be too serious and to keep your sense of humor.

I have lived in the same home for 13 years… One of the things I yearn for is the outdoors and when I sleep at night mainly in the warm season I am often awakened by Coyote howls back and forth they call to one another. I was once told an Indian Ledgend (not sure tribe affiliation) that this animal carries the soul of native warriors. I love them I yearn to hear them it brings me comfort, always has! My dilemma is we have a new neighbor that is hell bent on shooting all of them in the area. Supposedly another neighbors huge dog was attacked. I do not believe this… we have many small game they have a plentiful diet here. Thier dog had small scratches by its ribs. They did not see any attack but said they have seen them in thier yard before…This hunt will not happen… I will not allow it! Can you give me any information on Coyotes this is my spirit animal and I want to tell the “hunt leader” why I feel strongly about protecting them. We moved into thier home is my biggest argument but they are also sacred in my heart. I just want some native american beliefs to support my argument and wage my stance. Thank you! I know there are way bigger issues to focus on right now with protecting our sacred waters!! This is just my own personal conflict I need to resolve so I can focus on the most important thing-Mni Wiconi
May the spirit be with you my friend.

I’ve seen a lone coyote for the last several weeks; during the day and night. My life has been in turmoil for the last 7 months. Wondered what it meant so did a search that led me here. Love to know what he’s trying to tell me-stop worrying and go with the flow or let it all go and start anew.

Joe man I promise you read the power of now the guide to spiritual enlightenment by eckhart tolle and u will be reminded of everything to end your suffering and stop the voices. Do not hesitate to go on to be insane like I have been for years now. This book is the last piece of the puzzle for me and I’m only on the 30th page. Seriously nothing I’ve come across is as powerful as this book. Consciousness. Observing the the thought and emotion. Seeing the emotion is right and a reflection of the mind. We need to dis identity with the mind and become observers so we can make habit of being again ever present. This higher self will not fail any of us but free us to truly be joyous and live in abundance and free of the prison of your mind. Observe both emotion and thought and also go into stillness and silence and jump in between the two till u have your answer or answers. Please don’t go waste your time losing your mind going mad like I did under mind control. Pick up this book and finish it quickly and I promise you Joe we will be awakened again. Later man. It’s been a long time for me. Four years. Don’t know how I’m alive to be honest.

Weirdly enough I have seen a lone coyote almost daily for the last few weeks. My life has been in turmoil for the last 7 months. Not sure if seeing this little messenger means let it go and go with the flow or let it all go and start anew

    • Katie June 13, 2017 at 6:37 pm - Reply

Hi. Maybe he’s been sent to deliver the message you are asking about? Should you let it go and go with the flow, or let it go and start anew. I personally think it could be both. I have been dealing with an issue that I have held on to so long it’s causing me worse stress. So, maybe the coyotes message is to both of us: let the past stay where it must, the spring comes once a year… When it too lets go so it can start anew. It’s a great message. It’s hard to do… But the message is clear. Move on, change what you can change, let go of what keeps you stagnating and start anew. Life is all about living. That is what I got out of the message the coyote gave me. I think our messages are the same. Let’s just ” do it”!

An injured and dying coyote took refuge in an empty stall of our barn. I was not afraid at all, and sat with him and spoke softly to him as we awaited division of wildlife (he had unfortunately been shot, poorly, and was severly debilitated and in shock it appeared). He made eye contact with me often, and neither of us was afraid. I cried for him when he died, I feel very connected to him and “spoken to”. Ironic thing is, my partner and I are opening an animal sanctuary on the property. It’s as if he knew it was a safe place to hide.

Would anyone like to clear up his you might feel ‘disruptive’ feelings when chosen by the coyote? I feel like I’ve been going insane with random ‘coincidences’ that all trail back to the coyote.

    • Travis December 3, 2016 at 11:07 pm - Reply

Perhaps these ‘disruptive’ feelings relate to ones striving towards personal truth.
Like the Coyote, living without a mask brings the greatest bliss, but it also makes you so vulnerable.

These ‘disruptive feelings when chosen by the Coyote’, I feel, might mean, as far as my story relates at the moment, just taking off my mask and letting this happen. Which, letting go and becoming more malleable with circumstances and being that Coyote ‘adaptable’ might feel like annihilation because who really feels comfortable letting go of control?

I surely hope, for you and I, the joke is a really funny one and we can all look back and laugh about how Coyote tricked us into happiness once again.

    • Abigail Small January 3, 2017 at 8:34 pm - Reply

It may also be something your missing out of these ‘coincidences’. Coyotes tend to push you to think outside the box. And there’s more in those coincidences than you think. If you email me the coincidences, I’d be more than happy to help but it would be coming from a coyote!

    • dood February 13, 2017 at 9:45 pm - Reply

I have to agree that I believe ‘disruptive’ means to the status quo people. Disruptive of the daily routine and ‘normalcy’
As we all know when coyote comes into your life things are not going to go straight, but rather sideways. However, at the end of the sideways journey you will have learned a thing or two if you paid attention to the voyage

A coyote walked infront of my dad and I last night as we were talking. I was in tears, and the coyote looked at me, and then walked off. I stopped crying, laughed a little, and realized that everything was going to be ok. A year ago a coyote ran infront of my car when I was in aspen, co. I do believe it is my spirit animal.

I was fishing at about 11:30 pm tonight at a surburban pond and a coyote basically walked right up to me in the shadows, smelling me, before running away, light-footed, and showing itself to me one last time for a split second under a parking lot street light, disappearing entirely by the time I could jog up the hill. Considering what’s going on in my life right now, I think I know exactly what the sighting means.
