The Crow, a Spirit Animal Symbolic of Magic

Crows are commonly associated with magic and the power to manipulate physical appearances. Ted Andrews in his classic on animal totems “Animal Speak” mentions that we can find crows are common animals that we can find all around the globe. As such, they are a reminder that magic is everywhere. When you encounter a crow, just tune into its behavior and it will give you a clue on how to use the magic powers it carries.

Only last night he felt deadly sick, and, after a great deal of pain, two black crows flew out of his mouth and took wing from the room.

Crow Symbolism and Life Mysteries

Crows have a usually black with tints of blue depending on the light shining on them. Their color is symbolic of the onset of creation, of the void or what has not taken form yet. Fascinating spirit animals, they carry the energy of life mysteries and the power for deep inner transformation.

As a spirit guide, the crow will guide you in getting in touch with life mysteries and develop your ability to perceive subtle shifts in energy within yourself and in your environment. It has the ability to go beyond the illusions, especially duality of right and wrong, inner and outer.

Crow Totem and Power of Insight

Crows are known to build their nests in very tall trees. Doing so, they can get a better vision or perspective on the rest of their surroundings. By affinity with this trait, those who have the crow as a spirit animal or totem will enjoy a position from where they can see things from a higher perspective.

The crow is also watchful of intruders and predators. The sound it makes is characteristic of a loud, strident bird noise that can warn the other members of it clan over great distance. When you see your crow spirit animal, be on the watch.

The Crow Spirit Animal, a Guide about Fearlessness and Determination

Have you ever watched a group of crows ganging up together and chasing out birds much bigger than they are? This behavior makes the crow a useful animal totem to call when you need support in dealing with adversity. If the crow chose you as your power animal, you are encouraged to develop your personal will power and speak your truth more loudly.

Crows always seem to be able to get away with what they are after, be it a piece of food left on the road or sneaking into other birds’ nests to steal or eat their eggs. Echoing this trait, those with the crow as totem or spirit guide might watch for the tendency to trick or be a bit manipulative.

The Crow In Your Dreams

While the crow appearing in a dream is sometimes considered a bad omen, a foreshadowing of sadness, this is only one of many meanings. A deeper interpretation of this meaning is that the crow is said to fly between the worlds of life and death and an appearance in your dreams may signify a message about your thoughts on life, death and transformation.

Crows are also very intelligent and dreaming about a crow or crows may be a sign of your wisdom or intuition. Your subconscious may be telling you to trust your intuition.

The crow is also a symbol of transformation. What part of your life is or may be going through a transition? Maybe you are changing relationships or careers? Maybe you are buying a new house? Whatever it is, the crow is signaling that you are ready to make the change!

I’ve always felt a close connection to the crow as a spirit animal. They are frequently in my presence. I do not fear them, I do not associate them with any sort of negativity. That being said, I do feel connected to other animals and birds. Is it possible to have more than one totem or spirit animal? I feel the same way about hawks and large cats, especially the jaguar. I once had a vision of a black jaguar with green eyes, he was seated to my left.

We never saw our 1st anniversary some 7 months later my husband was wrongfully convicted and went to prision. Where he still is. I always think of that crow. I remember telling him him that I didn’t think it was good luck.

I was driving to a gas station just today. And while on my way there, I was deep in my thoughts about an event that happened at my friend’s birthday party. All my old friends was there, and there was this one guy I always had issues with because of his immaturity and knack to go overboard picking on people. He’s been doing it for years and he’s older than his 40s. Im in my early 40s.

Anyway, I haven’t seen the guys in months so, I was happy to my buddies again as we all went to school together since kids. And that one dude came right out talk smack and doing the same stuff he’s been doing for years. At times, it leads to fights and big arguments and he seem to enjoy that. Which cause me to question the friendship with him.

So, we went at it again and it just dawned on me that Im not that kinda person and getting too old to be acting like highschool kids with this dude. I tried to laugh it off and not retalite when he kept talking smack. But he kept going on and on with it that others around us started picking on him as he brought it on himself.

