The night owl was the animal associated with the Lord of Death in the Aztec tradition. There’s a similar meaning for the Celts who associated the owl’s spirit with an animal announcing death, especially if it flies into someone’s window while a sick person is inside the house. It was viewed as the spirit animal that would carry the souls of the departed to the underworld.

I was recently working in a local wild bird shelter. People bring there injured birds and they are nursed back to health and then released back into the wild.

One morning we got aourselves an young Eurasian eagle-owl. It was still in the box so we didn’t really got a good look on ti yet, but we were told it was found dying on the forest path. It was a very busy morning, so the owner of the shelter told me to look after the owl. Check how it is doing and offer him some meat.

Now we had had a lot of owls before. They are super cool birds but I hadn’t had felt anything special about them. I had also been taking care of young owls before so I wasn’t nervous at all and went to get some meat pieces and pincers ready.

When I had everything ready, I dimmed lights down a little to not scare the little one so badly. Then I carefully opened the box, trying to not stress the bird up too much. Then I stopped. The little one sat at the corner of the box and stared right at me. But those eyes! I have never ever seen such eyes! I had seen many owl eyes before but these ones were something else! They were unbelievably orange and beautiful. They sucked me right into them. I’ll never forget those eyes.

I don’t know how long we stared each other when I suddenly remembered that little one was probably starving and i picked up some thin pieces of meat with my pincers. I offered it to owl but he kept staring with those stunning eyes of his. I tried again and then he took it and ate it while staring at me. I offered him another and piece and he ate it. He ate a lot which is always a good sign. When he refused to eat more I stood up and looked at him some more. For once the little owl hadn’t taken his eyes of me. I looked at those eyes some more and then closed the box and went to prepare him a place to stay until he’ll be strong enough to fly and released into wild.

Later I asked the owner if he had took the look at the new owl yet. He said he had. I said the little one has very unusual and remarkable eyes. Owner looked at me and said they looked totally normal healthy owl eyes to him. And he is bird person to the heart.

I went later to take a look at owl when he had been moved to his own enclosure. Those eyes were still amazing but owl seemed a lot more relaxed now. That was the last day of me working there for I would move elsewhere next week because I was going to study for a new career. Those eyes still are on my mind. Maybe I found my spirit animal.

I had recently had some things going on in my head that landed me in a suicide watch place for 3 days. Just my mind going crazy for some reason. I have a decent life, no real reason at least in my present time to feel this way. Anyways while I was there, a woman did a smudging for us. The place I was in was native American based. Anyways while I was in there I begged for a real sign of something spiritual, because as I’ve gotten older I have become more cynical and disbelieving of higher powers. After my three days I got out and went home and a couple days after I found an owl feather next to my doorstep. It was in a spot I would have had to see it. It is the most perfect feather I have ever fpund. No splits or anything messed up about it at all. I am trying to think that maybe it could be a sign. But there are an even amount of good omens and bad omens about finding one, atleast from what I’ve read. I don’t feel bad about finding it, just wonder? I want to bead it and possibly give it to my mom, who is going through something personal right now, but I don’t want to give it to her if it’s not right to do so, know what I mean?

Give it to your Mother darling! It’s a sign of transformation, one she is in need of! Tell her departing soul’s fly with these animal’s, and are here to express their heartfelt love, she will get through, as will you…as it came to you!!!

Lately I’ve been particularly depressed. Now a middle-age man I never have been able to get a grip on my life. I let everyone down around me including myself, unemployed, financially unsecured, socially isolated, hope is an elusive companion.
Just recently, I was walking alone, at night, and I turned off the suburban street, onto the small park trail between the houses. My mind unsettled, I was thinking,’It’s alright for me to die’ and my surprise at noticing how comfortable this felt, when the thought was suddenly interrupted by a presence. My eyes straight-away zeroed onto an Owl, perched, looking at me.
I’ve always felt like I’ve had a vibrational energetic connection with animals. But it doesn’t mean I have any idea how to apply or subscribe meaning to their occasional significant appearance in my life. In this case, the way the presence of the owl caught my attention and drew me out of my inner thoughts and temporarily into the present moment was at the very least an interesting experience. It did lead me to this website looking for insight and writing these words and if I’m being honest, after reading about the meaning of the appearance of the Owl, it begs the question, in this case, symbolic or literal?

