Cat Spirit Animal
Cat Symbolism
The cat carries many meanings revolving around the balance between seemingly opposites, such as inner and outer, action and rest, light and dark. It’s strongly symbolic of the connection with what usually hides in darkness or the unknown. The cat generally represents:
- Patience, waiting for the right moment to act
- Independence, yet enjoying social connections
- Spirit of adventure, courage
- Deep, relaxed connection with self
- Healing from the inside out
- Curiosity, exploration of the unknown or the unconscious
Let’s remember that the cat as we know it today mostly as a domestic animal was not a common animal for the American Indians. It was introduced by the European settlers and therefore is not part of the original totemic traditions. Nevertheless, cat symbolism has pervaded many ancient and modern cultures around the world. One of the most well-known is the worship of the cat in ancient Egypt. Nowadays, the cat is often part of our ordinary life and an inspiring animal totem for many of us.
“Cats, as you know, are quite impervious to threats.”

Cats and exploration of the unknown
Cats tend to be active at night and are able to see in the dark thanks to their highly adaptable eyes. Because they can be seen roaming around at night, they are associated in several cultures with the realm of the darkness. By extension, the cat has been considered as a symbol or representative of witchcraft and dark magic arts, especially if its color is black!
Another way to see the meaning of the cat as a spirit animal or totem is to pay attention to its ability to see in the dark and be at ease when most other animals and humans are not. If the cat shows up in your life as a spirit guide or you have this animal as totem, you may be inclined to start exploring areas in your life or aspects or yourself that you do not know well yet.

Cat totem wisdom: Acting when the time is right
The cat spirit animal is a good helper for those who need to find the courage to tackle lingering problems or concerns. The cat is known for being a great hunter using not just force, but a refined sense of timing in the moment of the attack. It seems to follow its prey and be able to patiently wait and position itself until it catches it.
By affinity with this feline, those who have the cat as a spirit animal may be able to tackle issues with patience, confidence, and a good sense of timing in their actions. The wisdom of the cat totem lies in the ability to remain quiet, observe, and then act when the time is right, so you’re better positioned to reach your goal and preserve your energy even in moments of tension and action.
Attributes of the cat spirit animal: Agility and flexibility
When we observe cats, we see that they are characterized by the flexibility and agility. No matter the circumstances, it will always manage to fall back on its feet. By affinity with the cat totem, you may be encouraged to develop your flexibility at many different levels, whether it is in your physical body, mind, emotions, or spirit.
The cat totem is a source of inspiration to renew your perspective and have the courage to act or integrate it into your life. If the cat spirit animal shows up in your life, it may be time to explore new ways to look at things.
The cat totem: A call for independence
The cat is emblematic of a lifestyle that combines times of fierce independence and moments that are more social and cuddly. Being inspired by the cat’s spirit, you may foster the balance between your personal need for freedom and time alone with the company of others and social activities.
You may be called to bring more balance between your social life, whether it’s in your family, work or school, and time alone. The cat spirit animal could also encourage you to find a way of exploring your inner truths, as well as mystical truths, without sacrificing the connections you have with the rest of your environment.
Dreaming About Cats
Dreams are our subconscious minds communicating to us using the language of symbols. While some traditions think that a dream of a cat is a bad omen, this meaning is loosing favor in our more modern times. Dreams of cats have more often come to symbolize your feminine essence and sensuality. Dreams about cats may also be a message to tap into your inner mischievous and mysterious nature. A black cat in your dreams may be telling you to pay attention to your intuition. As far back as the ancient Egyptians and possibly farther, cats have been believed to be able to travel between dimensions. Is there a message from another dimension here for you?

When I was homeless, there was a time when I felt like giving up. “I’d rather just lay there and die…” was my mentality. I felt that I’d been chased out by the community and had been walking for hours with no place to sleep; finally I found a place in the dirt to lie down. This place felt somewhat safe and secluded, as I am an INFJ and need my long moments of solitude to recharge, collect myself, and heal before going back into the world again to be social. Tossing and turning, looking up at the stars, I started to hear dogs barking and lie wide awake planning what to do if the dogs happened to come after me. Then I heard wild cats screeching as if they were fighting and one black cat started to prowl, watching me. I thought about jumping the fence, but from far away it looked like it could’ve been a black cougar, which could climb and run after me in a large field of dirt that surrounded me. I began to walk away calmly using the sleeping bag I had to add more volume to my body, shaking the water bottle making noises to fend it off. Thankfully I discovered there were no wild large animals in that area, but the cats there were more predatory (there were many). The next day, another homeless man invited me to rest in his camp underneath a huge tree where hurdles of friendly kittens approached us and we were petting and feeding them for days. After reading this article, it makes sense that after overcoming my (illegitimate) fears, more positive encounters with a larger number of spirit cats could make way. Since then, I have noticed the cats we have at home approach me very peacefully and playfully, but play these games where they walk toward me, then away, toward then away when my energy toward them is frantic and aggressive. It also mentions here that cats symbolize patience, which is a helpful reminder to slow it down and try to approach things peacefully — a reminder to look at things in a different way. For the past 2 years or so my life has been no short of chaos and this is an affirmation for me to research and get more in touch with nature and the spiritual, mystical aspect of life. I have felt scared to do so, although it did help me find peace and helped me stay connected to nature and brought better omens in my dreams in the past. I also feel this same connection to a cougar that had been sitting at the foot of my old apartment stairs, looking scared and misplaced, which I passed by less than two feet afraid it would come after me, but it didn’t. I also seem to encounter crows, a certain gray species of birds, hummingbirds, and wild jack rabbits. I will be doing more research on this site now to find the inspiration from these encounters. There is a certain healing quality that comes from these animals, which then seem to appear more often and in larger quantities each time. Thank you for posting these articles, they are such a lifesaver in moments of grief and feeling lost. I am a firm believer in the healing power of darkness/mystical events.

I dreamt a cat said yo me when I was young, “Hail me, I am your master.” Recently, any cat I have is only but cuddly with me. I also had a dream recently, where these beautiful girls were following me, and said I had a strong spirit animal. I felt like that was my pack, sort of.
My favorite cat died last summer and snince then, I have had dreams and a number of sightings including him or any other cat. I also have a deep connection with all cats.
And at the same time, he roams my house, showing up whenever. If you have a cat spirit in your home, this is always a sign.

I was on here because I’ve been seeing a cat spirit in my home too! I have another cat, Riku, but he is white/silvery gray and the spirit is brown caramel striped. I see it running around the house or peeking out at me around the corner. I was doing some work with Freyja a while ago to heal my cat and cats are associated with the goddess. I dunno. Any thoughts? I had another cat before Riku that passed a year ago and I felt her spirit around for a while but her spirit did eventually move on.
Maybe the cat spirit is calling you to reflect on something? Particularly in your moments of solitude. Is there an area of your life that lacks fun (playfulness)? Just a thought. Maybe it isn’t approaching you for what it wants, but to urge you to find a certain something that you might want and/or need in your life.
The other night I dreamt that my cat (which is grey and white) hunted and caught another cat in my house ( this cat was white but it’s fur was yellowed and dirty). My cat then ate the other cat from tail to head. When he was done I asked him why he ate that that cat and he said I had to for you. I’m not sure what my cat is trying to tell me. I know he protects and is grateful that I had saved his life when he was discarded by his previous humans. He is 15 now but in my dream he was young.