And I learn he does that stuff with just about all our friends but Im his favor target. There be thoughts in my mind that maybe I need to beat this fella ass for once and all and he’d stop disrespecting me in company of our fridnds but we’re all so closed snd brotherly that he just confuses me as a friend. I’ve never hsd this issue with any of my other frinds. Just him.

So, the next day…which is today, it was on my mind how much shit he was talking at me for reasons I don’t know why. It could be jealousy or whatever. And thr thing is, when I hang with my other buddies, he’s always there among us. And one of the oldest among us.

So, I was thinking again, that our wires will get crossed and we may end up having a big fight soon. And I was comtemplating and counseling myself in the event of a fight in how I will get him to stop disrespecting me in front our friends.

I know how I can hurt him. I know what I can do and Im a brother that knows how to fight. Im no the best but I can hold my own pretty well with some MMA techniques to my credit too. And I told myself, if this fight goes down, and I hurt him badly, Im gonna stand there snd explain to him why I had to do it. Amd Im.gonna teach him in front of our friends why his action and conduct is b.s. when we are all grown-men and he acts like that.

And just as I had it figured out in my mind what I will do, I was then pulling in to gas station. Parked. Got out my truck snd went inside to get a drink. Came back out and got back in my truck and put it in reverse.

Righ then before I was backing up, a blackbird landed in the side of my hood; right in the corner area near my driver-side window and I could see it so closed-up, and it saw me, too. I slowly reverse and my truck was backing up amd the blackbird started to walk across my hood. When I angled to the right in a swerve motion, it the flew off my truck.

I thought about that as I never experienced a blackbird get that close to ke while knowing I was in my truck and that close to the bird….with my window down. It showed no fear at all of my presence.

And just before I pulled out the gas station parking lot, I stopped.snd google search, “Blackbird land in my hood of my truck.” And the first site was a site talking about Bird Omens etc.

And I think it was meant for me to read that site first before I look at other sites. And when I click open the site and scrolled down to blackbird commentary, it stated that Blackbirds like I saw meant:

    Passage and Protection.

    A message from the past.

Then I drove out and put it altogether, I was thinking about the issues with my friends and how he provoking me to hurt him. And then this crow landing on my hood. I put both situation together and this is what I think it is telling m:

God read my thoughts as I driving to the gas statation snd the blackbird was the amswer to me: Fear Not For I Am With Thee.

    Passage and Protection.

I was sitting upstairs at 5:00 am due to awaking early, I am sitting on the couch with the window to my ear and I hear in a “crows voice” a woman saying something and suddenly all the branches outside start breaking. I sat straight up with hair standing on end.. .was like that was a witch… totally freaking out softly uttered outside the window this house “lives in the light” you are not welcome here thinking it was a bad omen. Something urges me to investigate the voice tonight and I stumble across this. I am a creative woman and very connected to things so my opinion started as negative, but I see the positive connection. Connections through any spirit are a gift of receiving no matter their messages or meanings.

My mother had passed away and we went to the cemetery to find a plot for her and we were undecided on which one to choose when we spotted a crow squawking away at us on the ground of one of the plots we were considering. Needless to say I perceived it as a sign from my mother that was the plot she wanted and so we obtained it for her. The next day I returned to finalize the purchase and stood upon the plot the crow chose when I noticed a beautiful shiny black feather on the ground where I stood and accepted as a gift from my mother. To this day I feel a connection with crows and believe them to be my spirit guides. I also adore owls and eagles and consider them to be spirit animals.

My partner and i are trying to purchase a very very old house that has been part renovated and is now abandoned. Three days ago i took my daughter to see the house. While we were in the hallway we suddenly heard a crow – it sounded like it was in the house. I walked down the hallway and looked through the loungeroom window. There were two crows sitting on the rail squawking at us, then they flew away. I havent been able to stop thinking about them. Wondering if maybe this house is not for us!