    • Älx August 22, 2017 at 3:00 pm - Reply

Well in short you had the thought that “it would be alright for you to die” and the an Owl appeared right in front of you. It took you out of these thoughts and caught your attention.
If I understood it right the Owl, as an spirit animal, indicates change and it provides guidance by wisdom and the ability to see what otherwise would not be noticed. (I think we can reject the fact that in superstitious times the Owl was seen as a messenger of death … because it’s superstitious)
Maybe ou can ask yourself: how did you felt about the Owl getting you out of those dark thoughts?
How did you fell about the Owl sitting there in front of you? (It sounds rather positive)
Maybe you can draw Energy from this event, unocover WHY you aren’t so happy with your life and then CHANGE it.
(And since the own means deeper insight, maybe even the root of the cause.)
If the Owl is an spirit animal we should draw some positive energy form it. Thats why it’s there. 🙂
      (I like Owls)

      I wish you the best

It seems clear to me that God was responding to your thought through that beautiful creature…calling your attention to the need for transformation in your life…inspiring you to make changes and uncover hidden potential and abilities within yourself…giving you hope for a beautiful future…

      • Merry Roman August 28, 2017 at 10:38 pm - Reply

        @Alx @ Accidental Healer.
Thankyou both for responding. Ultimately I do think seeing the owl at this moment in time was a positive sign. That’s the way it feels anyway. Nonetheless it’s a challenge to separate myself from mental anguish, and hope, such as it is, remains fragile and extremely transient.
I hope there are ways I can slowly build up strength. I don’t know about a ‘beautiful future’, that feels impossible and unreachable, but for a change at least it would be nice to eventually just feel ‘okay’ more often.

About 4years ago when my daughter was about 14 months starting to talk.she pointed at the top corner of the bedroom a clearly said owl and with her finger inciting that their was and owl there. She knew what an owl looks like, so I told her okay. I just been thinking about it and is been bothering me, why would she see an imaginary Own in her bedroom. It scared me but I told her okay.what can this mean? After about a year or so she became with a condition called Selective Mutism she is fearful of speeking, she is now 5 and won’t speak to no one not even me. If all this owl experience had anything to do with her silence? If anyone can get me just a little I would appreciate very much.

According to the information above for the owl spirit animal, the owl can be a symbol of change in someone’s life. Maybe this had to do with your daughter?

Criseida, your daughter may be a shamanic healer. Years ago I dreamed of a beautiful white owl in the grass, beside it something shuffled… It was a skeleton man. Okay, something regarding death I reasoned. In the last year I dreamed that I complained of this world’s atrocities to my Mothers. “They’ve got machetes!…Machetes!” I exclaimed in horror. Inside a building on a wall were many images of snow owl & barn owl. Last week I dreamed I died, mouth clinched open spirit departing on a new journey. Then a wasp sting sent me to the hospital. They kept asking if I was having trouble breathing, I said “no.” This shocked them. The ambulance woman wore a belt with an 11 on it. I looked to my right to see a magazine with white barn owl on cover. Inside I found description of owl “seeing through the dark,” etc. Black panther pic also, and a many eyed tarantula. It was a crystal I needed to acquire with haste. When I got home the discharge papers showed the phone number 111-1111. Ok u have my attention owl lol. Owl and my angels reveal crystals to use for “higher journeys” of guidance and also protection. For your daughter try danburite, selenite and sodalite for speaking the high truths she is carrying. It can be hard to verbalize owl medicine. My name is Sekayi… Still listening, still learning. Love, bliss and truth…

I know nothing about you but reading your text I feel the need to tell you this very important fact. Take your encounter with the owl seriously. There’s a reason for it that must not be ignored. I’m here to tell you that their is no comfort in feeling it’s okay to die unless it’s your time. What you’re feeling is comfort in the death to this Ugly depression n it’s time to heal from it. Begin with you tubes access to meditation n or hypnosis, it’s done wonders for me. Please, do not ignore what I’m suggesting, it works. There is an awesome world out there, one we’ve not seen or learned yet. My introduction into the Spiritual life saved me from self loathing, depression, feeling out of place everywhere, etc… I got on my knees and introduced myself to God asking he’d show me the answers to why I’m where I am n all I did to get me here. He delivered n keeps delivering through signs. Stop, look n listen to all. ✌️

I remember (this is all from a dream and I may not be remembering correctly) I was on a path, and infront of me was a lion. But it wasn’t really giving off any aggressive, “your on my land” vibes. It gently swayed its tail, and to the side of it on a small tree was a owl that was rather peaceful. It almost felt like it was saying “go on”. While the Lion was infront of me.

I recently had a dream where I woke up and could only remember impressions of an owl, a bear and a cat. That’s it. I couldn’t remember anything else. I just took your spirit animal quiz and it gave me owl which I wasn’t expecting. But it seems every job I go to, soon after I arrive it is going through some sort of restructure or transition. I thought I might just be bad luck but it seems I have a purpose. It’s definitely interesting

Years ago night my dad died an owl appeared on fence post when we came home. It was there every night for few weeks. A year later we moved and that night an owl appeared on the fence an stayed for a few weeks. A few years later my 19 yr old poodle passed away and whn we got home there was an owl on the fence and stayed for few weeks. We moved again few years later and the first night an owl appeared on the fence. 4 years ago my 8 yr old mastiff passed away and that night an owl showed up on the fence and stayed for few weeks. Just 2 weeks ago I had to put my 11 yr old mastiff down. I went out on the porch that night hoping to see him and there was the owl on the fence post and he’s been there every night. Last night I came out and didn’t see him. I asked my husband if he had and at that moment I heard him screech and fly down and land on the post as if to say , I’m still here to watch over and comfort you. Also yesterday I layed out by the pools for 3 hours and the whole time I had a black butterfly sitting on my foot. Even if I got up to get in pool when I layed back down he flew back over and rest on my foot. I feel it’s my Max saying I’m still with you. I feel the owl is my daddy always watching over me, comforting me. I had not seen one at all in four years since my other dog passed til max died two weeks ago. I truly believe in the power and the connection :)I’m happy to read your stories and know others have similar experiences. Comforting. We have no children and my dogs were my babies, my heart and I know I will never walk alone in life :)I cry each day but I know they are still alive but sleeping in my heart 🙂

Yes, it is possible to have more than one spirit animal. In many cultures, people are often associated with up to five different spirit animals. It wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to say you may have two.

I can attest to the power of the owl as it has been an animal that has followed me all my life. Just lat night I dreamt of pulling back thorn canes from a tree revealing a hole and in the hole was a white owl. My dream shifted to a table at a restaurant and sitting at it were some people I work with who talk about me including some people I trusted. Their true natures were revealed. Also a few years ago my dad was very sick with cancer. I went to visit him on a Tuesday night out of the blue. He said he had heard that his uncle was very sick in the hospital. After our visit I left the house and headed down the walkway. I looked up into a tall fir tree and there was a barred owl. When it saw that I noticed it, it flew over to a low hanging maple branch that was directly above me. It stared down at me with its big black eyes. I went in the house to tell my dad. In my family, owl was always a recurring theme and we loved them. My dad had even nursed back to health one he had found hit along a road. Anyway my dad came out and we watched it. I went home and there was a message that my dad’s uncle had passed away an hour before. I called my dad to tell him. Even though he didn’t say it I sensed that he knew the owl was a messenger. I feel my great uncle’s spirit was coming to tell him he would also be going home soon. Within a few months he did. Another time I was missing my mother badly. She had died when I was a teenager. I was in my late twenties at this time. I walked out into the field at night, at the edge of a tree line. I had been thinking intently of her all day. I said a prayer for her. Suddenly two shadows in the moonlight swooped over me. It was two white-faced barn owls and they landed in a tree. The one took off again immediately while the other watched me intently. After a minute I said “hello, mom”. The owl looked at me a moment then flew off. I always associated owls with my mother as well as my father’s family.

Thanks for posting this. I can definitely relate to part of your story. Both of my parents passed when I was 13, seven months apart, but it was actually my grandmother who was always like an owl. One time my grandfather gave me a Konstglas Glass Owl and wrote a letter with it that said how my grandmother used to do late night feedings for their four kids. I know one thing for sure though, it takes a lot of strength to go through what you have went through, and I hope that you always will have joy, good health, and peace.

What does this mean?

Abiola, nearly the SAME thing happened to me tonight!!! I walked out of my house and was struck by how beautiful the moon is so I stopped to stare at it and an owl flew pretty low over my head and onto the roof of my building. I was staring up at it and it was looking down at me, then it flew away. What does it mean?

When I was a child I had a dream that I was sitting in the back seat of my grandparents car with my mother. We were driving past a large lake. I turned to look out the back window and saw what I thought was angel coming down out of the sky toward the car. As it got closer to the front window of the passenger side of the car I saw that it was a beautiful white owl. But this owl had two hollow holes for eyes. It reached in through the window to where I was sitting which was behind the drivers side of the car and with its wing poked my eyes out. I woke up . I have never forgotten this dream.

Near my home we had a park with animals. It had an owl. I would visit all the time just to see this owl. I have always loved owls. You can imagine how surprised I was after taking this quiz to find out my totem was an owl!