Hi. For the past 3 weeks I’ve had crows squeaking walking towards my driveway, then my pet bird died, 2 weeks later my pet dog died just last Friday, and now I’m having anxiety attacks . There were 2 on my balcony before squaking at the window, I’m in fear something will happen to my family. 😭 Shadows this mean.
    Thank you

Crows and owls are often times attracted to the energies of death and change. I know that must have been very hard for you to lose your animals. Please focus more on processing your loss and taking care of yourself so that you can ease out of your transition. Transition, death and change can be liberating though it can often be painful in the process. Much love to you and may you feel better.

I’ve only just started to search my spirituality and on my first day back at meditating in months I was welcomed to 5 crows flying over my head and then having one fly above me while I pictured myself walking down a path. Could anyone help me understand if this is a positive or negative experience?

    • Payman September 25, 2016 at 4:24 pm - Reply

No experiences are positive or negative inherently, it really just depends on how you see it. In a neutral sense, crows they say are often attracted to the energies of the unseen, non-physical world, perception, intuition, clairvoyance etc. If your goal is to develop spiritually, I would say they are a very good sign.

On a side note, I always appreciate when I hear that someone is working on themselves spiritually. I think it takes courage and helps us all. May you receive love and encouragement on your way.

Is it a good or bad thing to have crows at a fall wedding…doing the typical fall decor..and crows seem to fit.

I am a deep believe of a connected universe…past a and present life… That we are all connected in some way to each other.
I have had spirit animals in my life always…one way or another. As a child it was horses and dogs.As an adolescent hawks. As an adult certain ones come in and out of my life when the pull or need is greatest.
My Astrological sign is Scorpio which is also the Dragon sign…in these middle years I have become the Phoenix as life has changed so dramatically for me.but two constaints…are dogs .there absolute devotion and unconditional love…and birds..doves,ravens,crows. The last are very important right now. Doves the symbol of devotion and love. Crows are my mystics..the link to life’s magic. But also as wise eyes .Seek life’s mysteries, gain knowledge with open eyes to those around you. Embrace your world and everything in it …

You inspire me.. I too am a Scorpio, and the last 7 years have been birds.. Most recent crows, at first I was afraid because you know what the common world thinks of Crows.. I think they bring peace and transformation. I think there is a lot to be learned from them. I look forward to seeing them everyday now.

Had several black crows flying over me, catch my attention. One had a piece of food in it’s mouth while the others followed it. I verbally acknowledged them to the people I was with. Immediately following, I mentioned somethings about someone who passed (almost a year earlier). We happen to be in the exact parking lot where we had last saw them alive (this person did not seem fond of me when alive). Suddenly I stepped on a small rock and ended up breaking my ankle and my leg (severely). Doctors said they typically see those types of breaks in high impact crashes/sports. They could not explain it. Ended up in the ER and had to have immediate surgery. Note: I had just been to an “learning your energy gifts” seminar days before the incident, where I was told that I was an angel and it was suggested I had a direct connection to Meteteon? I do not know my spirit animal and this is all new to me, but my intuition is screaming out that there is sown thing going on. What if anything could this mean? Positive/negative?

It’s a single crow cawing alot sitting at tree in front of my house and it follows me every where can any1 let me know why this starts cawing seeing me

    • crowspiritsings August 23, 2016 at 9:00 pm - Reply

It is acknowledging your presence and letting you know it is aware of it. It also alerts all other creatures to your presence; but it also wants you to be aware of it and pay attention to its attention of you. That causes me to suspect it has chosen to be your totem animal and act as a guide to/for you.

I dreamt of a crow tearing the windshield wiper off my car.I could see his face in zoom form. There are always swarms of them either 4 houses up or two. The old man across the road had passed just over a month ago, but the dream was just last night

    Ur thoughts?

they say crows remember peoples appearance, faces.Unlike other animals. Also they they are the smartest birds.People find them annoying, I know they can be mean. When i looked more into them, i found them amazing. When my cat is outside she dont like the crows. I hear them squawking, they are alerting the cat , to back off. And alerting the other birds.
